Also, the macOS version of Office 2016 is near completely feature consistent with the Windows version.

And macOS is a `Nix derivative.

I "think" that they use native libraries there (Cocoa) so that it's a port that would have to be replicated to go to native on Linux. Maybe now that 2016 is out they will just get the JavaScript version on Mac OSX and be on parity right away and be ready for Linux, too. That's another big piece of this puzzle, going to web apps is going to allow MS to now just remove the cost of making and maintaining the Mac version, but get the Linux version for free, and stop the cost of making the secondary online version. All three current versions plus the future Linux version will collapse into one. That's a massive cost savings.

@Breffni-Potter said in Windows 10 Anniversary Edition May Delete Partitions!:

Apple trash Windows and Linux installs on OSx frequently,

I have high-lighted the bit you quoted in bold. How is this a problem exclusive to Windows if OSX can and has broken installs as well?

Also I'm sure Linux installs can break the Windows partition as well, through carelessness or a bad bit of software installed, you can break that storage. We don't know how or why this happened exactly with Windows 10 but I'm willing to bet some kind of cleanup script was run at the end of the install which for reasons unknown, decided to terminate this partition. We don't know why but it's rubbish to say Windows is the only OS in history to have done this in the specific scenario of having more than 1 OS installed on the same storage.

      @scottalanmiller said

That the most common use case that Windows fails during is caused by dual booting intention doesn't change the fact that the issue is not exclusive to dual booting scenarios.

Where are they saying that on the article though?

Where did I say that Windows was the only OS in history to misbehave and kill storage? And I don't see how OSX being less than ready for prime time (something very evident to me from having tried to use it) excuses Windows from being stable?

I understand, Linux is great and everything else is crap. Linux definitely tends to take data integrity much more seriously than Windows. But why does this need to be about who is better or worse? This is about Windows having a data integrity issue right now that people need to look out for and be aware of and they should not be mislead to think that it is anything except a Windows data integrity issue - it is not reliably handling its own partition table.

The XX concurent users only comes into play if the licensed application offers such a thing. In the case of something like Office 2013, you'd definitely need 300 license...

But for Something like... Raiser's Edge, or a Student Information System... You'd only need to license for the expected number of concurrent users.

IE: Raiser's Edge can be installed on every computer on my campus... But only 15 of us can log in at one time.

My major concern about using Microsoft software is not about the quality or the price. It's about managing all the licensing, which really is a PITA and nearly impossible to overcome for just a one or two men show.

I am often amazed to find SMBs unwilling to consider the licensing overhead aspects of software choices. It can represent a massive cost. When people talk about the "hidden" costs of open source, they normally mention things that are equal with closed source, but they universally overlook licensing which is the only unique cost between the two and often one of the largest.

"You git what you pay fer" - Every anti-Open Source salesman. Every once in a while I still hear that from regular IT people who shouldn't be in IT. It used to happen more often, about 15 years ago I used to constantly hear "Linux? You get what you pay for!" and of course quotes from Robert Heinlein novels about neoliberals on the Moon.

I heard this from financial VPs at a company I used to work for. Even when I would give a list of open source products that we used.

that's when you come to NTG and ask us to "sell" any open source product that you need, at 20% above the cost of whatever closed source product you are looking at instead. Problem solved.

Haha, oddly enough I did exactly that. Worked like a charm!

Once "highest price means best deal" happens, all logic is out the window and some weird things happen.

I use a variety of boot tools to check hardware (mostly all found on HBCD). Definitely not going to sign them on every incoming PC. I usually just disable SB. 🙂

This is a personal choice - how secure do you want your environment to be? Hiren could definitely sign his CDs and make them compliant with Secure Boot, I'm guessing he just doesn't have people requesting it, and doesn't see the value to cost as worthwhile.

      Just start here.

Then read about how pointless it really is.

I mean, it can't be that bad, right? You can't need a different signing key for every kernel and kernel module! Try again.

Yeah, with the latest Asus no-more-boot thanks to a windows update bug, not even Microsoft can stay compliant with their own system.

I could go on and on with reference pages.

@scottalanmiller said in Azure Outage... Again:

The loss of knowledge of concrete was such a big deal that until the mid 1700s, we had gone over a thousand years without any idea of how concrete was made. So Rome was making concrete builds for hundreds of years longer than we've known about concrete in modern times.

That means that for well over a millennium... humans had to look upon the structures of the Roman Empire and say... that's so neat, what the heck is that material that they used?

It's interesting what history lost. Archimedes made steam engines 2000 years before we figured it out as well but it was useless at the time because slave labor was so cheap.

The only reason why some empires f.e. Russia did exist so long (and keeps existing BTW).

I think they pulled IPv6 support awhile back. All my Pertino devices are IPv4. Also, note that I have problems with builds 520+ when installing it on Windows DCs/DNS servers. The DNS records do not dynamically update when Pertino is installed. 510 works OK, though. I have a custom 529 build that support gave me that is basically 510 but enables some more verbose logging so they can find out what is going on.
