Well, you could do that with nearly every piece of hardware (*). But Raspberry does one great thing: People get creative.

(*) just as an example, you could write a I2C driver for some external IC using your PC's serial / parallel port. Ok, nowadays one would need a USB-2-RS232 / USB-2-LPT, but you'll get the idea 😉

Yeah I remember that stuff. I was not in the IA16 and IA32 worlds in any significant way until I bought a Pentium 75 and then a P2 350. I was in the M68K world much more.

I just started to check out some solutions myself. I want to explore the UniFi video equipment from Ubiquiti for our offices. We have overhangs so figured 2 or 3 cameras at each location with spare desktop running linux for the vr portion.

this burned me last summer - Thought I had roaming data off - nope.. damn phone racked up $300 in charges.

      Ouch.

I don't use PP - but for the Linux day Office use, I have Pithos running. If I'm travelling alone, I run regular Pandora and haven't go over a few hundred MB in an 8hour drive.

A few hundred megs - well, that would have been like $1300 in charges for me... I think I downloaded about 105 MB for $300

      WTF? that's like $3 a MB.

That was common but we legislated against insane charges like that. Worked.... well enough.

$10/MB was very common before the CRTC slapped them around

You could also look at PlayOnLinux or Crossover.

PlayOnLinux works well for some games, but not for others. I haven't used Crossover in a long time, so I can't speak to how well that one works.

I think that efforts like what HPE and Dell have been doing to get very high density, very low cost ARM "blades" into the datacenter is where it is going to be. And that there will either be loads of hypervisor management used to push out workloads or something similar that does this for bare metal much like Ubuntu's MaaS (Metal as a Service) to get the ARM blades to act as much like VM hosts as possible.

There are lots of cool projects out there. What about some more pyrotechnics?

You have had a weird anti Apple vibe going the last couple days..

FTFY. They do have some good products, but they are way overpriced. More like a status symbol, if you know what I mean.

I second that. No reason to buy an overpriced item just because that's what the "cool kids" like.

In the last 2 years i have drank the Kool-aid. I don't fan girl, it is nice just being able to buy a technology, and it just works.

Compared to Win/Linux I have to give Apple credit for that

Yup, I'm the farthest thing from an Apple fan and I hate the OSX machines, but the iOS phones and tablets are so solid.

Slightly off topic, do you have issues with them keeping correct date/time?

Yes, we do. Have you seen the same thing?

      Yes 😠
Caused mayhem when groups of them would meet and no one could get on to the WiFi network.

When we figured out what the issue was, we implemented a time sync GPO for them.

A time sync GPO, aren't they already doing that with the PDCs emulator?

      Should be by default.
