    • RE: Approached by a MSP

I was just given an offer from this MSP for a Project Manager position. Not as much money as I want but more than what I'm making plus extra stuff to sweeten the deal. Benefits are a touch better but a bit more expensive.

I'm going to take the holidays to think about it but it seems like a pretty easy decision even though I feel bad jumping before the merger is complete.

Notice was given and they tried to get me to stay at least until the merger date and even tossed money at me. Rather than take the risk of loosing this job opportunity I decided to say no. They were understanding and admitted that they are just being greedy and had to try and keep me. So there it is. I start on Jan 18th as a PM for an MSP. Let the fun begin!

2nd interview for the PM position is in the works of being scheduled. 🙂

My current boss and I have a great relationship so I did inform him that I've got some nibbles happening and will probably need to get some time off to see what happens. He totally understands and is also frustrated with how little communication there has been with the new people. I also fully trust him that he isn't going to spill the beans to them.

I'm currently trying to concentrate on work but having issues.... My boss died in his sleep Saturday night at 50 years old. I can only guess but it had to have been a massive heart attack. I've only been here for a month so I haven't really had a chance to really know him but he enjoyed whiskey so we talked about that at length. He seemed like a great guy and a fair boss from what everyone at the company ever told me about him. It's strange to try and just go through the day "business as usual" knowing that there is this elephant in the room but nobody really wants to talk about it quite yet.

My current boss just told me to hold off on getting drunk and dancing on the tables... at least until my 90 day review is done. LOL!

So... I was invited to the new jobs annual party tonight but I don't start working there until next Monday. I think it's pretty awesome to be invited before I even start... It's like they really like me!

I got my SW PMs down to a fewer than 20, which means that they fit on a single page now. And all of the ones that are left are ones that I need to maintain for reference reasons (they have information in them that I don't want to lose.) Nothing more requiring follow up and now I can, I hope, keep on top of new ones as they come.

I had the impression that using email as a place to store important or reference information was a bad idea..

I say that,.. but I find that I still do so. There are over 4,460 emails in my Gmail account....

15,938 in my personal gmail account...

A paltry 3,328 in my work email. 😮

I'm at 29,314 in my primary Gmail account... 137 in my work (but I just started here 2 weeks ago).

About to leave work early due to the impending over-hyped snow storm. Schools were closed 24 hrs before the storm was scheduled to hit. At least it's an excuse for a half day today and I can also be late tomorrow. 🙂

    • Approached by a MSP

So I had a great conversation with someone at an MSP and they told me that I would be a great fit in their team if I was interested. I've never worked for an MSP but I know a lot of you are a MSP or have worked for one before so I wonder if you guys can shed some light on how it all works. The pay was explained to me and I like that it is a salary with some incentive to do as much billable hours as you can. It's a decent sized company so I'm sure the benefits are average. My real concern is how do you deal with all the training to stay current and how do you keep every customers system details straight. LOL! Another thing would be do you know of any specific questions I should ask them or red flags I need to look for when interviewing with them because I'm sure it has to be a little different from a regular job interview.

Well just to follow instructions I will post here and introduce myself... My name is Tony and I like long walks on the beach, a beautiful hot sunny day cooking on the grill, a good "legal aged" Scotch, and making bad decisions because they make the best stories.

    • RE: NTG HQ Offline

      @MattSpeller said:

Supposing that NTG's internet is powered by 1HAMP (1 hamster power), what would you need to run it 24x7 with any degree of reliability?

      To begin, some definitions:

RAIHAM 1 - Two wheels, with a hamster each.
RAIHAM 0 - Single wheel, two hamsters
RAIHAM 10 - Two wheels, two hamsters each

Given the below data sets, we see hamsters run an average of 4 hours per day
      http://stats.stackexchange.com/questions/114305/analysis-of-hamster-wheel-rotational-data

As hamsters are nocturnal and primarily active at night, you will need to have at least 6 RAIHAM's setup on separate light/dark schedules.

      Assumptions:

      • Hamsters are fed and cared for
      • Hamsters will run together on the wheel

NTG's hamsternet will require 12 RAIHAM 10's setup into 6 banks of 4 hour offset groups to achieve even close to 99% uptime.

NTG's hamsternet will house 48 hamsters, who will run on average 192 miles every 24 hours.

Well then... I'd say you need to get a hobby but it looks like you already got one.

    • RE: Recommended IT Dashboard?

FAN is just a linux server with Nagios, Centreon, and Nagvis installed so you could add in whatever other package you need I would guess as long as its all compatible. Nagvis is where I designed my dashboards and I'm sure it can pull info from anywhere. FAN is just a precompiled collection of software that is supposed to be easy to set up.
