@scottalanmiller Yea when I was in school they were phasing it out and you could only learn logo/turtle, by the time I was in high-school it wasn't offered.

When I was in school everyone was interested in it even though I went to country schools that didn't teach any programming. I went to tiny rural schools. My niece goes to a massive Texan school bigger than every county's school in every county that bordered my home county combined (like bigger than every school in six counties put together) and they have, by early high school, not one single kid who has ever learned to program! Not one. We went from one in two to less than one in ten thousand!!

What about all of these awesome new online places? The ones that promise to give you the skills to make that new ~whatever~ you want? Are those profit-driven just to give the bare minimum to design and debug phone apps?

Those are the worst. Those not only aren't worth the money but often put your resume on a blacklist. They are actively bad for your career rather than being passive like a normal degree. They've become sought after by hiring managers as a way to filter people out.

Hahaha that's actually quite funny, and sad for all of the people that wasted their time.

@scottalanmiller I think it's a little unfortunate, but it's a consumer market so I guess tablets it is. I guess with facebook/twits/tweets you don't really need much more than that for most people.

@scottalanmiller Now that you mention it I'm the only person I know with a home workstation.

You know that feeling you get when you feel old? I just had a similar one for geekiness.

This is really neat, i think I would much prefer this to Loggly.

Just because I'm paranoid of cloud for logs/security/internal-ops stuff.

      This is super interesting!

I was thinking nice at-home computers will be a thing of the past and eventually most things will be cloud based once fiber becomes more readily available. Since bandwidth will be cheaper than a nice tower for 80% of home users' needs. Thoughts?

    • RE: Not Sure How I Feel About This

I think exploitation is a human problem, not a national or geographical one and needs to be stopped at the UN level. Do I want basic human rights for people? Yes. Do I think supply chains will stop pinching pennies where it matters without top-down intervention? No.

Realistically, if we shut down FoxConn today what would happen?

I tend to agree Hubtech, I don't like to have everything running on my laptop/desktop unless I have no other options (which perhaps you don't).

I would normally do the same thing, but $$$ is the issue right now, and I have to make due with whatever I can get a hold of.

      /plug
@Bill-Kindle ServerMonkey has (new) i-series laptops well under $1k and barebones (refurb) servers start under $100 on our boneyard page, depending on what type of virtualization you're looking to do. If you wanted to work something out we're always looking for good word-of-mouth!

Wait, am I supposed to be the Playback Machine senior developer? If so, then yes, Kickstarter. Also, it should have all the features and do all the things. If not then, um, disregard this I guess. 🙂

Alright, let's get a kickstarter started then!!

I'm not sure where this is going, but I like it. Let me know where i can help!

As someone who's visited Dubai I think the "Retractable glass roof" part is a little much. Unless it's a safety feature, I mean if the a/c goes out it'll be an easy bake oven in 20 minutes.

      I went to Applebee's tonight.

I'm not a fan of their food, but their happy hour? Ridiculous.

Cowboy burger with smokey mayo instead of the BBQ sauce. You can thank me later.

I'll thank you now; I never liked their BBQ sauce so i think that might actually be enough to turn that frown upside down. (Technically speaking.)

      Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite

Those are super sweet for a home setup, great buy! I've heard you can do marvelous things on the CLI/Console with them.

They are very good gear for any business. They are not super sweet for a home setup outside of IT @ Home. They are definitely NOT good for general home users because the GUI is not simple enough. That is fine, because it is not the target market anyway.

To replace your $45 Linksys with Ubiquiti gear would cost you $160 for a router (EdgeMax Router LITE) and an access point (UniFi AP).

For IT at home, this is a very cost effective method of getting yourself business grade gear.

I agree, if I had more running at home i would definitely look into getting a Ubiquiti setup however I only have a few VPS and most of my testing is done in a virtual environment. Realistically I have a 0.5dsl connection so I need pinto-level routing (ATT oversells bandwidth in my area).
