The default port for DSM for HTTP is 5000 but for HTTPS it's 5001. Could that be the issue you're having?

I'm wondering if the source and destination is backwards that they configured. I had to fix a rsync issue coming from (different port) translated to 22.

Oh my gosh, that script is HUGE. I'm not a software developer, but I'll see if I can read through it and put it to practice.

      Thanks,

If you go heads down you might be able to do it by Christmas.

    • Office 365 PowerShell question

While in an Office 365 PowerShell session, anyone know what the 'name' value refers to? I think what a client did was simply rename an account when someone quit, and here is the result.

Amanda quits, backfilled by Jane. Display name, UPN, SAM, alias, everything shows as Jane, except 'name'. Going through Exchange mailbox and MSO user properties via the GUI, no trace of the word 'Amanda' anywhere.

Anyone know what that value actually refers to? Before today I thought it was probably UPN, until today I saw there is a separate value for UPN.

    • RE: Microsoft support - downhill?

@scottalanmiller said in Microsoft support - downhill?:

This we hear a lot. Bad communications, unable to speak English, lots of passing the buck and run around, and then delay after delay presumably to push you to find an alternative to them actually doing something.

It's gone way downhill in the past year. Even our channel reps have been pretty shocked. The lack of English has been an issue for some time (obviously not the only company outsourcing though). I don't mind someone having an accent, but there have been many times over this year during those support calls where I have to request someone else because I can't even pick up on the context of what they're trying to say; I couldn't string together even a few words.

Oh, and that's after getting bounced around by the technical support router for about an hour.

@irj said in Microsoft support - downhill?:

Maybe I am an anomaly here, but I have contacted Microsoft support twice and I thought it was excellent! Yes, I got an Indian tech and manager each time, but they helped resolve my issues and one issue went on for a week and was well outside the scope of MS support call. The tech I worked with on this case went above and beyond and helped me configure a third party tool to achieve my goal even though it was out of Microsoft's responsibility.

It's an anomaly. Win some, lose some.

    • Server procurement process: HP vs. Dell

      (more of a rant)

We're a Dell and HPE partner, and I have to say the buying process has been pushing me more toward Dell. This is geared toward the manufacturer's site, rather than resellers.

Dell's process: Find your starting point, customize what you need, and send the URL to your partner. The URL has all of the config in it, which is convenient. I also value the hard requirements on the customization, such as not being able to add dual SD micro SD cards in the build, without choosing a combo reader (wouldn't want to have to go back and individually order a part you forgot when the system arrived).

HPE's process: You can do one of two things, assuming you need to actually customize it (99% of the time, I do), rather than just use the pre-built offerings on the site which are normally very incomplete for the needs. You can either download a PDF that has all the parts for that server. This can be tough to find, so you may as well use a search engine such as Google to do a Quick Sheet search for the model you're thinking. Once you find the link you're looking for, and there is a PDF with all the available part numbers, you can start collecting (don't miss anything!). Collect all your part numbers, send it off to your partner, and begin going back and forth on an email string about questions from the partner about anything additional/conflicts/etc. Your second option is reach out with "I need this much memory, this amount of drives, a controller that has this much cache, these kinds of drives, these NICs", etc. Worth noting... HP (HP Inc) is a reseller for their other half, HP Enterprise.

I like to procure different manufactures throughout the year to see if things have become more convenient with one, better navigation, different useful features added/etc. But holy shit has HPE become more difficult to procure.

SAN appliances are another nightmare. Call for anything and everything. Do I have an hour to talk on the phone about something I could spec out in 5 minutes? No.

Edit: Please feel free to offer any advice on spec'ing servers/storage out through both vendors if I am missing something (spoke with our procurement and HP yesterday, so I don't believe I'm missing anything). Again, I'm not comparing HPE/Dell's sites to going through a reseller/partner since we are a partner.

Is there a dump file or just this application that is failing?

I tried using a couple programs that would capture a dump file. Never could get them working. I've disabled some Windows features on RD/CA stuff that were unnecessary, and backups are now completing without error. I'll report back if they keep going well through the weekend.

@bbigford said in Why is the Third World Running Windows?:

Why are they running outdated versions of Windows rather than something free... I have no idea on that.

Well, if you have a market where essentially no one knows what an OS is, or how to install one.... it's rather a leap to think that they could reasonably update. In the US everyone knows how to install an OS or their nephew does. But in much of the world, that would be an expensive, rare resource that you have no idea needs to be sought out.

Sorry, I meant to add I get that Windows carries an expense and not everyone can honestly afford to run it up to date. What I meant is if they need a platform and the end user computing device is irrelevant for that access, they could run their favorite distro of Linux and have it both fully up to date and carry no cost.

$149 is considered a good deal?

Similar basic devices from places like Meraki/Cisco/Polycom are much higher than that. $149 is decent... Considering it's basically just a tablet with a handset, I can see the prices potentially coming down even further over time. Strap a $10 handset on a $50 Amazon Fire tablet and boom, Ubiquiti phone.

    • Synology-Storage Manager less than File Station

Running the latest DSM. The appliance is just a backup destination. One single volume, no LUNs, no apps doing replication or using something like Cloud Station. Pretty simple device overall.Storage Manager shows used space is 4TB, but 2 folders in File Station add up to 9TB.

      Any idea how that's possible?

I was actually just talking about this with some coworkers of mine.

If you ever work with any other system, then work with Windows, it's shocking how silly and ridiculous it is. You can't "see" anything. It's like they wanted to mock people for choosing the GUI.

I love how you frequently go to this - they must want to mock people..

I'm sure it rarely if ever actually starts there. As already said - it was legacy, and never updated. They are finally getting around to updating most of the control panel applets - but we're still frequently stuck dealing with the old style for things like the java security admin, etc.

But wouldn't that be hilarious if it were true?

Internal MS plot to fuck with people: "Haha these idiots buying our operating system for the GUI... you know what would REALLY be funny? Release management tools that they can't see, so they have to squint their eyes and get really close to the screen. Their eyesight will get worse and they'll look even older while doing it with that stupid look on their face. HAH!!"

Let me tell you, we had been loving MongoDB, but this makes me feel SO much better deciding to move to ScyllaDB recently.

I'll have to take a look into ScyllaDB. Obviously, it's not a 1-to-1 replacement for MongoDB, and maybe that's a great thing. Got any pros/cons while I'm doing some research on it?

    • RE: Getting Started with IT Certifications

Good article. I hear a lot of folks tout about how they need to get the A+ to get started... without understanding what EXACTLY what the A+ is, or the material consists of. CCNA/MCSA/etc being specific paths, I was really curious as to what good alternatives outside of CompTIA were. I'm curious as I've taken the first approach, getting certified where I NEED to be certified, and going down those linear paths. Or, at least, being taken down a path because it is required for growth, rather than going down it because I feel like it is going to be "the best route" for advancement. All in all, I don't get certified before I need to be (on specific certs like VCP-DCV) because the place I'm applying to might not even recognize it (like having a VCP but the company is all Hyper-V... like the place I'm at now, having come from a big VMware environment previously).
