You could probably take away Major Project section and make that a bullet point under a role.

Also I like to list my skills under each role. It's any easy place to list your skills without using bulletpoints

But the biggest benefit is getting to move to Dallas!

While that would be a bonus for me, I have a fiance and new mother in law that it wouldn't go over well with ๐Ÿ˜•

@scottalanmiller Thanks! I'm doing some job searching right now on my computer, and now I have a completely different mentality on choosing which ones to apply for.

One a small shop, the number of resumes is small. Not many people apply to work at one person shops. Especially these days. Even larger shops with full IT teams often get nearly zero applications for IT work these days. You have to go seek applicants, they rarely come to you.

You assume they using good job descriptions and revealing the company size

Oh, you are assuming a situation where they are posting to job boards. I see, that makes sense. Although I can tell you that even when doing so, you get almost nothing as a smaller shop.

@PhlipElder i do agree there are some areas where MS is clear front runner like Office 365, but as far as infrastructure all major CSPs offer same services. It's on the SaaS side where there are some differences

Why is most of the world against R2F? It seems like Europe, Middle East, and Asia all have laws against it? Not sure about the Americas outside of the US.

A lot of the world are still driven by lots of low paid task worker jobs that are relatively speaking easy to replace.

      https://thenicholson.com/thinking-taking-offer-need-know/

Here is my 50+ point list of Questions and compensation related issues.

Some stuff is straight forward: but start with immortal words of Wutang Finance.
      CASH
      RULES
      EVERYTHING
      AROUND
      ME
      EXCEPT
      WHEN
      OTHER
      ASSET
      CLASSES
      PROVIDE
      HIGHER
      RISK
      ADJUSTED
      YIELDS

What I mean by this is cash is 100% solid comp, but other benefits (RSUs, 401K match, ESPP ) should be adjusted and factored in.

      Some stuff is situational:
Support for โ€œIn plan post tax 401K to Rothโ€ conversions may not strike your fancy, but Iโ€™m going to dodge a boat load of taxes over the years using this โ€One trick several senators hate!โ€.

Management is more empathy than anything.

      Ug...

Sorry, not getting a management job... but the job of actually managing.

Oh, no, I understood you - This is something I constantly fail at. empathy for others.
I just expect more from people...

Sometimes empathy makes you expect more, not less ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'm not sure if you're throwing platitudes at me?

IT Admin / Software Developer seems most accurate. What are you engineering in IT? Are you software engineering or developing?

In IT, I engineer production and test environments. I do administration if there is something that has to get escalated to me.

Software developer would probably be more accurate. Some projects I am mostly just a developer, on others I participate in the engineering.

It kind of sounds like DevOps more than IT admin

I got the impression that it was discrete roles. Writing code under one hat, doing IT under another.

That was my impression as well.

And that is true, for the most part.

@Kelly said in Figuring out what you want to do professionally:

How I think my peers are doing (social media syndrom

This one is tough because we tend to associate a lot of people as peers, and to some degree are correct. But, for example...

If you feel as a Linux Admin that a Windows Admin is a peer, you will likely always have one person that feels that they are "behind" on PowerShell and object scripting, and one that always feels that they are "behind" on text processing. But really, it's because they aren't direct peers. Sure, they are equals, but they aren't doing the exact same job.

Exactly why I refer to this as the Social Media syndrome. "Based on my perception of myself in relation to this narrow slice of what I see of you (not allowing for any context), I am not as good as you." Even two Windows Admins will not have the same sets of responsibilities and scope within their job. IT (and many other jobs) is full of "oughts". I ought to do more automation. I ought to have a <type> plan. I ought to have more documentation. I ought to understand this LOB software better. I ought... I have judged myself based on my oughts and other based on their successes. It is a deceptive, and ultimately destructive, perception.
