Looks like a compelling product but I can't touch it until they have an approach to data handling and so on.

What do you mean by this?

      • In essence, they have no terms & conditions for their online backup service. This is important.
      • Zero policy or mention about data security, A US owned company holding EU data is a big deal. Every provider has this, anyone who doesn't, run a mile.
      • I did email their support to query this, all I got was that the data was hosted on Microsoft Azure and here's a list of technical things we do to protect the data.
      • No HTTPS on the customer portal, yes customer information should be protected.

It's a real shame because it's a great price point, solid feature-set (Webroot intergration, woo!) but I'm really nervous about trusting it with client data. I specifically asked about US/EU data rules and they didn't really answer the question. Not a good first sign.

For those in the UK or EU, you would be giving a two fingered salute to your data protection laws by using this product as it stands. It is not enough that Azure is the hosting platform, the regulations insist that the provider (In this case Atera) who has control over the rented infrastructure adheres to certain steps and procedures.

    • Aetherstore in the real world

      Re: NTG Partners with AetherStore!

So I remember getting excited about this product when it was on beta, never used it but heard good things.

@shannon reached out recently on Spiceworks and it reminded me I needed to try this out properly.

So 2 months after this bit of news, my question goes out to current Aetherstore users.

      • How resilient has it been? When has it broken or failed?
      • How does it perform speed wise?
      • Ideal use cases for you?

      http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1411499-new-it-videos-what-do-you-want-to-see

What video content would you want to see made?

Thinking of doing product tests, benchmarks, some short and sweet 101 style videos on different topics at Dara IT.

What would you want to see explained quickly on camera? Do you need help speaking "boss" on a topic?

@Dashrender Your confused. There is only a fee for credit cards (both personal and business.) What I posted came directly from the PayPal website.

All payment gateways charge a fee if you are a business.

I loathe Paypal with a vengeance as they cripple small businesses with their involuntary audits where they can lock your money up for months. Stripe is much nicer 🙂

    • RE: Aetherstore in the real world

      Some performance tests

When Aetherstore is first powered up, the average speed is around 10 MB per second.

After it is settled, it can go as high as 20 MB per second but the average is around 15.

The read speed can go as high as 25 MB per second. -

The test network are virtual machines running on SSDs, the VMs themselves measure performance of 450 MB per second when testing the 😄 drive. This performance was measured on the node where the drive was mounted.

      http://mangolassi.it/topic/7020/ntg-partners-with-aetherstore/30

So the performance matches what Aetherstore says it will be.

After dumping a load of data into a store, the read/write speeds do not suffer whilst it does the background task of replicating to other nodes. Even if I force a sync from the dashboard.

      0_1454064189840_Aetherstore Benchmark.PNG

So far so good in terms of performance.

I didn't actually read this more than the 1st paragraph, neither will those sending a PM for help 🙂 Too much word salad, didn't read.

I agree with the sentiment but those who understand this hopefully don't do it, those who don't understand it won't read this and will keep doing it.

889 words 5119 characters, less really is more when communicating a point.

Well, the employees have finally screwed around on Facebook long enough. The boss is asking for a solution to cut facebook access from the office.

Their mobile phones on a data plan will beat your content filter 🙂

Do you have any other products on your network at the moment that could be adapted?

It might be worth identifying if the boss wants to spend money tackling this issue or if he wants to tackle non productivity.

You've blocked facebook? I'll just read MangoLassi. It, block that I'll read bbc news.

    • RE: The Price Is Right

What I don't get for a sales team looking to make money, surely they want to qualify the client as in or out as fast as possible, so by showing the ballpark range the client can already opt into the solution and you waste less time on people "Looking for pricing" and then you can focus on less people but the spenders get more attention.

There's just this madness that if we hide the price, we can fiddle with it up or down depending on the client we get.

    • Latest Nvidia Driver breaks your card - Don't update yet.

TLDR: New driver breaks your system, don't update yet.

      http://www.destructoid.com/don-t-install-the-newest-nvidia-driver-it-s-breaking-pcs-347362.phtml?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

"The 364.47 driver was released yesterday, and is meant to include optimisations for The Division, Hitman, Need for Speed, Ashes of the Singularity and Rise of the Tomb Raider. The drivers can also severely damage your computer.

Blue screens, failing to boot up Windows, restart loops, losing sound, graphical artifacting and even burned out cards are all problems which are being reported by users on various sites. It doesn’t seem to be specific to one brand or generation of card, either.

Nvidia has released a statement saying that the problems lie in the express installation settings, and that it is “actively investigating the issue”.

I am personally running the driver with my GTX 980 on a non-upgraded installation of Windows 10 64-bit, installed using express installation, and have found my entire PC now locks up after a few minutes of The Division. Enough people having more serious issues for me to suggest you wait until Nvidia releases a fixed version, or roll back your drivers if you’ve been unlucky enough to already install it."

    • Password Complexity, Good or bad?

      https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1519073-password-complexity-good-or-bad?

There are lots of different thoughts/opinions about this, I just want to get some feedback on what people think of the below possible options.

This is for Active Directory, specifically Windows logons.

      Option A)

      Password complexity enforced
      Change every 30 days
3 out of 4 character types must be used
      Minimum length of 7 charecters
Password history tracked, cannot repeat same password
      Two factor authentication (MAYBE)
Group Policies would ensure there is a minimum standard of complexity but generally, if the passwords are harder to remember i.e

      $0mpanyna%e

      Option B)

      Password complexity not enforced
Minimum length of 12 or 16 characters, encourage pass-phrases rather than passwords.
      Change every 180 days.
      Cannot repeat same password
      Two factor authentication (MAYBE)
A pass-phrase would be much easier to remember, they can keep it unique and it encourages security rather than arbitrary requirements that make it harder for humans, easier for computers.

      HorseBatteryStaple

I wish I could put a poll in here, the general question is with the pros & cons of the above, which is a better system for a company who wants better real world security.
