    • RE: What Are You Doing Right Now

Our ISP's "solutions consultant" just came through the door and didn't even know we were already a customer... She looked over at the reception desk and saw a Yealink phone and said "you must be on our managed services plan.." um no...

Anyway, she said something about making sure we're registered with "NENA" (or something that sounds similar anyway) for e911? I've never heard of it, had to try multiple searches to even find something related to 911... She claimed it's like $250 for a business to register and absolutely necessary. Anybody heard of such a thing?

    • RE: New laptop recommendation - Mom compatible

@wrx7m The WD15 (USB Type-C) has been decent, but there's a huge shift in how it operates compared to the docks of old. First off, I had to change a couple BIOS settings to get it to work at all. Then when you hit the power button, you have to look at the lights on the laptop to even tell if it's on, then like 10 seconds later the monitors turn on and you can finally see Windows loading. I'm assuming that the downtime is because the drivers aren't loaded yet? Then the other weird thing is that the dock installs it's own ethernet adapter, completely separate from the one on the laptop itself, with its own MAC address. I ended up having to set a static IP on that interface because it wouldn't pull and keep a reservation I made for it for some reason, it would intermittently drop connections and then pull from the DHCP pool (we have a messed up process, don't ask lol). Other than those couple of things, it's been good.

Ah, you're talking about reads, I can get 90Mb/s on my super old DS213j with 2 spinners copying a single large file, writing to an older laptop with a 7200rpm drive. 15 definitely seems slow.

I stream from Plex. And if I really wanted to put it on iOS devices, I can since I have Plexpass.

Am I right in assuming your own media is hosted on a Plex server. If so, where do you host your Plex server?

I do the same thing. I have an older HP server in my basement that I use for it, and other things.

I've been debating moving all of my storage to Wasabi and spinning up a couple VPS. I figure I could about break even saving the power costs of my older server, and be on WAY faster hardware in the process.

    • RE: Remote Control Software

Don't forget about the Screen Connect remote access packages if you don't need the other support options. Install agents on all machines and have unlimited access to them.

    • RE: Linux users with iPhones / iPads

If you only want to host music, you could probably get away with a $2.50 instance on Vultr with 50 GB of free block storage. Of course that's depending on the size of your library. Wasabi could be super cheap also.

    • RE: Remote Control Software

@wrx7m Right, an agent is the SC software installed on each machine, which varies per plan. $300 = 25 Agents, $600 = 100 Agents, etc. I believe you can have unlimited technicians with any of these pay per agent plans. I could totally be wrong though...

If I go the route of Plex, I suppose I could just load what I want on the iPhone / iPad for offline listening, and not have to deal with streaming over the Internet.

You could just run the plex server on your daily driver and only fire it up when you want to change the offline content on your devices if you aren't planning on streaming the content.

      So YES.

Sounds like a post-it note on the monitor is the correct solution here

Doesn't Apple have any apps in their store that can play audio files (not in itunes)?
Don't they have file transfer apps in the app store?
Can't you transfer whatever files you want over usb to the iphone with an adapter?

No, No, and No. That would make way too much sense.

This could be an awesome solution for her. Setup an incoming RSS email address, anything from sender X gets added to the RSS feed.

      Maybe coupled with https://www.open-tickr.net/

    • XO behind proxy or exposed directly?

I’ve recently switched my home lab back to XS/XO because, well, KVM just wasn’t working out like I wanted it to.

I want to access XO over the web, among other websites in my home lab. Would it be best to setup an NGINX proxy for this or expose XO directly to the web?

There is a guide in the XO documentation on setting up https... but I’m feeling like this is best handled via reverse proxy.

I've never even used VMware, but I'm pretty sure if every single feature was available for free (like all the other hypervisors), then I'm pretty sure that's a no-brainer.

It looks like he was recording a monitor from his NVR or something, you can see a timestamp in the top left corner moving around.
