Yes I do, but I create 2 new folders there, iso and vm.

Why dont you separe that a little, and have more fun. Block device I assume DAS, if no why dont you make the storage reliable and robust, and make it its own server, like another fedora or centos install, with RAID 10 and the simplest option to share is NFS, and this way you can have many KVMs and the migration feature will actually work, and you can do RAID on just /var, and you scan scale easily with KVM nodes + KVM nodes can be state file, think salt stack, and you can treat them as pure compute nodes.

Because @EddieJennings is talking about his home lab, which will consist of a single 1U server. That hadn't been mentioned in this thread.

What I decided on was giving enough space to / live comfortably, and gave everything else to /var.

Also we could achieve hyperconvergence "the other way" (unlike having a global shared filesystem like Gluster or Ceph) but use fine grained replication (per VM/VM disk). That's really interesting (data locality, tiering, thin pro etc.). Obviously, we'll collaborate to see how to integrate this in our stack 🙂

First of all, as previously mentioned in the thread, the IPOD scenario is absolutely atrocious no matter how you look at it. You pay more to get more hardware to manage to get lower resiliency. I'll bring it back around and say that now that I've gotten past the couple of annoying obstacles with Hyper-V and remote management, Hyper-V is freaking awesome. It seems lightning fast.

The annoying thing for me is the versioning needed to manage hyper-v. Example: For Hyper-V 2016 you need a windows 10 machine to manage it.

You can pay for stuff to manage it, but I mean it doesn't automatically allow that

I just did that at my last job and it didn't allow it

I used Hyper-V 2016 with Win7 RSAT before I loaded Win10.

But you can't go wrong with doing it that way.

If you have no need for an extra NIC you could do a 3-NIC team. If you are fine with no management NIC, do a 4-port team and share it with your management OS if for some reason you need that many NICs in a team. Though you probably don't.

Yeah well it is for some low-risk servers, so, kinda almost testing, but not really, if that makes sense. lol

That looks nightmareish for something that should be quite simple.

oVirt is super simple. They have a live boot ISO ready to go to install.

I dont think it is super simple at all, if you ask me it is big mess. Only usable in big IT corp.

What's difficult about it? In using it, it was just "install and bam, it worked". An SMB would find it far easier than the competition, from what I've used.

Are they trying to get another partner to deploy/manage it? This would likely breach the EULA on the hosting program as it prevented co-marketing/white label stuff like this the last time I read it.

Microsoft thinks it can offer vSphere as a service without joining the VMware Cloud Provider Program (This will likely be met with legal).

Azure is known to run on custom hardware servers. Unless they've got DL380's or something certified this will not be supported.

With this upcoming project of virtualizing our production stuff, I've been thinking through the appropriate use of checkpoints. I'm sure there are other articles on this, but this seemed to be a good read.

My grand idea is that checkpoints would be used before installing Windows updates or some upgrade to an application. You take the checkpoint, apply the update, and if everything breaks, you apply the checkpoint. If nothing breaks, then you delete the checkpoint.

I'm curious how this would be handled with a SQL Server VM or Redis VM. You'd update your VM, transactions start happening, then things break causing you to have to apply the checkpoint. Any transactions that were done would be lost, which upon further thinking probably doesn't matter, since you probably couldn't trust any data put into the database while the stuff was in the process of breaking.

You have to make sure you don’t have transactions coming in. Simple as that. Anything is a headache waiting to happen.

Makes sense. When I do maintenance on these normally, I stop IIS once downtime’s been announced, then do my work. So I’d just take the checkpoints at that point. I imagine once stuffs back up and I confirm things aren’t broken, Hyper-V just handles merging the avhdx file in such a way that SQL Server, etc is none the wiser. Or is there significant risk of stuff breaking if it’s running while that merge process takes place?

No real risk. Just performance loss.

And never enought to matter to any SMB workload I have ever had to deal with.
