They've been hear since the early 2000's.

Broadly? Like in any major retailer they were there with Netgear, LInksys, D-Link and Belkin?

Don't know. But their 5 port switches used to be better quality than the others available for SOHO back then. Now days not so much.

I would never spend a penny on a TP-Link. Worthless garbage. Been saddled with one in Spain and it was hell. Spend the extra $2 to get serious gear.

Ouch, really? I have deployed a bunch of them.

Also, we have a bunch of TrendNET switches here that work well for us. Completely unmanaged of course.

Don't know about TrendNet. But definitely not stuff I would be too likely to look at. What's making you use that kind of stuff?

TP-Link is the super, ultra cheap Chinese stuff sold to third world consumers. I've never seen someone buy it in the US before.

TrendNet is pretty google as far as NIC and wireless. Never tried their switches or any networking gear but for SOHO I'd be willing to take a bet that they are fine.

TrendNet I feel that I've been seeing for longer. Five or six years at least I've seen them pushing ads. But haven't gotten to use them anywhere.

Are you guys really seeing these deployed in homes and businesses?

Yes, but it was a few years ago.

You keep changing what I've said to something different.

No, I have not changed anything you said. You are simply wrong.

I've stated that they weren't broadly available. I've said I've never seen them in homes or business. I've said that I've known who they were for about a year. These are all true facts.

They have been broadly available and a common purchase for years. Just because you have not seen them in your limited view does not mean that the rest of us have also not seen them.

You can say I have no expose. You can say my experience is bad or pointless. You can say that being in the field is more important than other types of work. That's all fine opinion. But don't act like you are disputing what I've said, because you are stating things that are not in opposition to what I've said.

Yes, I am. You are choosing not to interpret it that way and will attempt to word me to death so that I will give up the conversation.

I'm shocked that people are deploying these and that you feel that they are super common and apparently that they've been everywhere and common for seven years. I've literally never seen one out of the box in the US (other than the one I bought that was just an adapter from Amazon) ever.

Again you are stating that they are not common because YOU have not seen one. This is anecdotal. This is not proof either if you want to be that way about it..

I've seen them places and just don't remember, is that what you are saying?

So your exposure is so incredibly broad, extensive and definitive that not only is my anecdotal experience so worthless that it shouldn't be mentioned, but even its existence is wrong?

What makes your anecdotal experience so authoritative? I didn't state that they didn't exist, only that I had not seen them. But from your anecdotal experience they are common. Why does your experience definitely make them common and mine definitely mean nothing?

Why does you doing the same thing not equal anecdotal but mine makes me wrong and has no value?

I will happily accept that anecdotal evidence of seeing them "all the time" is more likely to be meaningful than anecdotal of "never having seen one." If one person saw crickets all the time and another person never saw one, it doesn't suggest that there are no crickets but only that crickets are possibly localized.

My experience is mostly limited, on site that is, to NY, Texas, Pennsylvania and South Carolina in any broad sense. And NY which is my broadest experience tends to have different products or the potential for that compared to most US markets (many alcoholic drinks common in the US aren't legal in NY for example.)

But it is still valuable and both cases are anecdotal.

As more people say that they have seen them for years, I'm more and more surprised that I've never even seen them in a store - which I go to I assume as often as anyone else. But if they are really just everywhere, I'm just shocked. I wonder why I continue to never encounter one (in the US.)

I found a pretty cool command to monitor ports on an EdgeMax switch with Wireshark. You will need plink, which you can download from Putty's website.

                          plink -l username -pw password [EdgeMax Address] sudo /usr/sbin/tcpdump -i eth0 -w - not port 22 | "c:\Program Files\Wireshark\Wireshark.exe" -k -i -

Where [EdgeMax Address] is the IP address or name of your EdgeMax router.

Awesome. I'm seriously hoping that I can get one over the summer.

I ordered the 5 port model on Friday - plan to put it side by side with the SonicWall, test it out and migrate everything off the SonicWall.

Time to dig the manuals out on how to setup VOIP through it.
