I see the use case for these in databases and almost solely there (until they get cheap.) We would need to know a lot about their performance, longevity, reliability, durability, cost, etc. before we could speculate much. Seven times faster is a big deal, that means that things like FusionIO are going to have to rethink what they are doing. And the SATA and SAS bottlenecks would be useless and we'd be forced onto direct PCIe or faster for any hope of getting the speed out of these things. But changes there have been coming regardless because already are drives are bottlenecked by the connection technologies.

If these end up the same price as current flash SSDs but are seven times faster and all other things are equal, that's amazing and we will switch right over and the flash drive is dead. But I suspect that there are many factors that we have yet to discover. And, right now, it's just a long off dream. We will have to see if they really bring these to market.

By and large, though, systems like file servers and application servers are no longer bottlenecked at the datastore layer but on the network, so I would not see most workloads having a reason to upgrade, yet.

It is not uncommon to only have servers approved to access the storage listed. So many shops will go in and add a server one by one to enable access. If your servers almost never change, this works pretty well and is extremely secure. You can do this in the firewall too, for even more security. But if you are using DevOps and creating and destroying VMs regularly you will want to automate this in some fashion.

Never heard of ownCloud but tried watching some of the features videos

      https://owncloud.org/features/

and whoever made them sounds like a 14 year old boy going through puberty. Just can't keep watching.

At the core, ownCloud is basically a self hosted DropBox.

I use it at multiple clients and use it personally.

Hmmm guess I'll have to try it out. I like the idea of staying off the grid with my files. What's your beef against having your own hosted email server?

It's the all in one that he doesn't like. Same basic reasoning as to why Windows SBS was so horrible.

Eh? I though you, @scottalanmiller didn't like self hosted email because it is often way to expensive for someone to host themselves compared to what they get service wise going with something like Rackspace ($1 Spiceworks price, $2 normal people price + $1/user for activesync, or $4 for O365 email only).

That's correct. What makes you say that as if I said something contrary?

Only that you mentioned the "it's the all in one that he doesn't like" when talking about email being added to Owncloud.

That may be one person's desire, but it seems more pressing to push on the issue of almost never self hosting email if possible.

Maybe, but that wasnt what I was answering 🙂

      oh, what did I miss?

I was answering why he didn't like having the email on the same server as other, non-email items.

If you are trying to use Veeam, the standard setup would to have a server running a second copy of Veeam B&R at the target site. You'll link the two and configure the replicas. You do not need to purchase a second Veeam license to do this, but you will need a running B&R at the DR site.

That was my understanding of how it works, but it has been almost two years since I talked to Veeam about it.

With what I've seen with v9, you now can do full failover scripted ahead of time to make it a bit more turn-key during a disaster.

I usually just power off the server, yank all the drives out, mix em all up and put em back in. I also enjoy testing my backups quite often.

I'll have to try your method next time!

BTW: I reached out to Cameron at Kingston about this, just to get a manufacturer's opinion. (I also invited him to join the forum as Kingston has been very helpful with demos and stuff.) Same as what the experts here have said. 🙂

      He said:
TRIM is not as critical today as it was several years ago. The SSD controllers now do a good job at garbage collection which is effectively trying to accomplish the same thing by trying to keep the invalid data areas empty for new writes to come in efficiently. We've studied the performance affects of TRIM in our labs here at Kingston and have found that most reputable SSD manufacturers today are making SSD's that perform well whether TRIM is enabled or not on the operating system.

TRIM support is definitely necessary from a marketing standpoint but less necessary from a technical stand point at this point in time.

@LAH3385 might be good to start a thread and try to determine what your needs are before going down the path of technology. By the time you were asking this question, you were already in pretty deep assuming certain products, product categories and platform HA. We should start with a business needs analysis, use that to set goals and then use the goals to select technology approaches.
