@Pete-S said in What subdomain for web conference/meetings?:

      Thanks!

meet.example.com looks more generic so I'll use that.

I agree. Seems potentially less confusing for users.

@Dashrender said in Meeting software - how do you handle it?:

My boss had an online meeting today - and of course this presenter wanted to use Skype, plain ol' Skype, not Skype for Business.
Skype for Business is installed on Windows 10 by default (which I have not removed) but seemingly, Skype for Business will only allow logons from MS business accounts (which I suppose makes sense).
So - my boss couldn't do her meeting because she was missing the needed software.

So let's get back to the original issue...

Only the boss can determine what software she is going to allow. Nothing that she says, requires, demands, etc. matter, because she's the boss and her actual decision is what goes. Period. No amount of IT banter in this forum can change that, it's fact. Your only way to change this, is to get her removed. So if "do what is needed, instead of what is said" is done, then obviously the correct action is to get her fired. That's not going to happen, so let's not talk like that's an option. She's the boss, she makes the rules, and using these products are her decision, end of story.

Skype for Business isn't a factor here.

Your boss could do her meeting. That she didn't is, again, all on her. Yes, you can help here if she tells you what she has decided to use and asks you how to use it. But she wasn't missing software, she just didn't know how to use a product she agreed to use and presumably didn't ask for help early enough on it.

In this one case, the fix is training the head of IT how to use a web based Skype interface. That's easy if she is okay with that. This assumes many things, though, as it seems that many of the problems come from the boss being capricious and illogical. So any given fix may or may not make her happy, we can't tell.

In other cases, there is no universal answer. We fix this by not allowing other companies to dictate our software stack. Things like Skype are allowed specifically because they work in any browser. But things like Webex are not because... we simply don't have the infrastructure to make them work and it is on the vendor to provide viable systems.

At the end of the day, she is the boss and her actions not her words are her actual rules. Words that conflict with actions aren't your mandate, they cannot be.

Seems to - though I've not had any calls to test it.... if you wish,. call away to test. But it did pick up the Jabra Headset and the Logictech Camera.

I've rarely ever used Skype for business purposes. The only time I can think of that I did use it is for talking to NTG.

Yeah, and MQ claims it's the only thing that customers use, but I never talk to any company that has it.

I had 4 customer calls with it this week. 2 of them were vendors. People request it as an option. I would guess cause of Headphone for their desktop.

Not that I can see why this really matters - but are these customers still making calls over the PSTN? or via direct SIP to SIP connections with you/others?

I'm not sure where you are going. But the conversation was that customers use Skype for calling long distance. Every company everywhere still uses the PSTN, but lots like to avoid it especially for desktop sharing since that doesn't support that. Skype doesn't do SIP, so if the point was that they were making Skype calls, it means by definition no SIP or PSTN.

      It's working thus far -

I went to SKYPE and installed the RPM and installed signed in with no trouble.

I'm still on the LIVE USB version, but happy that it's there. A bit easier when I have a full keyboard/mouse to work with.

Looking at dual boot configurations / process now.

The web app is often better, if you have issues, just switch to the web version.

I should have mentioned it before,.. but I did try to use the Web,.. it was trying to do some type of account merge of my MS and Gmail account - some weirdness. And never 'worked'. Of course since I'm here at it,.. I can give it another go and see what it comes up with.

Oh yes, MS is doing some weird new account stuff that is a bit of a problem.

This time It didn't - so much have finished even though I cancelled it, quit and powered off....

Ah nice. This will be a nice change.

Some of the WP10 updates broke things. There was one that left me unable to use any Hotmail contacts for about 7 weeks. They disappeared after one update, then a bit later came back wouldn't open and I couldn't use them to text/call/email people. Another seemed to lower battery life to less than a day.
Since late summer though there have been no problems I have noticed.

That doesn't instil faith in their abilities.

He's talking about during the beta. I haven't heard of these issue since the RTM of Windows 10 Mobile.

@scottalanmiller thats the first link i checked but for some reason is not opening for me. Just logged in with personal and works fine. Video and audio calls for now, don't think screen sharing is available. But this is big news, and I hope this works on the smart tv browsers too soon, as I am in the process of getting tiny PCs on conference rooms to connect to our smart TVs for Skype conf setup connecting all offices.
