QS in my thread was meant to be Intel's feature, Quick Sync. I generally only use acronyms in the context of that thread, or if they are used industry wide. If there is doubt, I tend to stay away and just spell it out.

Exactly - I could see the use of QS in your thread becuase you mentioned Quick Sync in a previous post.

But if William is talking about servers - and doens't spell out that he's talking about people each and every time, there are just going to be problems. Now - it's possible that context will make the need to spell this out unnecessary, but expecting people in an ebbing and flowing community like this to read this OP and just know what William is talking about, yeah.. I wouldn't expect it to work.

That was a main reason for this post.. But, Can I ask Why you are using my full name?

I go by Will since the 6th Grade.. Looks weird seeing my full name plastered all over LOL

Makes me feel like I'm in trouble... LOL

Sorry - cause we've never called you Will? and your handle wasn't on the screen and I couldn't remember you screen name 😛

LOL I guess you're right. You guys never have called me Will.
Maybe on Facebook cause that's my name there.

LOL i dont have to ask Jono.. I'm sure I already know what he's going to say.

5:30-6:00 pm and he manually restarts everything and then everything works fine.
      Right now I

So for us following along at home, what was the actual problem and what was the fix? It looks like you were saying that the MSE updates were running at 5:30 or whenever, but was it actually trying to run a scan at that time? Was that the actual cause of the slowdowns?

The problem was that MSE was installing updates daily at 5-5:30 causing the Point of Sale that runs off of that PC to freeze and lock up until they were restarted.
      The fix?
I excluded our application directory from MSE updates and havent had a problem in 3 days.
I have checked and the updates are still coming in , but no system lock ups.

I don't see the correlation. How is excluding a directory from updates even a thing? I can see excluding a directory from a scan, but MSE doesn't get updates based on directories.

      This is what I know : okay? Stay with me here;

My terminals on the front of house were locking up every time a Security Update came through on my Back office PC. Causing the Site to have to restart the terminals manually every time at the same time, Daily.

After excluding the Directory for my application, I haven't had an issue in 3 days, and counting at multiple of my Windows 7 Sites.

Could it be that the updates were spinning up more RAM to install these updates?

Could it be that The System was False Positive hitting as @Dashrender suggested?

I wonder if it wasn't also running a scan at the same time using the newly installed updates? That is the only thing that makes sense. I wont argue with the results, I was just not satisfied with the explanation, because I couldn't follow the logic.

I tend to agree that a scan must be happening - otherwise updates alone shouldn't affect the operation of the PC.

So for some reason I couldn't get it to work with the to or from email addresses: however I set the rule to filter for Aloha_Support_forum and Bingo- They are no longer cluttering up my inbox!

Set it to skip the inbox and auto apply my filter, did the same for all matching conversations. Just had three come in and didnt get a single on in my inbox.
      I call that a win.

Bring a bunch of business cards. If you collect them from people, write on the back why you might contact them again. For example if you talk to them and find out they own a MSP as well, you write that on the back, so when you get back you don't contact them thinking they were the VoIP guy you talked to. It's cool to meet colleagues in other parts of the country where you don't want to post stuff publicly, but since you're not competing, you can share numbers with them. It's nice to be able to hand them a card.

Set your out of office reply and someone else cover your phones. It sucks to have to talk time out of a conference to take a call or pound out an email. Your time there is so limited, you need to make the most of it.

Travel light and make sure you have room for swag on the way back.

      0_1536843443200_netowrk error.PNG

No, because I carefully never do that, lol.

I didnt do this, this is from someone saying " This is how I think it goes" and changing settings.

      Also something to avoid 😉

Random people who don't know the basics, making completely crazy configuration changes... that's a disaster waiting to happen. Imagine if they were doing that on a PCI network or something 😉

They did! we use 2 NICs, one for internet, one for the PoS system so they are "seperated" the best they can be. They stacked and added IP's to the PoS NIC, So all of the PoS were accessing the internet...

Sure, but the internal POS network doesn't have a gateway to some place else inside it, right?
So you don't have a gateway on that network interface.

I dont believe there is a gateway, its just communicating within the PoS and the back office.

If that were the case then I shouldn't be getting this message correct?

Shouldn't. The warning seems like it would be genuine - it's warning you that someone messed up the configuration.

