@scottalanmiller While I think the scope of the request is a bit broad and has privacy concerns for other people not related to those arrested. I do not believe that there is an issue with the government trying to see if the people that were arrested did go to that website and did plan. It changes what charges and what sentencing can be rendered so it is pertinent to the case. I believe it should be a more narrow request than what it was.

Right, a narrow, appropriate request would be for the court case. This is not what a warrant related to the court case would look like.

I also know though you always ask for the moon and then settle for what you really want.

If they get the chance to do that. And you don't ask for the moon when it makes it into a court case exposing your department for corruption and an attack on the American people and the appearance of attempting to stifle free speech in order to promote a political agenda.

Um, I don't know how I really feel about it. Reiser was mediocre file system to begin with, XFS was much better in every possible use case, and still is. If anything, they should rename the damn thing, having a name after murderer is never a good thing.

ReiserFS was really great at handling massive numbers of tiny files. That was its strong suit. It was good enough that Suse used it by default.

They actually got security camera footage of a government official shoving an employee.

Harder to beat up and intimidate a mounted camera in the corner.

@irj said in UK To Fine Some Service Agencies if Found with Inadequate Security:

Most of the time it is just cheaper to pay the fine rather than practice good security. I recently read about a health organization that had a million records compromised. They were fined $3.5 million, so about $3.50 a record. Alot of companies figure it is better to just take the chance and even if you do get hacked it is still cost less than having a good security program.

That's often the case. Same thing with credit cards. Cheaper to pay for bad transactions than to pay for better security in the cards.

Yeah. These companies get rewarded for not having security. Just because you have terrible security, doesnt mean you will get breached either. How many are flying under the radar that we don't know about?

No the bigger question is, how many have been breached that they aren't aware of it, and the effects are low enough that it's not tripping any alarms?

Any good breach will be that way - no one knows except that data is out there, somewhere.

More importantly why does it fucking matter. It was written so long ago and there has been plenty of time and evidence that what was written down was complete bullshit.

Except they new it was BS in 2003, too.

Maybe a white-hat will "hack" in and patch it... why not?

Because... better things to do 🙂 And it still gets you arrested, so not worth the risk.

Yeah - Steve Gibson claimed that he went to the FBI and asked about making a virus that would find Code Red machines and patch them. He was told no, it's illegal.

Just showing why you should not listen to him. He actually asked that? How out of touch is he?

He claims to have friends there - so yes I'm sure he asked someone, did he officially ask? who knows.

Still pretty silly. I have cop friends, I don't ask them if kicking down the neighbour's front door is legal. The issue is not that he has access to the FBI, but that he has to ask the FBI about things so basic. Is this is first day working in IT?

He's NEVER worked in IT. Steve Gibson is the ultimate bench tech type person, very large blinders on very basic things.

Seems like a pretty run of the mill bench tech then. Good ones are still good.

Perhaps the better way to put it is more in-depth than most people take the time to do. Still not someone I'd take any advice IT wise from.

All those people are going to die too, but they may not have had as many life affirming, visceral experiences.

You're right that everyone is going to die.

But what matters, A LOT, is how you spend your last living 10-20+ years.

Do you want to be bedridden or otherwise unable to live comfortably last 20 years of your life?

People are generally living longer now due to medicine. This means if you are in bad condition at 60... well then good luck for your next 30 years!

You'll be wishing you cared more when you were 40 or 50. It's never too late to start caring, of course, until it's actually too late.

I'm 43, eat/drink/smoke what I want, enjoy life, and have never felt better. Lemmy said it best... "I don't want to live forever". Being old is horrible no matter how healthy your habits, and I definitely don't want to get that old, whatever age that may be. Once the quality has gone out of your life, there's zero reason to let modern medicine keep you alive a couple more decades, that's just insane.

It's better to burn out than it is to rust...

Looks likely that the deprecation is politically, rather than technologically, motivated.

I would say commercial. They always try to avoid nih so they are stronger in knowledge and can sell support more easily

I would only agree here if they were not developing their own in house product. This is very much like the Xen / KVM situation a decade ago.

sorry bad wording of mine. I meant that they always try to not sell NIH stuff because having an internal product always gives them more knowledge an therefore competitive advantage at consultancy level. No one is more expert in a product then the author of the product.

My view of RH has always been the same: If they can escalade in a community and have employees inside a community with relevant contributions they can reach adequate knowledge, but if someone else is better positioned in the community, they tend to lag knowledge and very often switch on another product.

I've seen this as an explanation for Xen/KVM, now this seems the same with FS, and other times they did the same.

This is not bad or good it is just the market. That's understandable to me.
