I wonder if the discovery of this has anything to do with the bank robbers (the mainstream media called them hackers) that were finally caught after 12 years of stealth operation.

Good call, my gears are a'turnin' now.

      ...and prints phallic objects.

@thecreativeone91 I was thinking about some kind of SSL or encrypted system similar to encrypted printing; where all you can see is the end product. I assume that anyone with a 3D scanner could just scan the original piece to begin with.

I was going to promote an idea but it already exists. I might build a printer soon.

I wonder how long before someone makes a DRM based home use 3D printer that can be used for small items. You pay for a license to a model to print and it can print X number of them before the license expires.

I'm very happy that you mentioned that, this is something with DRM that I could get behind!

@scottalanmiller It takes some getting used to, hopefully you're getting some of this cold front over in Austin; actually having decent weather over here in Houston.

Lived in Texas for four years. Haven't been gone even a year yet. Should not have to adjust this much!!

I completely understand, when I went on the 2-week vacation to Vancouver/WA it was truly a shock after only being gone for a bit. Always a surprise, even for a native Texan.

@Dashrender I agree! I also think that the costs associated would be mutually beneficial for the OEM and customer. No warehousing and logistics costs for end of life products, and they can keep their drawings in-house if they can remotely send the drawings to the printer.

    • UPS = Pay-Per-Use 3D Printing?

I'm still looking for all of the details, but it looks UPS is going to offer 3D printing services now. Hopefully a few more shops pop up with commercial 3D printers; I keep having this nerdy fantasy where if something breaks the manufacturer could remotely 3D print the replacement part at a UPS and I can just go pick it up.

      A guy can dream!

@MattKing Yep, similar technology. The stove uses induction with an electromagnet with a moving field to generate heat though.

@thecreativeone91 Ahh, see I might not understand that directly, but it makes more sense in my head. Off to Wikipedia!

Part of me hopes this will take off like the "iOS 6 makes it waterproof" advertisement that went around Facebook. It'd be unfortunate, but...

@thecreativeone91 doesn't the microwave charging work, in layman's theory, like an induction stove but we're making small amounts of electricity not tons of heat?

    • Cloudflare kicking off "Keyless SSL".

Alright, not to spam the water-cooler today, but this is pretty neat!

Quote: Tomorrow, we'll publish a full post on the nitty, gritty techical details of how, what has come to be called Keyless SSL™, works. (Update: The post with the technical details is now online.) For now, I'll just tell you about what Sebastien had built. It was a dramatic demo. A simple agent ran on a Raspberry Pi. A web server, running on a remote server on CloudFlare's network, received HTTPS connections. When the Raspberry Pi was plugged in, the connections went through from a browser as they would normally. The lock appeared and the connection was secured, end-to-end. The minute the Raspberry Pi's power was disconnected, HTTPS access terminated.

      https://blog.cloudflare.com/announcing-keyless-ssl-all-the-benefits-of-cloudflare-without-having-to-turn-over-your-private-ssl-keys/

NOTE: There are still SSL keys involved, it's an interesting take on the "problem" though.

    • Doh! HomeDepot using AV from 2007...

Home Depot is facing claims it ignored security warnings from staff, who say prior to its loss of 56 million credit cards, it failed to update anti virus since 2007, did not consistently monitor its network for signs of attack, and failed to properly audit its eventually-hacked payment terminals.

      http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/09/22/home_depot_ignored_staff_warnings_of_security_fail_laundry_list/

EDIT: It gets better: "In 2012 Home Depot hired and promoted Ricky Joe Mitchell within its security ranks before he was in April sentenced to four years prison for performing a factory reset on his former employers' servers."

How about a bidding war? I'll do $50k remote from Houston. Signed, sealed, delivered. 😜

I'll match that! But from Dallas!

Haha you can have it, I'll stick to procurement; rather not throw away 7yrs of experience moving into an IT admin position in all reality.

EDIT: If you need a remote supply chain guy... 😛
