@Kelly said in Docker for Mac and Windows public beta is out! No more VirtualBox!:

I don't think Docker is going to eliminate VirtualBox, but it is going to make canned trials more the norm. Being able to download and launch a containerized trial version of software will make this so much easier.

I agree, two different shoes to fill. Both have a useful place.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's the last day of the GOG summer sale 2016. Better hurry up 😉

I have totally exhausted their games list for this sale round 🙂 I managed to get way more than enough points for all of the freebie games, too.

Right, Dashrender, they do it so they dont have to pay for their own USAF IT people, or pay USAF IT people a wage worth working for. But at the same time, they pay so much money to these contractors are they actually saving money? Im not so sure, esp with the intangible costs like this situation right here.

No they are not, they can't be!

My brother made 20K in the military, got out became a private contractor doing the same job fro $120K.. WTF? Why aren't they just keeping military people and paying them say $60K or $80K.. whatever.

Not how it works for IT. I've worked for Lockheed, there are plenty of VERY low paying jobs there. Not all, of course, but lots.

Johnhooks has a great point, as long as it's managed correctly, this could be an awesome idea. Though logistically, I'm wondering how IPs get assigned and transported to the end user with not NATing.

Because you route. That is how IP works.

I am still at a lost about why we use the MLNews account. What purpose does it serve?

Same as news posting accounts on other communities. A means for a generic account for posting news items.

It would be less of a problem if Scott did better about not mixing up his tabs.

That's true. But I do keep them straight most of the time.

      Most of the time, yes.

The acronym SOS (Secure Open Source) really isn't the best one is it?

Save Our Souls.... many people who haven't the slightest clue might immediately think that open source is dangerous and that auditing is required because of "how insecure it must be".

I'm totally for it but I'm curious as to why they couldn't come up with a better name / acronym.

What if we picked on other arbitrary artefacts of travel like being able to use the bathroom while moving or being allowed to sleep? We don't normally point out how restrictive cars are today for lacking these things, but as a long distance driver I can assure you that they are very limiting. I often choose things that you consider "non free" or "movement restricted" because they give me "more freedom".. freedom to go places that I can't drive due to needing sleep or wanting to eat or use the bathroom. Trains allow this.

Which restricts movement more? Kids can take trains. So can drunks. So can the elderly or disabled. Trains provide a lot of freedoms that cars do not. Neither is free or not free. They are just different. But both allow you to go wherever you want, just in different ways.

@scottalanmiller said in Is a Mid Career Sabbatical a Good Idea:

And how many tiny companies with only one staffer do "projects" at all? And how many of them? I know a lot of SMBs and year or longer delays because of management alone is not uncommon.

But again... how long would these delays be if you quit?

I agree the projects, that I tossed on the pile aren't that many/big, but they wouldn't be zero over the life of the tech, sure may be years between.

But even the day to day stuff, can't print, can't get on the network, my mouse is dead, etc.

Most companies with a single IT person will have a MSP as their backup, which is our case.

Right.. and doesn't all that sound like a year off once or twice a decade wouldn't have much of any impact? Especially when you consider that you'd be fresh and ready to go when you return? And maybe they'd be ready to make decisions faster?

The rubber banding effect might seriously absorb the whole thing!
