    • HTML5 streaming video (Android/WP on tablets/smartphones)

I'm not much into website "development", but I need to create a small ASP.NET HTML5 site which allows some users to watch videos using up to date Windows Phone 10 and Android 5+ devices using IE and Chrome. It's kind of a small demonstration shop in a much larger context.

Content would be some H.264 videos which I wouldn't like to convert (some Full HD videos), if possible. Information on Google seems to be outdated, misleading, incorrect, written by confused authors and what not.

So does anyone know how to do that quick and dirty? Is there finally some HTML5 tag for this? The project isn't about HTML5 or streaming, video streaming is just meant to be an eyecatcher.

@scottalanmiller We're seeing an effect in EDU some of us call bulimia-nervosa-learning. Memorizing as much as possible right before an exam and forgetting everything the very second after. Maybe that's related to this.

Sweet mother of god I had no idea anyone still used DAT160

How long a period did it take to kill 4 of them? Are you cleaning them regularly? Do you use fresh media every couple of years?

DAT80 was the thing when I first had to deal with tapes. They upgraded that to an LTO2 20 tape robot eventually.

Same here but we went to LTO3 dual head library with dual magazines! They are really a beautiful piece of engineering.

And not even that expensive. Last time I heard about DAT was like 15 years ago. We're using a 24 Slot Tandberg LTO-5 SAS 2U Lib (OEM'd Overland, like virtually everything else on the market) with single mag and single drive, enough for our environment at this point in time. Tape may be oldschool, but they're working like a charm.

Another option could be a VTL (virtual tape library). That's basically a translator between your backup software and an image file.

      Dear Lord!!!

I'm really waiting for the following question:

What is the primary function of the power button on your PC?

      1. Turn on / wake up your PC
      2. Shutdown the nearest nuclear plant
      3. Make a coffee
      4. Save all open files

@gjacobse Looks awesome man! I need to clean up my work bench and dig into some of this stuff again. Once the good weather hits I struggle to work on any of my projects.

Well, I know for sure what I will be doing this winter... My father is building an analog MΓ€rklin H0 model train course with tons of rails and trains - and wants some automation with Arduino's and Raspberry's. Now if he wants it, guess who needs to do it πŸ˜‰

Anyway, will be funny I think. Only thing where I'm not yet sure is the frontend, thought about something that works like webbased SCADA. Anyone knows something like this, preferably FOSS?

It would be a nightmare to do this on a medium to large size network without WSUS control. It is a good command for updating a pc here or there.

You will most probably have some means of deploying updates in larger environments, like WSUS or something bigger like SCCM.

Yeah sir. I was just adding that comment in case a rookie admin sees this post and tries to send the command out to the whole network.

      You mean like

      Invoke-Command -ComputerName (Get-ADComputer -filter * | Select -Expand Name) -Script { wuactl.... }

(DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME WORK)

Very good read. I'm sharing your philosophy and like I said yesterday, I'm a console fetishist. You just need to use what you have when you are in a recovery console or when your server just does not have access to that NFS export or SMB share where all your fancy tools and scripts are.

I think it's way more important to understand how things actually work. This will also help a lot when it comes to tracking down errors.

PS: This is not about necro'ing an old thread, but the topic just came up once more.

    • RE: Ubuntu Server - Virtual Sound Card

Ok, got it. It's actually pretty simple. Tried this in a fresh new Ubuntu 16.04.1 VM on VirtualBox. The VM does not have sound hardware (disabled in VirtualBox).
I had some problems with the recorded file, there was just white noise. Turned out something went wrong when I tried to record the output using arecord and pipe that to lame to get a MP3. Switched to WAV instead.

      Preparations:

      sudo modprobe snd-aloop
      sudo apt-get install alsa

      Check devices:

      tw@ubuntu-snddummy:~$ sudo aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
Home directory not accessible: Permission denied
card 0: Loopback [Loopback], device 0: Loopback PCM [Loopback PCM]

        Subdevice #6: subdevice #6
        Subdevice #7: subdevice #7
      tw@ubuntu-snddummy:~$

      Play something

      sudo aplay -D hw:0,0,0 sample.wav
Playing WAVE 'sample.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo

      Record (different shell)

      sudo arecord -D hw:0,1,0 -f cd record.wav

PS: Did everything as root to avoid any permission issues.

Sure, but a dead horse won't bite back. No, seriously, I'm afraid about the low level of knowledge some people are having. The quiz is just a little representation of that.

You know, I know so little about this. I think I'm going to read up on it. I didn't really understand why there was a EU to begin with and my uneducated point of view had me a bit worried about it.

Because they didn't want there to be a reason to have anymore massive wars. They wanted peace and unity. Since the EU was formed, there has been 0 conflict between any of the member states...the longest period of peace in the region for hundreds of years or longer... It has so many positives to its member states, the European Convention of Human Rights and the open market agreement, freedom of movement and many more

OK, so before I form any opinions, why would Britain leave? They don't strike me as war mongers. LOL

Because the EU was destroying this nation.

      And... how exactly?
