That is a shame but sadly for startups it does happen. It the last 1990s I worked for a startup which was to have product in Circuit City and Best Buy.

Sadly the (x) Manager took the paper orders and had the Production of said orders before the final commit from CC or BB.

That paper order for about 50,000 units at a tune of about $8 Million coffined the company. Business, production and finance models were a tad different then - They sold all the stock sub-production cost just to empty the warehouse of it.

Maybe Jolla will be able to recover, and indeed turn things around.

When you are talking about Ubuntu, you're talking about admins using it.. not home users. As such the lack of new things making would never be acceptable to home users - they are constantly looking for new things.. and if they can't find it in the normal store.. they will go elsewhere if it's possible at all.

I've never met those home users. What things are they looking for? I rarely see home users install anything but malware. All they use are web browsers.

I thought the Zero had no connectors, you had to soder on anything you wanted to connect

It only has 2 micro USB for data and power, and a micro sd card slot.

Right, but then they don't update it? How can you have enough resources to create an application and then not enough to update it with the platform it's built on?

Why waste money updating something if your customers don't leave you anyway? That's not good business.

I hate your logic sometimes 😉

@scottalanmiller I agree on @Dashrender with this one, production stuff should be on production gear unless it's a really tiny job

Well we pretty much know the size, if it runs in a VM on a Type 2, it's not big. And if we are just talking about some math, what's the purpose of production gear?

My dad used to do linear algebra for Eastman Kodak. He could use the mainframe when needed, but mostly they just bought him a high end laptop and let him take it home. Meant he could do his math modeling anywhere, anytime. Was much more flexible. Unless he had a rush job, no reason to tie up the mainframe.

using letsencrypt right now on my home server, btw. Have a cron job set up to update the cert every month or so, with an easy tool: ACME. Simpler than the 'standard' tool from Lets Encrypt, if you ask me. Go check it out at https://github.com/hlandau/acme 😉

I had a good laugh when I spotted the ".travis Try to speed up travis" Apparently I'm slowing things down, tho I do agree that speeding me up would be a good thing 😛

Though the courts often find that a company choosing not to perform a recall because paying out the lawsuits from deaths will cost less than the recall - how do you account for that in a business? Roulette wheel? lol

Sort of. It's generally a call for the lawyers to make. The business side figures out the cost of a recall, the lawyers figure out the cost of the lawsuit.

However, we are talking security, NOT safety. A company is ALWAYS allowed to protect lives and obey the law, neither of those must be compromised for profits.

There are always fringe cases. but most of my users are not such cases.

My users either. Sadly two of those boxes are on premise still. One is Exchange 2007 and the other is Exchange 2010 and OWA sucks there.

I circle the O365 question back to the people involved every few months.

On premise at customer sites? Yeah mine too, and I'll be upgrading to Exchange 2016 very soon to give the better OWA experience before we move to O365.
