@scottalanmiller but that was the red light that indicates that the CPU is not working.

I suspect that there is a speaker there, too. Just no beep codes from that machine. Look up the specific motherboard to see if it has beep codes.

@scottalanmiller You can also use a website for this. I have some private pages on my website where i list things I need to look up occasionally. They aren't secret details or anything but just key things I did for this software or how I helped this user. That kind of stuff.

@scottalanmiller so cloud is a buzzword?

Oh yes I used to see commercials with a kid talking about the "Almighty Cloud". This was several years ago but not much has changed in the marketing.

It's absolutely used wrong all the time, but that doesn't make cloud a buzz work, cloud is a real specific thing, but almost no one uses it correctly.

I am seriously thinking about buy a SSD drive to install on my old computer that is Pentium 4 - 3.0 GHz, 3 GB RAM, with Windows XP and install there the Windows 10 so it can run faster, Do you think that is a crazy idea?

Yes, it's crazy. Even if you can get a $30 SSD like we can from Amazon here in the US (small WD Green drive), it's not worth putting $30 into a computer worth at best $5.

Pentium 4 wasn't just a 32bit processor, it was a really, really slow 32bit processor. It was so bad that they had to bring the Pentium 3 back with a new name to keep their products alive while they figured out what to do. It's considered the worst processor ever made (that got actually sold.) And with only 3GB of RAM, it doesn't have anything there going for it, either.

It's only $55 if you shop around to get a quad core, 64bit, 8GB RAM Raspberry Pi. If you are going to talk about adding an SSD to something, start with at least that.

@IRJ Shamelessly stole your ideas and tweaked the wording a bit. 🙂

      Draft 5

@Pete-S I'll look at drafting the other format over the next couple of days. If I come up with anything decent, I'll add it to this thread.

I friend of mine just made the transition to security. He said his pay doubled.

      What did he transition from?

      And WTF is security?

Right? Everyone says it, but what exactly is that job?

Its a cross between IT and compliance. There are different security roles, but they all fall in between those two sides. Some closer to IT, some in the middle, and some that are almost strictly compliance.

The biggest problem is that often they are just called "security" and can mean almost anything.

Likewise, the IT jobs are often just labeled "administration" or something and equally mean almost anything.

Here (a Fortune 100) the IT Security Department is a joke, It's all CYA stuff to limit liability to the company, nothing of real substance is done there, the normal IT department does more security than they do, a Chief Security Officer was hired a few years back, and I might add under the CFO, not the CIO. And they brought a few entry-level helpdesk guys from IT over with him to help the security team. No real experts. The CSO just copy/Pastes NIST documents. The guys on the team just pull emails out and stop a spread after a phishing attack or disables accounts that were compromised etc. Not real security work, it's just to limit legal liability is all.

@Carnival-Boy said in Job postings with no salary listed:

I wasn't, but don't focus on the actual amounts - they were just arbitrary figures. Although salaries in Europe are a lot lower than the US.

But my point was that a lot of employers are flexible and will make exceptions for good candidates, regardless of experience. Specifying a salary can cast the net too narrowly. Finding a good developer is hard over here, there aren't many available.

if you can't find a good dev - then you simply aren't offering enough money to get them to walk away from their current gig.

I have tried to remove all the terminology like DR/BCP. I have put the promotions together so hopefully that will make more sense too...

MS certs can definitely give you an edge at companies that are MS Partners, since they need to meet certain requirements

I assume that that is going away given that the certs themselves are going away.

And the MS Partner track has long had the cloud/azureO365 on the list.

As its own competency. Now that other exams are retiring they'll be needed for other competencies.