When I used to have these type of setups, I would set the gateway to the POS and set the metric to 10 for either that NIC or that subnet. That's assuming that you're talking directly to the one and only POS and nothing else on that network. While you don't have to alter the metric, it helped stop Windows from wigging out seeing two NICs or two IPs and two gateways on one NIC. If you experiment, you can always put it back. Different VASCs and different brands & processors specify what's ok with them. Because PCI.

@wrcombs I do! If you don't want to build it yourself, check out Dan's stuff at https://www.techandme.se/

      Specifically: https://shop.hanssonit.se/product/nextcloud-vm-microsoft-hyper-v/

I started with one of his builds, then as I became more familiar and comfortable, I started building them myself on Hyper-V. Now I have a couple on AWS LightSail. I don't use Nextcloud for too much, it's mostly for my pics, notes, and bookmarks.

My boss was pushing the compliance issues, Yes, Because it is his job to make sure compliance is met within every site. You're telling me, If im not mistaken, That following directions coming from the vendor is my boss being Dumb? or Being an Ass?

Straight from PCI Data Security Standard: Build and Maintain a Secure Network:
      1. Install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect cardholder data.
      2. Do no use Vendor- supplied Defaults for system passwords and other security parameters .

I guess reading this more thoroughly so I could continue this conversation: no where does it say It has to be a separate or isolated network, Only that It needs to be behind a firewall as far as Networking is concerned.

Correct, I'm telling you, straight up, that if your boss claims that those words in ANY WAY suggest you can't use a VLAN, he's either insanely stupid, or a ridiculous liar who thinks you easy to push around.

There is NOTHING about a separate network there. Not one thing.

I understand that now, at first I was a little confused, but now having seen and looked into everything more based off of what you are telling me , I find that everything you are saying makes perfect sense

Not that it means you can do something about it. But knowing that the boss is most likely just trying to blow you off, or just trying to make things complicated for some personal reason at the expense of the company makes it far better to be able to at least learn from the scenario.

Your quality take aways here include...

Your boss is not to be trusted (why, we don't know, but a reliable source, he is not.) Look for another job (you know this, but it's a reminder.) You now know PCI far better than before (and better than your boss.) You now have more experience in evaluating someone giving excuses rather than actual logic.

Why do companies push their employees to spam and such on Thread websites?
Sounds like a great way to push people away from you product.

Because it costs them next to nothing to spam hundreds of websites.

And it only takes one sucker to click through and make that phone call to earn a profit.

      Yeah, some quick math...

A full time spammer can be hired overseas for $300/mo. That's a MONTH. And that's high, $200 is definitely plausible. All they have to do is join websites, post pre-written spam copy. Simplest job ever. They can spam maybe 100 communities a day. That's 2,800 a month. Out of 2,800 posts, it would take maybe an average of five "customers" to cover the cost of that for really cheap software.

      Easy math.

You went pretty fast up the hyperbole chain there @scottalanmiller. I don't think this discussion is helpful to continue with the ways you're choosing to discuss things.

It's not hyperbole, it's just common sense. You can't say a firewall isn't a firewall because you don't feel it does enough firewalling compared to routing. That's just silly.

Anything that you use to show why that's silly, will sound ridiculous, but it's a silly thing to have to explain. It's clearly not a viable way to name things.

A router is a router, no matter how much firewalling it does. It's status as a router is absolutely based on if it routes, not "if it does other things in some quantity."

Hyperbole would only apply if the silly examples were to some degree sillier than the original language. But they are not. The "I'm a man and I'm 42" is identical in every way to "it's a router and it is a firewall." Not in the slightest way exaggerated.

Now, I thought that you had installed this via Chocolatey, not the Windows installer, though. Based on other threads.

I did install via Chocolatey does that have something to do with it?

Yes, a lot. Chocolatey is its own package management system. So Get-WmiObject knows nothing about it and can't interact with it. It's not "installed" in Windows terms, it's just "sitting there."

Actually, no. It is almost always there for windows to see. Because most chocolatey installs actually use the default windows installer. Just with a /silent switch (or whatever is appropriate).

so by this information, one of the above commands should have worked?

Not reliably. Only in the case, which might be "sometimes" and might be "often" and might be "almost always", where the one package manager used the other. So no matter how often it works, it's not "meant to work" and works only by coincidence. The coincidence might be really often, but it is still coincidence and not working by design.
