You don't have to... but that is going to be a limiting factor in a number of ways. Especially when you are looking at management or want to expand your infrastructure.

I did not in this case. I knew that epel was required but not included and put it in the instructions. Wget I tested to ensure it was there by default, but it appears that Digital Ocean is modifying that too!! That's really frustrating. Well, we had a discussion here (not even going to try and find the thread) about a year or so ago when I was setting something up and I mentioned this then. Mostly related to how DO was not a clean Minimal install.

That's only an artifact of SMBs on Windows. I've worked with tons of SMBs on Linux and never see update issues outside of old consultants trying to screw them by creating artificial migration needs. It takes effort to have these problems in the Linux world. Just being lazy, you are pretty likely to stay patched.

Going to have a play once the VL has been added.

Can take up to twenty minutes, I have noticed. Probably has to get the image out to their content delivery network.
