      Very odd.

I’ll address a Linux system in the future at some point and move over so it can run full time.

Worth it if you have a hypervisor running somewhere with enough extra resources for it - otherwise, in a home environment - not worth it.

Everyone is always waiting for someone else to report bugs and issues, that's why they take so long to get fixed. Not as bad with FOSS, but a big reason with MS for example.

But I don't know that it is a bug. It's reasonable that it might be, but it's just one possibility.

I remember this has been discussed on the forums sometime back when...

I'd like to have a master host file & push this out to Linux & Windows servers & desktops.

Anyone have a good how to guide?

One more thing, you'll want to use file.managed in a State file.

That way, you keep a master copy on Git and only need to edit that. Saltstack will take care of the rest and make sure all minions have that updated file.

Otherwise, with salt-cp, you have to manually SSH to the salt-master server and run the command. I'd rather just update the file in VSCode, then be done with it...

In your State file, you can do Linux and Windows using an If statement, having it do it one way for each OS.

      I use grains, os_family, etc.

@phlipelder said in Use Hyper-V to replicate Linux vm file share:

Hyper-V Replica would work in this situation with a few caveats.

There is a 15 second limit on replication cycles. If the VMs are running database/active services this could be a problem.

That would be handled earlier in the process by the backup job. If the backup is good, the replication won't cause an issue. If the backup is bad, the replication can't fix it, of course, but will replicate the bad backup. But the only place that this can be addressed is in the backup step, the replication is of backup files, so not at a point in the process where it matters.

"Garbage in garbage out" never seems to go away. It's been the bane of our existence since the switch to image/block based backups. :S

File backups suffered from this, too. Databases are just hard to back up.

Got it, had Nginx proxying on port 80 instead of 443. Not a big deal as it was on the back side, but it didn't like the headers.

That was going to be what I told you to check had I seen this sooner.

Did you look at one of my example config’s and see what was different because I also proxy this on port 80 on the backend.

I see no value in Guacamole, personally. No Machine is a much better option.

Doesn't deal with the web interface. NX requires a client. Guacamole is as much a front end to NX as it is to any other protocol.

I wonder how often you really need people with no technical expertise to connect remotely to a linux machine?

For example, I have users on Chromebooks that need remote Linux access. \

SSH or RDP. I agree with @IRJ, it (Guacamole) just seems like a hassle.

RDP is pretty cumbersome in some cases for that stuff. And does that mean no NX, or having to maintain multiple for each box?

I definitely find Guac worlds easier. For one thing, it maintains a list of available resources. So the access listing is centralized, rather than making people maintain it on desktops.

I've never found d RDP cumbersome. I'm not talking about using NX on a Chromebook. Anything that isn't a Chromebook, NX is easier. For the Chromebook people SSH is native RDP is easy.

This whole thread is around how Guacamole isn't easy. You also don't need this to have a centralized list. If you're using CM you're going to have a list of systems anyway.

      CM?

      Configuration management.

Okay, wasn't sure. Yes, pushing out NX configs shouldn't be too bad, in theory.

NoMachine finds all of the systems in a network. For example, if you're on ZT it will list all available clients on that network. I was saying if you just wanted a list for people to SSH/RDP to, you already have it.

What we want, ideally, is not to use something like ZT (although it's an option that we will kick around), and not to make a list for everyone. But to have a portal (or something like a portal) that lists all of the machines available specifically to the person in question. We have specific pools and assigned boxes. For example, Maggie has a dedicated machine just for her, I don't want to see it in my list. And she doesn't want to see mine. But we both want to see remote machines dedicated for something we share.
