Nice, that's what I was hoping it would do, but I've dealt with NICs not coming back up after this process. Always made it easier to just be there and watch it.

I've heard of that issue - it was a calculated risk I was willing to take to get it working.. ya know?

A ghost ship is when a ship (at sea) has lost its crew but doesn't sink and keeps on drifting. Software shops will often make software and keep selling it for years or decades after the "crew" who made it have left the company and the company can no longer maintain or update it (which often remains can't fully support). This is why client server software often exists... it was actually made by someone in the 1990s who has left and the company keeps selling it, but they can't modernize it because they don't have the skills remaining in house to work on the software.

So it was not a windows issue - It was the software running two or more instances of our mobile software at one time after a refresh.
What was happening was the software would restart, then try to open 2 or more at the same time causing the system to error and restart to try to clear it it's self.
Made changes to the settings in the system config files and have tested with 3 different refreshes today - It has not rebooted once.
Thanks for all the help with figuring this one out. I think i've gained a wealth of knowledge from this thread.

to expand on this - the back office becomes one of the "terminals" as an interface. When the refresh was happening the "back office terminal" was the culprit.

I've used it a couple of times, but since I started using the DC series of drives it's pointless. Only for their consumer class drives. It's great for firmware and secure erase if you have a compatible drive.

SO correct me here - But If I use a database server instance to compile data into folders and then use a mapped drive to send data to and from on mapped drives then wouldn't I be a fileserver using a database instance - not making it a database server?

Then you are in even worse shape because this is so ridiculous a court would see it as "intent to defraud" by making a slow, terrible system that makes no sense except to attempt to hide that you are violating a license.

This would be still having a database server (can you get data from the database? Then you have a server), but coopting the file server protocols to do it turning them into an API and thereby requiring that they be licensed as a server to keep using.

No matter how you skin the cat here, it's still a cat. There is a database server, it is managing data, and it is getting that data to other machines. That another service is put into that process to hide that is bad programming practice, but doesn't change licensing. Licensing is by use and intent, not visible protocol.

again - I might not have all of the information here to be able to tell you one way or another as this conversation goes on, I was simply asking -

Buy a Windows Server license and enough CALs, slap the sticker on the Win7 box, then go home and sleep peacefully.

@WrCombs If you're using serial / RS232, I'm guessing that your driver might be outputting in ASCII and might need to be set to ANSI or from 8 bit to 7 bit. Check these against other sites and see what you come up with. The repeated characters are representations of solid lines or simple graphics via the various protocols.

At least I've run into this before with a telnet app that we use here.

I've seen the time slip, usually caused from a aging bios battery. But where time is jumping all over the place. That's a new one.

after I re synced, It slipped an hour ahead.

Check (as in look at) the timezone and the automatic daylight saving check box

      Says eastern time .

wont let me change to Central Standard either

What do you mean it won't let you? Is it grayed out? Is there a link to click in the window to enable changes to be made?

When I change it to CST it says " Your current time zone is not recognized, Please select a valid time zone. "

      Try PowerShell:

      Set-TimeZone -Name "Central Standard Time"

Or whatever zone you're in and is current.

      Powershell blows up

Don't know what that means. Screenshot?

      Capture.PNG

even with copy paste it does that
      and elevated

      What's the result of this:

      $PSVersionTable

      Capture1.PNG

Oh. That's why. Are you able to install PS v 5.1?

I don't know the CMD.exe way to do it.

Im not sure, Give me a few

I'm sure a reboot would be required somewhere... but if you can, I found this:

      https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/3b13b6a0-ecb2-429d-ad8d-533b7322c7ee/installation-of-powershell-50-on-windows-2012-r2

      I did not do this,
I did however set it up to not be accessible from anyone but our Account which is completely locked and no one has the password, to see if the issue goes away.

@scottalanmiller said in Yet another Communication issue....:

When troubleshooting on the network, always start at the bottom and work up.

Start with a ping to the IP (not the hostname.)
      Then ping the hostname.
      Then nslookup the hostname.

These basic steps tell you what is working and what isn't. Don't hop around, use progressive testing and you'll get to answers really quickly.

      That's good advice,
We usually start with Aloha based issues such as the control service running on Server, any files telling it to stop, that sort of thing.
      Then we move to Windows/networking.

If you know other things are working, you can move up the "stack" to where you can guarantee success. Like if you are transferring files, you know ping works.

@WrCombs - did you reset the AP before using the AP? If no, that's why you couldn't find it.

Also, I'm not sure if the app can find an AP via non associated wifi or not - I'm guessing it must be able to, as home users wouldn't typically have a way for their cell phone to be attached to the physical network since you're just now trying to install wifi in the home.

fantastic, Hopefully I set it up correctly then

Well, you can show a screenshot, or use the cli too but we need to see to be 100% sure, and then you need to test. Test is always a good practice.

We were not sure they were dBase files. Even Oracle database uses .dbf extension for data files.

I understand. You can't be sure until you try but usually you'll know if you're running Oracle because you'll have oracle listener and other services running as well as a completely different folder structure. When you find files that are dbf somewhere, they're usually dBase because you can make a small database inside an application just by importing some libraries. So dBase isn't something that has to be installed on the computer but Oracle is.
