The license restrictions, though, for content are by location of the viewer, not the nationality of the viewer.

And that's what's got to change. Ultimately, geographical restrictions are not compatible with the modern world and we need a new model.

I would suggest moving your office to the bedroom

Convenient for mid-afternoon naps as well.

Seriously, I spend 8 hours a night in my bedroom, I couldn't spend another 8 hours a day in there. It would be like being in prison.

I don't get to work from home, sadly. But if I did, I think I'd try and work in as many different locations as I could - the library, Starbucks, the garden shed, the beach....

    • RE: Embracing Subscription Licensing

Didn't have time to read the whole article, but I don't really see subscription as an IT issue. I see it as an issue for the finance guys. A bit like choosing whether to lease or buy a photocopier, I really don't care either way.

It's not like you've ever owned the software anyway. You only buy a licence to use the software.

LOL bloatware.. nice - I disagree, but nice..

It has pre-installed third party software that includes a "free" period of X number of days before becoming a paid-for subscription. Is that not a definition of bloatware?

This seems like both a very abnormal thing and a very good thing.

I don't think it's abnormal at all. If we really like a candidate but don't have a position we'll keep in touch, for sure. Finding a good candidate is tough, and expensive if you go through a recruiter, so a little effort to keep in touch can really pay dividend. The first thing we'll say when we have a position to fill, before we advertise or talk to recruiters, is "ok, so who do we know?"

This is a large part of what LinkedIn is for.

    • RE: Marketing Honesty

I generally try and avoid vendors meeting with managers or users here at work. Occasionally it happens though. I'm always amazed at how gullible some of them are. They come out of the meeting thinking some bit of software will be the answer to all their prayers, and when I try and give them a reality check they accuse me of just being a cynical, old man (which I am!).

The most obvious line I get from some vendor salesman in a shiny suit in reply to some question about a feature we require is "I'll have to double-check with technical, but I'm pretty sure it does that". That usually means "No! It definitely doesn't do that"

The ability to lie is a good skill to have as an IT professional (and as a boyfriend), though you have to know when and when not to use it.

    • RE: Feedback on Articles.

I see you've quoted @scottalanmiller on one of those articles.

I guess it's good for SEO, but other than that I'm not sure who reads these kinds of articles or how useful they are.

To take the article "10 Password Myths Debunked", well, the internet seems full of similar articles. But is the kind of person who actually believes some of your myths likely to be the kind of person who reads articles on IT company websites? It seems that the Venn diagram of these kind of people is going to minuscule.

I suspect you're just doing it for SEO, but if you're not, who exactly is your target market?

      Hope that helps 🙂

    • RE: Mobilegeddon: How Google is Changing Mobile Search Ranking

That's a good question and for me, the answer is probably yes. I say "probably" because I don't actually know exactly what Google has changed. I want Google to serve me with websites that are most relevant to my search, not to the device I'm searching on. I'm interested in content, not the way that content is presented. I will often view a website's PC site even on my phone, as it often contains more information and I couldn't give a shit what it looks like.

Search should primarily be about content, not design.

That said, if they are only prioritising pages within sites and not sites themselves, then maybe I'm ok with it.

    • RE: What Is a System Admin Worth?

Whilst the infographic is designed as a joke, it is bogus. You're not doing all those 13 jobs concurrently. So the correct calculation is to take an average. $843k divided by 13 is $64k. So that's what a System Admin is actually worth.

    • RE: SAMIT: Should You Provide Equipment for Work from Home Staff?

@scottalanmiller said in SAMIT: Should You Provide Equipment for Work from Home Staff?:

What do you do outside of MS and ERP? Why make your team broad, if the company doesn't consider doing anything outside of the immediate scope per your other description? It's interesting to be so focused yet have a broad idea of learning.

I work for an ISV, not a VAR, but I don't get hung up on descriptions - we're a software house basically. Microsoft's business applications are extremely broad - ERP, CRM, Power BI, Power Apps - it's as broad as you want to make it, no-one could become an expert in everything, you have to specialise to a degree.

But look, we're getting in ad hominem replies now. I don't see the relevance. I get that this is primarily a forum for US MSPs and I'm a European ERP specialist, but I'm just offering my perspective. But when it gets to the level of replies (IRJ, not you) that say I'm not really IT, or that I don't need any training because I can fall back on Microsoft, or I don't have the commitment of "real" IT people then it's getting pointless.

And it's depressing to hear an American think that Europeans don't have the right "mindset", have it easier, and don't unlock their full potential. I don't really have any interest in engaging with that level of ignorance of other countries.

      So I'll call it quits.

    • RE: What "I Need A New Job" Really Means..

I love this quote from Greg Smith:

"Sometimes, when you have been in an organisation a long time, it starts to feel like a student party in the small hours of the morning. All the decent booze has gone, all the interesting people have left or copped off and you suddenly realise that you should have gone home hours ago. At that point, you start to amplify your organisation’s faults and play down its good points; the exact opposite of what you did when you first arrived."

    • RE: Hiring/Inteviewing Advice

I think a good way to judge how expert someone is on a topic is to see how well they explain something to an idiot. For example, I have a reasonable understanding of storage concepts, but would struggle to explain it to someone because I'm not an expert. So I could possibly blag it when talking to an IT Pro, but would struggle to explain it to my 7 year old daughter. @scottalanmiller is an expert, and would probably make perfect sense to my daughter.

So in your case, getting the interviewee to explain some marketing concepts would give you a good indication of how good they are - even though you're not an expert. If you can understand them, they must be good.

In an interview I did recently with our HR Manager, I got the candidate to explain how Sharepoint could help the HR department. The key was that they had to explain it to someone who knew nothing about Sharepoint and wasn't an IT pro. So they had to break Sharepoint down into layman's terms - which is very hard unless you really understand what Sharepoint is all about.

My second go. I've probably screwed this up as well!

Proof, if any is needed, that the biggest threat to security is basic human error. All the software encryption in the world won't help if you're simply an idiot.
