Two weeks left for those trying to go from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The Free Upgrade depends on the OS being current, remember.

Do you think those people who have not upgraded by the 14th will be UNABLE to install and activate from their Windows 7 or 8.1 key?

Notice how I didn't ask about any licensing issues. I already know that answer. 🙂

Likely the ability to upgrade won't change, if there was time/date detection, we'd already have heard about it.

Interesting, I didn't know Windows 8 has many features, but I don't think I can consider install Windows 8 in a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with 3 GB RAM.

You should not consider ANY old OS, really ever. Outside of learning what support used to look like, which is effectively worthless, conceptually using an old OS is a bad idea. Windows 8, especially, is only one generation newer than Windows 7 which is already crazy old. Windows 8 is something like eleven versions old already!

My answer to the OP. I mean I am not saying MS is good or bad, or Linux OS's are good or bad. But the OP was just a whiny bitch.

I've seen a lot of people complaining that there have so many small patches break things that this will cause support problems for them.

I should pull the local repair shop owners in here, you'd never hear the end of it.

Ha! Yeah, why do patch updates only seem to affect consumers and SMBs?

@scottalanmiller said in Updating Windows from the Command Line:

Keeping a system up to date is very important and doing so from the command line can be one of the easiest ways to do this on Windows.

Updating a Windows system, server or desktop, can be as simple as running this command as an administrator:

      wuauclt.exe /detectnow /updatenow

If you only want to look for the latest updates without applying them, you can just run:

      wuauclt.exe /detectnow

      Also:
      wuauclt.exe /a /detectnow

      (/ResetAuthorization)

Well looks like I might actually have to go over there. I tried to switch users and it looks like it's stuck or something. TeamViewer is hung on a cannot display error. Suck.

Never seen that with SC, just saying 😉

Well I normally use NoMachine and connect to the ZT network I set up for them. But somehow she screwed that up as well. So this was a last ditch effort to get something working.

I'm confused - You're using folder redirection, so the local copy of the data is only there for speed or network connectivity loss. So there should be nearly zero data loss if you delete the profile after the user logs out.

I'm not sure if there is a reg key on Windows Workstation OS, but there definitely is on Server OS for Remote Desktop Services.

This was something I've seen often turned on to keep the local storage needs of the RDS server from ballooning out of control from left over profiles.

User logs into RDS, downloads profile, user logs out - copy is pushed to the server and local directory is deleted.

      Pretty standard practice.

I'd be surprised if this wasn't available on say Windows 7, etc.

No - User accounts are 'left' so that is connection to the AD / DC is lost, then the user can still log on.

That's not totally true, all profiles files are left, that doesn't mean you can still login to it necessarily. There's no process for AD to talk to the local computer to tell it the user was removed. It is just a directory service, The local computer has to request to login to the account. There is no method AD to tell computers anything changed without them requesting.

@Jason They can't connect to the domain network, they're force onto the guest network. As we required any devices that want to join the domain network, they must already be in the domain.

Additionally, they need to authenticate via RADIUS.

The guest network is vlan'd off.
