In a case like this, it can be hard if you are new to helpdesk or feel like you want to trust your coworkers to be professional and to feed you all relevant information that they could have. But they rarely do, even other IT people. The nature of end users (the coworker becomes an end user in this scenario) is to hold back the info, or to attempt to "interpret" it through their vision of what's happening.

But here is the problem: the person stating the problem (that they cannot solve) is the one person we are sure can't tell us everything that we need to know because, if they could, they'd be able to solve the problem (in most cases.) So the person who most wants to "filter" what is said, is the person least likely to be able to determine what a good filter is. Even a well meaning person in that position isn't useful.

      I disagree

Good for you, you've never seen a bullet point list. If you're writing complete sentences as bullet points you're doing something wrong.

any books worth looking at? Looking at expanding some more, and I know Automation makes jobs way easier.

This (https://channel9.msdn.com/Series/GetStartedPowerShell3/01) combined with doing tasks in PowerShell. In my opinion, as others have states, it's easier to learn via doing tasks. Added bonus is you complete a task with PowerShell or script it, then see if / how you can improve your script.

wrcombs.com is available. Go register it for a year at godaddy (or whoever) for $12.

Then, like @thwr pointed out in his list, use something like ad.wrcombs.com as your AD domain.

      doesn't sound horrible. thanks.

Welcome. Staying away from .local domains, plus knowing you are not using somebody else's domain will make your life SO MUCH easier. No need to start learning bad habits in the beginning.

Check out Fortigate product. FortiNet offers documentation on setup of their firewalls for PCI DSS compliance:
      https://help.fortinet.com/fos60hlp/60/Content/FortiOS/fortigate-compliance/PCI-DSS.htm?Highlight=PCI
They office a subscription service whereby they manage patches/updates for their firewalls as well as monitoring (specifically, Logging, to me it really isn't monitoring) in order to match the "managed firewall" checkbox. Now, I only have a little experience with Fortigate's as we just installed one in our data center as we have a customer requesting us to be compliant (for no apparent reason other than they want us to be, we do not store credit card data and do any processing via https web site)

@WrCombs Also remember once you have vm's setup and running they are just files. So that also makes it real easy to backup with robocopy, veeam, rsync or borg. Its one of the many great advantages of virtualizing, your expanding your options alot.

No, they are not. @dbeato has clearly stated it works offline once programmed. Yes @NDC mentioned a rare condition where it failed.

None of that matters. This unit is not going out to the restaraunt. He only needs the fucking thing to configure the tablets in the office. The restaurant will be providing s the wifi for the production closed network.

      this

People are fucking too stupid to remember from the top of a thread to the bottom I swear.

Anyway, you can use the Datto just like I outlined for the UniFi. Assuming you can get it programmed by someone.

OK late to the thread. We use a cheap travel router for this purpose. GL.iNET GL-MT300N think we paid $25 for it. Supports up to 4 SSID's and can do VLAN's though we only use 1. We can actual do wifi to wifi bridging with it. We use it for these wifi Sapling clocks that need to connect to a pre-provided WPA2-PSK ssid for initial setup.
This is the newest version: https://store.gl-inet.com/collections/travel-routers/products/gl-mt300n-v2-mini-smart-router
Can get these on Amazon now for $25

      Back to the OP.

@WrCombs wants to things most likely...

a desktop environment to run in - So Fedora or Ubuntu most likely... and then a separate "server" box to install Linux Server OSes on to experiment with to do things like - setup FreePBX, setup NC, setup file server, etc.

      yes.
I could even VM those, right? or no? - Forgive the newbness, but I'm thinking a Desktop and then run a VM Boxes with server OS's to do what @Dashrender is saying and thoughts on which ones to try.

Boxes is weird, but yes. Throw Fedora or Ubuntu onto a laptop or desktop, install KVM, and virtualize anything that you want. You get a fully functional, and gorgeous desktop environment, but can test any server OS or alternative desktop OS that you like.

      sounds like the likely chose..
I know they're out there; anyone got the link for the guides?

      for installing KVM ;
I'll start another list of projects that I'm going to work on and go from there

      https://computingforgeeks.com/how-to-install-kvm-on-fedora/

Did I not have a guide here on ML?

For KVM on Fedora? Don't recall one.

Apparently not. I just did some searching, and it is mostly posts and screenshots of the various things in other people's threads.

Since that was the same OP, I'm guessing that that is not the issue with this one.

I would hope so, but we're all human and the issue seems very similar. I think he had another one where it was something about 2 instances of the server app like I mentioned in an earlier post but I couldn't find that one.

Makes me glad that I'm not doing 1st level support anymore 🙂 And even then, our 1st level guys have more discretion than this, both our internal IT team and the (currently) small team for external support.

@notverypunny said in zip and . rar files?:

The advantage that I remember rar having was that it could split and then recombine an archive at the appropriate size for floppy disks. Seems foolish now but in the era of dial-up and 1.44 MB 3.5" diskettes it was a killer feature that winzip (also a paid software once upon a time, not always built into windoze) didn't have.

Correct, that was the huge benefit to rar over zip in the 90’s. You are also correct that native zip support in windows is relatively recent.

If by recent you mean Windows XP...

LOL, yeah, 18 years ago at this point 🙂

Even with this thing out there?
      https://www.asus.com/us/Phone/ZenFone-6-Edition-30/

That looks awesome. Seen a price yet?

Just the pricing here in Sweden, https://eshop.asus.com/sv-SE/zenfone-6-edition-30-12-512-gb-matte-black.html

8,300 SEK (roughly $850), which right now, buying in USD is a sweet deal because 1 USD = 9.8 SEK which is the highest I've seen it ever 🙂

Tempting, but still expensive. I think I'd do it if it did 5g. But it doesn't seem to.

Why do you care about 5G? Aren't you moving back to the US? who has 5G here - really has it?

Because That is a phone I would want to keep for like 3 years, and San Diego is the kind of place 5g will actually be a thing relatively soon.

Considering your options then.. I'd wait at least 1 years before buying a phone.

      That's probably a good idea.

Phone under pillow would never work for me.. two things 1) I move so much the phone would be under the bed for sure, 2) it would be to muffled and I'd sleep through any vibration.

The watch though... that might help.

I move a lot and it stays put. I don''t have a case, so the phone is very smooth. It doesn't shift around from the pillow moving.

I can wake up from vibrations from a phone a floor away so....

lucky/unlucky you... I could sleep through a tornado taking the roof off.

      HKLM\system\current control set\services\CSC\ start = 0

      HKLM\System\Current Control Set\Services\NetBT\Parameters\UseNewSMB set to 0

      Uninstalling reinstalling NIC
