The first batch of (my first) Ubiquiti gear arrived today: three EdgeSwitches ES-48-500W. I couldn't wait to get my dirty fingers on them and fired one up just for "science purposes". You know 😉

Solid case, super-intuitive UI, and... I just like 'em. You get a lot of bang for the buck. Half an hour later I've replaced one of my old Cisco's. Will replace two more tomorrow and even plan to order more of them.

      Next step: UNMS.

PS: I'm still busy with a lot of things. But we're doing fine for the most part. Kind of.

@thwr Thanks :D. I got notification that they want an in-person interview tomorrow, so at the very least it's moving in the right direction. Worst case is getting some interview XP.

Worst case would be an interview about XP 😉

Is there a way to incorporate an article/blog portion in addition to the discussion threads? It seems difficult to find things here overall, and there is some very good information that is harder to locate/sift through since it isn't distilled down to a how-to/article.

That's a major problem here. We had some very good discussions in the past, but sometimes it just seems that information vanishes into void. NodeBB features a great search function and content tagging, but that's only half of what could be needed.

What about a big "Community best practices" project. We could start to work out best practices based on repetitive topics, for example. How to create users? How to I setup XYZ. How to enable AD Recycle Bin... There's so much that could be collected.

      Community Knowledgebase?

Maybe not just a knowledgebase but everything the average SMB admin could need.

We could tag a bunch of threads something specific for that and work on it collectively

Basically ... the Hitchhiker's Guide to IT

      I like it!

Just got my first bad review in my year and a half of employment.
      So there's that.

apparently I broke stuff and no one told me; so I couldn't fix it.
I've been their only point of contact since they open and refused to talk to somebody else; and some small shit about "not being knowledgeable"
I've told them I'm not their contact and they need to use the help desk because I'm not always available .

Who did the review? I bet it was your direct supervisor, wasn't it?

no review has been done; just a negative customer review from previous work done with this site as I was buried in projects, calls, and other emergency issues.

Ah. Ah well. You have a valid excuse. Take it on the nose and continue working slave ^W^W job hunting.

yeah, and i've told this customer I am not your only contact.
Will not be your only contact, it's not happening like that.

But I'm the bad guy cause "he has to fix the stuff I do"
      Which, they didn't call me.

No call... no ticket... no problem!

    • RE: Terminals & VNC

@BBigford Really don't want to disturb your monolog, but there's a password only auth option in some servers and clients. Maybe your client or server doesn't implement that very well. Have you tried something like good old TightVNC on the client side?

    • RE: Remounting of HDD in Windows

Big picture: Disable automount for volume, set readonly flag, mount. Since it's readonly, no write operation should occur. A mechanically damaged spindle can still suffer from this, e.g. heads scratching on the platters.

@scottalanmiller hehe. Bonus points? Well, I think I just need to poke around a bit.

Uhm, in this case... I will have to delete my account. What's the point in helping others without proper points and medals?

The question that should be asked is does the dedication to the IT industry mean you should sacrifice your hobbies?

A better question, if IT isn't your hobby, should you have a different job? One that more closely matches you true likes and desires.

Would you ask a car mechanic the same who doesn't want to fix cars in his free time?

    • RE: Random Thread - Anything Goes

@NattNatt Thats probably because users are able to submit questions, there are nearly 1,000 as of today. Submitted six of them myself.

As for the range of topics within the questions: IT is very broad as of today - no more "Are you an IBM MVS or HP3000/9000 guy?" - just thought that the above "which" command is pretty basic knowledge, even for non-kernel hackers.
