    • UBNT is about to update their factory default firmwares

Posted a couple of issues and feature requests yesterday and just got some feedback from UBNT-Ken (is there any Ubiquity representative here at ML?)

Good news: They plan to update their factory default firmwares
      https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UNMS-Beta/Issue-Outdated-firmware-on-new-EdgeSwitches/m-p/2269274

Unpacking and adding devices to UNMS right after booting would be a great feature. UNMS could then patch them to the latest version available.

    • RE: Remote desktop question

      Wait... What?

      • You are trying to install a printer and an application on a remote machine?
      • You don't have any administrative privileges?
      • Is it a domain-joined or standalone machine?

From what I understand, your problem boils down to missing permissions.

How to regain admin access on a Windows machine
This will only work if the Windows partition has not been encrypted with tools like BitLocker.

Standalone: There are tools available to regain access, for example chntpw, part of SystemRescueCD. There are dozens of tutorials available, just google for it.

Domain-joined: This sounds odd to me. There's not a single person with domain admin privileges? You could use the same approach as above and create a local administrator account on the machine in question, but you shouldn't. Instead, contact the person who has access. Please note: Creating a local admin on a client machine won't get you domain admin privileges.

Please provide more precise information next time.

    • RE: What Are You Doing Right Now

It's Super-Duper-Rebecca-Day, my wife's birthday. She doesn't know what I've planned for today:

      • We'll start with a little breakfast
      • A little bit of shopping after that until
      • Lunch in some restaurant of her choice.
      • Next would be sitting at the Alster and reading a book or something (shes really loves that).
      • A bit more shopping in downtown Hamburg
      • At 17:00h we will slowly start moving towards the Reeperbahn where Schmitz Tivoli is, a tiny but great musical and comedy stage. We will visit a show there at 19:00h (7pm).
      • Maybe we'll get a cake and coffee before.

So basically a 'everything-you-like' day for her. Hope she enjoys.

    • IT Kitchen & Grill

Just thought it could be a good idea to start collecting recipes when I had a look at our "What did you have for lunch or dinner today" thread.

This thread here is supposed to be a table of contents. Please post a link when you add something so I can update this post. Every recipe should contain the tags "IT Kitchen and Grill" and "Recipe".

A posts title should have a "Recipe: " prefix. Think about adding a picture to your post. A good recipe would contain:

      • A few introductory words
      • One or more pictures
      • Ingredients
      • Directions

Feel free to contribute whatever you like, be it a drink from India, a rice meal from West-Africa or your favorite pasta from Italy.

Just heard that a small ISP north of Hamburg offers 1GBit/s sync FTTH, cable TV and phone including landline calls etc for 80 EUR per month without any throttling or traffic limit. 500 MBit/s sync would be 20 EUR less. I moved from the area they are operating in like 5 or 6 years ago...

Our new dishwasher sucks a bit: when the program finishes, it beeps five or six times. Not that bad, but if you don't turn it off afterwards, it will beep again every few minutes...

Now the "eco" program runs for nearly 3 hours and I had to wait for it to finish before going to bed.

New rule: Do not turn on the dishwasher past 21:00h.

Mine has the option to delay 2, 4, or 6 hours. make it run at 2 AM, works for me.

From tech to tech: sure. But my wife doesn't like that function for whatever reason 😉 She's also not using it on our washing machine (the one for clothes)

Well, clothes aren't something you want to to just sit in the machine when the load it done, so there's a significant difference.

If your dishwasher is close to your bedroom, I suppose the delay would be something you wouldn't want.
In my case, the dishwasher is near where I watch TV. I don't want it running while I'm watching TV, but my bed room is a long ways away, so running at 2 AM is great, can't hear it, does not wake us up.

Super silent model. Very hard to hear at all.

But... I just had the following discussion:
Me: I could get rid of that damn beeping with just a bit of soldering
Becci: Honey, no! And also don't think about installing Linux on the dishwasher.

      Hmpf.

Just got home, fairly shitty day...but this one sums it up....

customer has a problem with a printer on a Mac, trying to fix it by removing and reinstalling etc, all the usual stuff. My test print works fine to it from word, but he's trying to print an excel sheet. Not got a clue (and I still hate macs) so tell him I'm going to do some research and is that ok. He says yes....so I look into it, find a few possible solutions, ring him back "Nope, you've run out of time, I have things to do now." - well....it's obviously not that ephin important then is it.

Yes! Vacations! Today was my last work day for 2016. What a year... my load average was like 2.5 - 3.0* during the last couple of weeks (months) and I absolutely don't know how I managed to get through all that stuff. Felt like running through a minefield, blindfolded.

Anyway, it's Christmas time now and I won't be back in the office until January 4th.

Time to do some fun stuff. Sadly, my dad doesn't have time this year to work on the model train project. But I've got some pretty interesting ideas on my list regarding communication between Arduino's and more high-level systems (x86/amd64, Raspberry Pi's) using MQTT on my list.

any *NIX admin should get it 😉
