i agree - preaching to the choir
refurb would be more than adequate. why spend bucket loads of cash when you can spend a fraction for the (same) capability as the work load looks pretty darn minor.

What about refurbished UPS units? Have any folks here used them with success?

Definitely. Refurbed means that it has been fixed. Refurbed is often better than new because it has more testing. I can't really think of any business product I would not prefer refurbed all other factors being equal.

Refurb'd UPS are awesome savings if you can find some. Just make sure they got NEW batteries and not refurb'd / "tested" batteries.

What would be wrong with refurbed batteries?

@StrongBad unlike lead acid car batteries that can be somewhat refurbished UPS units use AGM (absorbent glass mat) or VRLA (valve regulated for (higher current) lead acid absorbent glass mat) which can not be refurbished much at all and should just be recycled after 3 years.

Can't they just replace those parts?

@StrongBad Nope, it's all sealed up together to prevent gas escaping (or control it's release)

Can they even call it refurbed then? That's just used.

@StrongBad Exactly! The UPS it's self can be used and refurb'd but the batteries must be new.

Here's an AGM battery that someone tried to take apart. (Don't try that at home!)
