All of these here will be in the same boat

      https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/cat/Signature-Edition-PCs/categoryID.69916600

I feel that this is an unfair generalization. If this is the case, then it's MS that's replacing the BIOS/UEFI in the laptops with something that locks them to MS OSs. At which point this would be all MS's fault, not Lenovo's.

No they aren't replacing it. Companies need to make money, Microsoft offers this porgram to make money. It's not bad for most non-power users (home users) makes microsoft money. So it's not hurting most people. And Lenovo, HP, MSI, ASUS etc all are part of the program to make money. It's Microsoft requirements.

Anyone ever had microsoft void all your keys, give new ones and force all your products to deactivate so you can re-activate with more current numbers? it's the dumbest thing ever. we found out this morning, and shortly after all MS products crying that they are not genuine.

We just got through with an Audit we passed 4 months ago so it doesn't make any sense to me.

Helping someone with this one. I got the VPN Tunnels up. I can ping the local IP address of the router/VPN box on both ends. However I can not ping anything else on the lan. Both ends firewalls are set to allow any.

Pricing really hasn't changed that much. Just the licensing has. If you were licensing properly before with up to 4 CPUs and 8 Cores the costs will not go up.

At what size network do you normally turn on BGP?

Pretty much any time you have multiple routers & subnets. BGP is to routing what DHCP is to Up addressing (kinda). With static routes every device has to be setup manually with every network which is insane. With BGP and Autonomous system numbers it's automated and less likely to have mistakes.

It really bends you mind when you think of an 8 processor chassis.
In this case you would need 4 licenses to just be allowed to run two VMs, you would need 8 licenses to run four VMs, etc.

      Like an HPE Integrity.

Cloud@Cost was running 8 CPU servers with VMware and windows I believe. All legally licensed I'm sure.

They had no Windows. You couldn't even get Windows from them. You had to supply your own and had to license the entire cloud for a single VM that you might want to run.

They had it.. just not licensed haha.

    • Nexus 6P issues

So does anyone have any ideas when the BLE (bluetooth Low energy) will be fixed on Nexus 6P with Android N? It kinda sucks cause all our vending machines at work use it for payment.

and Cisco Jabber is still broken on the Nexus 6P still does it on Android 7: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=197579#makechanges

Cisco Jabber MEH, would be nice. But the BLE is very important to me..

Don't know anything about the RDP role, but can you retrieve and alter settings using PowerShell? Most major Microsoft services feature an PowerShell interface today.

You can. Almost all of the RDS services except session host can even run on a box without a GUI.

I would agree the Office 365 is expensive as most people use it in a package that includes access to the desktop clients.

Same here we just use Exchange online cause office isn't upgraded often enough for it to make finance sense for us right now, even with an EA.

That being said there are plenty of alternative's to exchange that are just as good.

for what cost though? G Suite is $5/user/month for the base plan.

Unless you want to host in house using open source (not recommended) or use something free like Zoho email (up to 25 users, 5GB per user) your aren't going to find it cheaper.

That's what I read about opening DOC and XLS files in OpenOffice 7 years ago yet the visual output was nearly useless requiring massive formatting updates.

No it's not what you read. Doc and XLS was never an open standard. It was a closed specification. The OpenXML formats were designed from the ground up to be open.

There was some other tool mentioned a year or so ago that is basically fail2ban for windows. I meant to set it up and something made me forget.. back to looking at this stuff.

RDPGuard is the one a lot of people use, but a non-admin can even modify that one.. and I like scripts.

The script uses logon auditing. I'm not sure if owa makes an event log for failed audits but if it does it will work. There is another script that is suppose to work for other stuff. I'll have to find it again.

    • RE: Show me the $PowerShell.

I wrote this powershell script. It quries LMTools (used by autodesk, Tekla and may others for network seats.) Checks if all the seats (X) are in use, and if so sends an email with a list of all the computers with it open (we send it to supervisors, incase people are complaining about not being able to use it they know who's not really using it and can tell them to close it). It writes a text file when it's true, so on the next run it does not send an email again if the condition is still true. One it has been false it will delete the txt file and can then send an email again. I schedule it as a task every 30min. with the text file check in their it prevents them from getting an email every 30min. They only get an email when the full usage first happens each instance.

#This Script Queries LMTools and Sends and Email with usage when full
      #Written by Jason
#X Should be Equal to Total Number of Seats

      $Email = cd "C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\"
      $Lmtools = .\lmutil.exe lmstat -f [LicesneNumber]
      $Body = $Lmtools -replace ",","`n"
      If (($Lmtools -like '*Total of X licenses in use*') -and (!(Test-Path -Path C:\Scripts\Autodesk.txt -PathType Leaf))){$MailBody= $Body + $Email.mail
      $MailSubject= "Autodesk License Full"
      $SmtpClient = New-Object system.net.mail.smtpClient
      $SmtpClient.host = "SMTP Relay"
      $MailMessage = New-Object system.net.mail.mailmessage
      $MailMessage.from = "[email protected]"
      $MailMessage.To.add("[email protected]")
      $MailMessage.IsBodyHtml = 0
      $MailMessage.Subject = $MailSubject
      $MailMessage.Body = $MailBody

OneDrive etc as a back the problem comes with malware, randsomeware and accidental deletion.

For a backup you really want it disconnected from the system and read only.
