    • Fiber Connection Termination Question

We have fiber under the street between our two buildings that connects them for networking.

Here is pics of the termination on each side:

      bldg2
      bldg2.jpg

Not that I really think I need it, but out of curiosity, if I were to get appropriate fiber connector for each end and insert into the same port on both sides is that all that would be needed to make another pair active?

    • RE: Unable to mark NAS location trusted in Office

@JaredBusch said in Unable to mark NAS location trusted in Office:

Customer has a bunch of Access files with macros.

Macros cannot be run because I cannot mark the shared folder as a trusted location.

File location: \\192.168.1.11\Data Mapped as k:\.

Going into Microsoft Trust center, I cannot mark the location as trusted with either syntax.

I have a similar issue with a 3rd party developed application that uses an access database. The only way I could find to workaround was to add the trusted location through a registry edit. Here is the notes I have on what I did

      3.	HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Access\Security\Trusted Locations\
      a.	From here add another Key called Location X where X can be any number (different for each trusted location to be added; so for example you could use Location 3; doesn’t really matter as long as it is unique)
      b.	Under that Key add the following values:
      i.	AllowNetworkLocations REG_DWORD = 1
      ii.	AllowSubFolders REG_DWORD = 1
iii.	Description REG_SZ (string) = “MS Access Trusted Location”
iv.	Path REG_SZ (string) = “C:\MSAccessTrustedLoc” (or whatever the path is to the trusted location.

In our case the version of access being used was 2007 and I have to install the access 2007 runtime on each machine that runs the application. That also is where the 12.0 comes from in the registry key path. That may be different if the access version is not 2007.

    • Skyetel Acquired ...

I saw a notice that Skyetel sent me that they had been acquired. I wasn't familiar with the company that acquired them which they named as HFA group which I had not heard of before. My google foo has not turned up any information on who these folks are.

Is anyone familiar with them? Is anyone using Skyetel concerned about the acquisition and what it's potential impact on Skyetel could be?

      Per the email

In the coming months, all of HFA’s products, services, and brands will be consolidated into Skyetel ...

Does anyone know what this may entail?

Our Sales Director asked me about getting digital business card. He had a customer that was using Blinq which he liked.

A few others that I found were HiHello, Linq and Tappy.

Has anyone used Blinq or others? What has your experience been with them?

    • How safe are images on docker hub ?

I'm new to docker and was going to do some experimenting. I thought I'd start by seeing if I could get a Unifi controller set up in a container on a test server. I found two different images on docker hub but as far as I can tell neither is provided by Unifi itself.

That got me to wondering how safe should I consider public images such as these? Before I start using these are there any best practices that I should consider for what to look for before running an image from an unknown source?

The two images I found for the unifi controller are these :

    • SIP Extension for Maintenance Staff in Noisy Environment

I'm wanting to improve the ability for our mtc staff to talk on phone with vendor(s) support while they are on a noisy plant floor. Our facility is in a cell deadspot. Coverage outside is spotty at best and once inside is essentially impossible to use.

Ideally what I would want is some effective noise cancelling headphones, probably with a boom mic that can either be a fully functioning SIP extension off of FreePBX or at least be connected to a device that is itself the extension.

Right now I'm thinking my best bet is to find something that can connect with WiFi and have Linphone installed on it for the extension. Then use something like this for the headphones

I have a yealink W56 for them now and that does have a standard audio jack so I could get a set of corded headphones, but I'm not excited about a corded solution since they could be using it near machinery with moving parts.

I just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar situation and what you may have done to address.

@scottalanmiller said in Centralized Log Management:

@braswelljay said in Centralized Log Management:

Does not collect server, application and network logs sufficiently to respond to and investigate a cybersecurity incident

This is not a bad thing. Collecting logs is good, centrally is best. But only if you have a team that can use them. If you had that, likely you'd already be doing this. So the question is... before doing this, do you have a team ready to leverage it? Or is this just a way to potentially spend more money with the "cyber security" guys because there's no better way to make money than getting paid to read logs.

No there is no team that would be able to leverage. This is a very good point and definitely something for us to keep in mind.

From your perspective is there any value in collecting them centrally so that if we were to be breached it might help other experts that we would almost certainly have to engage? That is even if we don't really have the inhouse expertise to use them effectively on a day to day basis, is it still worth keeping and protecting those logs in the event that they are needed due to an actual compromise of some kind?

    • Centralized Log Management

We recently had a cyber security audit performed and two of the findings were related to log retention. The specific findings on the audit were:

      • Does not collect server, application and network logs sufficiently to respond to and investigate a cybersecurity incident

      • Audit logs are not centrally stored and retained for at least a year

I was hoping to see what others might be doing to address these kind of issues. I've seen Graylog mentioned as a possible solution.

Any other tools that perform this that you might recommend we look into?

    • Ubiquiti Edgeswitch console cable ...

I have an edgeswitch that I have rendered unreachable. I was making some changes and can no longer reach the web config interface.

Will this usb to rj45 console cable work with the Ubiquiti edgeswitch? Does anyone have a recommendation on one to use?

    • What is this Win 10 Taskbar Icon ?

I have a new windows 10 machine that once I joined to our domain started reacting sluggish and slow. There is an icon on the taskbar that I don't recognize. When I hover over it a popup from the taskbar comes up and I get some moving dots as if it is searching for something but nothing ever displays. I can't find anything in the taskbar settings that seems to control enable/disable and if I right click I just get the regular taskbar settings options.

It is the icon on the left in this snippet :

    • What to ask for in a Cybersecurity Auditor ...

I've been asked to get a few quotes for a cyber security audit. Apparently the cyber insurance coverage that we've been carrying is going to require an audit prior to allowing us to renew the coverage when the current policy term expires later this year.

What are some things I should make sure to inquire about from perspective auditor vendors to make sure we cover as much bases as possible?

Any other tips or suggestions would also be appreciated.

      Thanks.

    • Ergonomic Keyboard

I have a user that is complaining of wrist pain due to typing and has asked for an ergonomic keyboard. I'm not against this and want to get her what she needs to prevent any long term issues.

Is there any difference other than aesthetics when shopping for an ergonomic keyboard? Anything I should pay attention to that may make one better than another?

I've seen and been aware of these of course, but never used one nor shopped for one before.

I did see this old thread : https://mangolassi.it/topic/4411/microsoft-sculpt-ergonomic-keyboard-for-business

@IRJ Would you still recommend this keyboard?

Has anyone used a good system for managing the look of email signatures?

We use o365 for email with a mix of users on the web app and the local outlook client install. We've had a standardized signature for a while now but it was just something we taught users how to do for themselves. The bosses are wanting to have a solution where it can be centrally managed now.

I found this from just googling but don't know if it is any good :

    • Formbuilder services for tablet / phone ...

Has anyone used one of the form builder type services where you can define a form for an onsite technician to complete while on site. We have a few field techs which visit some of our company farms to check on operations at these remote sites and right now we are still using the paper / clipboard approach for their site visit reports.

I had found the following which looked like they might be worth checking into but would be interested in checking out others if someone had a recommendation.

Exactly. I've purchased a few Taotuo cameras from Amazon (about all i could find) one was OK, the other was crap.

Good luck finding much of anything.

Ok. I didn't realize supply was still that tight. I thought it had loosened some. I'll see what I can find then and hope for the best.
