    • RE: Hyper V - CPU Processing Power

      I would contact McAfee support.

You've just bought the product, give them the chance to help fix it.

If they cannot fix it, then consider getting a refund and switching products.

EDIT: Every software company will have glitches/flaws. So when they do go wrong, use their support. Nothing is 100% free of issues. What is unfair on the software provider is not to tell them about the problem and not give them the chance to help their customer.

    • Lab/Demo/Training Server, Refurb

      The goal

A server which can be used for proof of concepts, training, demonstrations and a panic disaster server if needed but no one will cry if the server is damaged on site.

XenServer is the hyper visor of choice, trying out Xen Orchestra for the first time with it but with XenCenter as a backup.

I found this Dell T310 from a UK refurb company.

      Arrived in very good condition.

      • All settings properly reset to factory.
      • Working iDrac
      • Disks were wiped and clean.

    • Shopping for hosting

So I was shopping around for dedicated server hosting.

Got a test machine at one provider but a lot of their install images were out of date, i.e 2008 hyper-v, ESXI 5.0 - XenServer 6.5

So I asked them when the images would be updated and the response I got was that a lot of the software was not compatible with the hardware.

      Now here's a fun part.

Windows Server 2012 Standard - Compatible
Windows Server 2012 DataCentre - Not Compatible

Not a licensing problem, but I was told that the hardware was not compatible.

      ooook...Onto another provider.

    • RE: System Fonts: Installing when not an Admin

      The correct solution is.

If the application wants to have access to certain folders, you give the user permission to those folders/files and so on. There are auditing tools that will tell you what a program is trying to access and run.

Conversely, if an app wants to have the firewall off, you ask the vendor what ports need to be open. Again, there might be tools which scan a program to see what it is trying to do when it is communicating.

Finally, fire the software vendor who built that app, UAC has been out for 10 years. If in 10 years they can't be bothered to update their software to a more modern way of working, what else can't they be bothered to do?

Instead of developing one, right from scratch, would it be a bad idea to develop one, based on an existing Open Source solution ?

Because of the nature of software, you kind of need to start from scratch to get what you want, A lot of things have to be re-done and re-written when you take someone else's tool and try to shoe horn it in.

And when said shoehorning is complete... the code is generally... very messy.

And there are often limitations with what you can change, so before you know it the cost is much higher than starting from scratch with a clean slate.

but they use Symantec, so I'm not even sure they have any infection at all.

They might have improved it but Symantec almost never deals with pups and other light threats, I've seen it smile and wave at Cryptolocker months after it came out because it was part of a silly toolbar.

Instead of giving the whole method, I'll give you the prevention.

Disable hibernation. Do not let any machine have hibernation mode if you want to use Bitlocker.

If an attacker gains ahold of the machine whilst in hibernate, they can and will unlock all the data.

    • RE: GTX1080, 1070, 1060... which would you get for gaming? 2-3 years future proof?

No such thing as future proofing in an industry which changes every 3 months.

I'm rocking an entry level Nvidia card, was about £80 when I got it.

It runs almost everything really really nicely and it's a 2 year old system.

Get what makes you happy today, don't worry about future games/changes because no one knows what'll happen in 6 months.

      @nvila said

i feel the detailed IT request form should cover my ass instead of allowing the approach above.

If covering the ass and avoiding mistakes if the goal, you are in the wrong industry.

It is entirely your job to interpret or understand the wishes of your client, whether as an in house staff member working for a company or not, you must understand the task and what you have been asked to do.

So if you are unsure of the needs, you go back to the "Client" and find out what those needs are. If you are part of a culture which does the blame game, well that's a sign of a bigger problem.

      800/800 connection in a hotel.

All of that was purely for the AV and events network, which consisted of 1 in house tech when no events were on. It was glorious....for the 2 hours I was there.

    • RE: Ubiquiti switches: UniFi vs EdgeMax

EdgeSwitch = More specs, more features, individual boxes, no single pane of glass management.

Unifi Switch = Less specs, managed by a controller with less features.

      Which one should you buy?

If you want traditional switch management, go with an EdgeSwitch. If you are happy to trade off features and config options, Unifi.

      I5
      8GB
      256GB SSD

      Done.

No point looking at dedicated GPUs for PowerDirector. You'll get almost nothing from it. Local storage, just edit live projects and shunt projects onto the file-server when editing is complete. Video editors do not eat lots of Ram and the I7 is wasted on software like that.

    • Webroot - Malicious autorun scripts on USBs

      0_1492681986125_screenshot.PNG

This happened on my own laptop.

Plugged in a customer pen drive to find all files/folders had been replaced by shortcuts which opened the original file or folder but also launched a script, this behaviour repeated itself on other USB sticks plugged in so something corrupted the autorun process.

I also found this in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Run

      wscript.exe //D "C:\Users\BreffniPotter-DaraIT\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Office\Microsoft Word.WsF"

I'm using a policy which has all the features enabled and set to high.

Opened a ticket with Webroot so will post back the reply.
