Anyone know of a way in which I can run the Windows RSAT tools from my non domain joined W10 PC?

I go from client to client and I'm hoping to be able to run the Windows admin tools from my PC.

Or anyone know of an alternate program that may work?

That is totally not how any of that works.

About the only thing that I can think of is to simply right click and run as.

But you also will run into the problem that RSAT tools are different on ever system

Nah, that'll only run the app as whoever on the local PC, it doesn't parse auth credentials to the external entity.

This works "runas /netonly /user:domain\username "mmc dsa.msc /server=REMOTEDC" but you have to run it from a cmd/powershell box & wait for the password prompt. It's also fiddly if you want to work in different apps that reside within different domains.

That's the beauty of security. Some outsider can't just come in to someone's network with their own hardware and successfully connect from all the RSAT tools.

Isnt that what PAW is for?

      What is PAW?

I've been battling with VPN on Windows 10 ever since the latter came out. And if you do a quick google search, you'll find thousands with all kind of VPN issues on 10. Here's the only thing that worked so far, and I only discovered it yesterday.

In registry, find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PolicyAgent, then add AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule DWORD key, and change value to 2 and reboot.

      Yes, that from here:
      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/926179/how-to-configure-an-l2tp-ipsec-server-behind-a-nat-t-device-in-windows

I had been holding off on doing this as I was under the impression that it was an issue elsewhere.

      I'll give that a go and see what happens ... ..... .... .... ...

      No, that didn't help.

Off to moan to the telco.

It would be very odd for a conversation in real life to stay confined to one very specific topic or idea, why does everyone assume that an online forum would be any different from real life discussions?

Because real life is not text based. 😉

You apparently don't live in my world. Everything I can feasibly convert to it is text based!

@dafyre I didn't ever get back to needing this until now. How were you able to achieve this? I use Fedora 28 and the Cinnamon desktop.

Sadly, no, I haven't. From what I can tell, Fedora 28 (probably 29 too) use Wayland by default. I haven't found a way to get it working yet. I tried switching the Login Screen to use X first, but even that didn't help.

Have you tried disabling Wayland instead?

I hadn't thought about that. I'll have to do a fresh install and see how that's done, unless there's a working VNC Server package in Fedora 29...

Just edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf and uncomment WaylandEnable=false and then restart. You will have only two options GNOME and GNOME Classic.

That gets me one step closer. I can get XRDP to connect to the local VNC server, but the user has to log in (locally) first... :face_with_cold_sweat:

As unhelpful as it it... "mine works fine"

If you attempt a boot without the ISO, do you get the "insert boot media..." message?
Have you run a checksum comparison on the ISO file?

No & no to that mate.

I thought all was OK, but alas, no. It installs OK, but when it reboots post install it just hangs and never gets to the GUI.
I've downloaded another ISO, so I'll give that a go.
It is helpful to know that it does work, I must just have to iron out some bugs on my system.

My workflow got too heavy, and I didn't have just one solution for note taking, so I ended up in a whirlwhind of chaos. I dropped back to purely pencil and paper for now, but I'm also looking to jump back into digital once I get my method down.

I plan on going with either Freedcamp or Asana for tasks, and I'm not sure yet for notes. OneNote is frowned on a bit here due to FIPS compliance, and I'm sure Evernote would be the same. Makes me think that even Freedcamp and Asana would fall into that category as well, which is part of the reason I'm taking my time finding a solution.

I'm no expert but ... Asana from when I played with it is for team and task sharing, it is good though, I enjoyed it. I looked at alot of Kanban tools as well about 18 months back, one of them stood out more than others, but like alot of things it comes down to what you can work with.

I find Keep is very helpful as it searches through the text of the note. So if I add a note or a bookmark and I can only remember 1 word in that note or bookmark I can search for that instead of trying to remember what tag I may have used.

Keep actually has a limit on tags, it's not much, may be only 100 or 150 or something, I ran out of tags quickly.

I think the trick with Keep may be don't try to find anything in it, use Search.

Did you install THIS inside of your Windows VM?

I changed my 'Display' setting from Spice to VNC, that gave me 2 mouse cursors. Then I added a Tablet, that got rid of the extra cursor and everything now seems to work OK.

No, I wouldn't have been able to install anything into the VM before the changes mentioned above as the mouse was unusable.

I'll do it now and see what happens.

I also built a VM using Boxes. That was going OK, but now I've lost video all together.

I don't like or ever use boxes.

      How come?

I tried it once. It was not very elegant. Using KVM was far superior. No idea why Boxes is even being promoted, it seems like a hokey solution to a problem that no one has.

Boxes suppose to be user-friendly for those use to using those type 2 hypervisor UI.

I don't think it is, though. KVM already makes it "feel" like a traditional type 2, Boxes only takes away from that experience.

I was more confused using Boxes UI compared to Virtual Machine Manager.

Oh yeah, I tried it and could not figure out what was going on.

Visit spice space and install the guest tools in your VM.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that's outside my area of competance ATM.

      https://www.spice-space.org/download/windows/spice-guest-tools/spice-guest-tools-latest.exe

I had another look at this last night.
I've installed, sorry if this sounds a little confused, I'm not a Linux user, KVM/QEMU onto my Fedora laptop and managed to install a copy of Server 2016 as a VM. Only problem is I cannot get the mouse & keyboard to switch from physical to virtual hosts, it's a real mess, very very frustrating, so frustrating in fact I nuked Fedora & installed Ubuntu. But that's as far as I got last night.
I'm going to try my luck with Virtualbox on Ubuntu.

What is it with Fedora anyway? Seems like a darn fiddly thing to use.

Did you install the spice driver into the windows instance? If not, of course nothing works.

No mate I didn't, I wasn't sure what to do and it was getting late so I just changed plans. This entire thing is about learning new bits and pieces, so there's no grief with any of it.

Thanks everyone for all the help so far.

Depends on the type of VPN and if you are tunneling all traffic or not. Do you have more info?

I'm playing around with this n that trying to gain some knowledge, it's just a lab environment.

What I was thinking of doing was running up an Azure Windows VM, setting up a VPN connection to that from my 2016 VPS and seeing if I can add the Azure VM as a second DC to the domain I have on my VPS.

I've read this can be done, but I don't know if once the VPN connection is in place whether I will be able to RDP back into my 2016 VPS?

you might able to do so if the VPN doesn't take the route of your other network. Worst case scenario you just disconnect the user from the VPN and you are right back in it.

Thanks for advice. I guess as this is a knowledge building exercise, best way to find out is to just do it and see.

      Definitely.
