@ajstringham The email would work just fine. I was just talking about avoiding the monthly cost of those 30 addresses that will be growing as the company grows.

Wait, what are you using for those 30 emails now? are they hosting their own email server now? Rackspace can do a split (I think even on the same domain name) between Exchange accounts (`$4/month/user) and non Exchange for (~$2/month/user - I was told the price went up).

$10-$12 for Exchange. Always has been. No one is near the Office 365 $4 exchange price point today.

@scottalanmiller do you mean that a self hosted solution normally runs closer to $10-12/month/user? which is why O365 $4/m/u is so good?

I understand, but since we're not willing to pay for it it's kinda not an option. I know that the Sharepoint Essentials version is out there, but the last time I install it, I was completely confused.

You can share OneNote. SharePoint is a great place for sharing the OneNote files however 🙂

Funny how we keep coming back to Sharepoint lol

OK, I think part of my problem is that I'm using the Turnkey version of MediaWiki. I looked at the MediaWiki page yesterday and the editing tools are very different from the ones in the Turnkey version.

Since I'm a complete NOOB on Linux I was/am looking for something I could get up and running quickly, Turnkey fit the bill, but is starting to have some shortcomings.

I can attest to this, Scott is right, it's pretty common in hotels to see the foot washing station right next to the toilet. Seems weird to me to have a dedicated sink for your feet 😛 But when sandals are the norm....

@Bill-Kindle aww.. hadn't thought of the gyros so it would understand you want to go forward.. OK.. maybe... but still, not falling off when being shot 3+ feet? Definitely going to have to see it to believe it.

I can't believe it! the video looks fake. What are the chances that someone who was shot up 3+ feet in the air would remain stable enough not to fall off the first time they took off? Not to mention that waving your foot in the air to get more speed wouldn't work either.

    • RE: Replacing old phone system

@ajstringham I do understand that I only need one ethernet port at each desk to run both a phone and the computer (I'm doing that now in the second building that has VOIP phones already.

I want PoE because I don't want to use "phones are powered via AC plugs" as you put it - I said power bricks in my previous posts. More plugs under the desk just invite more problems (and add to the cost because most phones don't come with them) Since I have to have the cost anyway power brick or PoE switch, I'll take the switch if available.

Most phones come with a Cat5e cable so I wouldn't need anything there.

I did understand that Elastix does not have a licensing cost, it's just the phone cost itself.

Earlier when I mentioned that Asterisk was made by Digium ( I didn't say Elastix was made by Digium - should have said Mark Spencer of Digium) is that wrong? And a search I just did showed that Elastix is based on Asterisk and several other projects.

Let's pause on this conversation until I get a full phone count.

@ajstringham I definitely used swipe before my current keyboard Minuum. Check it out (though I don't think they have a free trial 😞 )

I'm still getting used to it, the spell check or maybe better said predictive nature of Minuum is much better than Swype, and it learns your typing pattern to offer the words your more likely to use.

    • RE: Replacing old phone system

      @ajstringham
This building was cabled long before I came along. Each station only has one ethernet drop. Plus about 1/3 of the drops are in places without a computer, so there is no pre existing cable to use.
What do you mean why PoE? Because I hate using power bricks, and am not fond of the idea of using power injectors (though I can't tell you why - it's just a personal thing, I suppose I could get over it).

Let's assume that building has 65 phones and you said that $150 was a bit high so will lowball it at $100 each - that's still $6500 in phones before I look at adding cabling and PoE switches.

But... now in writing that previous sentence... if I replaced all the phones, they can all connect to my current Inter-Tel 5000 so I could dump that expense and be over only the cost of cabling and the PoE switches. ... wait that thought won't work because phones for my current phone system cost $250+ ea ($125 for the phone and $125 for their IP license). So that ups my price on phones alone to $16,250.

    • RE: Do you find a tablet useful for work?

NO, I can't use a tablet for work. I suppose if I'm walking around all day (but I'm not) it might be more helpful. yeah I could RDC into my servers if needed, but I just don't need to that often.

mobile email is definitely nice, and I use my phone (Galaxy S4) for that. I don't like to type much on it, I use the voice to text when possible, otherwise I wait until I'm back at my desk, or grab a workstation around the office and log into webmail.

Those that are using their tablets all day - other than email, what are you doing on them? are you really creating documents from an iPad on a regular basis - I mean like Word and Excel type docs? Create quotes, etc? Perhaps you are because you have a great app that performs that function well on that device.

But for me, the tablet is only used as an ereader, and it does a fantastic job of that.

    • RE: Replacing old phone system

@ajstringham The presented solution is as follows:

Replace the Digital switch with an Inter-Tel 5000 (VOIP) switch.
Connect a VOIP to digital gateway appliance that all of the current digital phones will plug into and work as normal.
      Done.

We had a meeting with the vendor yesterday and the suggested that as digital phones die, we replace them with VOIP phones. I had to remind management that that would mean they would possibly need new wiring, and even if no new wiring, they would new POE/power injectors/power bricks for each VOIP phone put in. Frankly I was surprised I was told that was doable.
