Saw Streets of Fire in the theater last night. The writer Larry Gross was there and chatted with us for a bit. Mentioned Final Fight as a video game that was heavily influenced by the movie and he claimed not to have heard of it previously. That was pretty cool!

@coliver Yeah that is certainly larger than most. Generally lucky if people are looking at more than a few dozen participants in some of these reports that come out.

Have not looked at this particular study but these types of food/health studies are notorious for small sample sizes and poor methodology.

Anything claiming to tell about the amazing health benefits of XYZ food item is pretty much to be ignored with extreme prejudice.

If you are still looking I just made my room reservation and it ended up being a room with 2 queen beds. I could probably be convinced to share.

Where does MS say that it is legal to buy an OEM copy of Windows IF you buy a broken stick of Ram with it as well? Stop inventing nonsense about Europe being able to evade US contract law. It's basic knowledge that an OEM edition of Windows is not tied to anything except for the motherboard of the system in which it was supplied. So...how can you buy a faulty ram stick and be "legal" under their OEM agreement?

The whole thing was very shaky from the beginning when MS demanded that people only sell the license with hardware. They gave people a bunch of crap about selling licenses with broken stuff. They gave people crap about selling with a singe piece of working hardware. Mostly it was self enforced because MS are scary.

This comes down to they wanted their product supported. They weren't willing to provide the support at the OEM price point. Trying to tie a piece of hardware to the license(MS really wanted a full system here) gave them leverage to make someone else provide the end user support.

And since selling MS software required a license under contract, it is trivial for them to require it. I'm so lost as to how this is confusing. It's been common knowledge, even for bench and prosumers, for a very long time. At least since the XP era.

I'm not a lawyer and certainly not an IP or contract law specialist but I would bet that doesn't hold up.

MS may have made assertions in that direction but I suspect there are not any court decisions on the topic that would uphold such a claim. Requiring a contract from a product originator is not typically allowed in US law. I know that for physical items similar assertions have mostly failed. For software the situation is somewhat less clear but general opinion seems to lean toward the same. Software vendors sure wish it was easier to enforce things like this though.

    • RE: Cable Management - Methods to the Madness and what happens when you need to replace

Stacked and cabled some reasonably dense cabinets way back when but nothing like the stuff in those pictures.

Cables got the shit labeled straight out of them. Everything was pretty clear and easy to trace but the company I worked for used the plastic ties. One cable replacement would have ruined all the work that went into making a cabinet pretty.

There is little law involved here. MS said it was the rule. They may have had signed contracts with large distributors that had the stipulation and that would have had some civil court clout as far as penalties for breaking contract etc. But once it was in the hands of smaller distributors/shops there would have been little reason to adhere to this other than Microsoft's reputation as a bully.

@wirestyle22 Enjoying it so far! The writing, acting, production are all quite solid. Adhering to the text in many things but making some departures. A character that gets one scene in the book has become an ongoing thing.

The scenes that feature violence are largely in cartoon mode which some might find off putting. There are buckets of blood being sloshed around. A guy gets kicked in the junk and his skull/spine fly out.

There's only one scene so far that I really found to be off-putting. Looking forward to the rest!

    • RE: Toilets of the World

While the major push in that time period may have been led by feminist groups it is by no means an issue of just equality of the sexes.

Public sanitation and class inequality are also seriously entwined in this sort of issue.

Allowing people to shit with some modicum of dignity and keeping waste contained have some serious public value.

I'm really surprised there aren't more board games on steam although I've heard good things about http://store.steampowered.com/app/369990/Gremlins_Inc/

Been a while since I looked into it last but iOS was definitely the go to for software conversions of board games. Don't know that there is a ton of stuff but almost certainly more than on other platforms.

Yeah, sadly. I have a few on my Nvidia Shield, but not as many as I would like. Steam would be perfect for those, and does have a few.

I should note that my earlier comment is regarding more polished individual products pointed at the masses.

There are some really cool things out there like vassalengine.org which support playing a wide variety of games. Might require some time spent with the system to figure out how things work though.

    • RE: Visio 2016 Installation Error

Microsoft still recommends 32bit for cross app and plugin compatibility reasons. I'm not sure I've encountered a situation where that actually ended up being important though. At least not in the last few years.

Is that really true today? What's the advantage to the lower version?

      Compatibility with other applications.

Is that true across the board? Everything I run tends to be 64bit. I've not run 32bit Office in a long time, what would it be incompatible with?

Probably goofy internally built nonsense, addons from small developers who don't update often or at all etc. Nothing I've run into has been a problem though. At least not since the 2010 days. Maybe not even then.

Not sure if this will help since we can't see what sort of error you are getting but...

Office doesn't always uninstall cleanly and may screw up future attempts.

Try using the removal tools here

Then reboot the machine and start up a new installation once things are cleared out.
