As for the article @Breffni-Potter. I like it. You have laid everything out very clearly for the non IT decision maker. I'm not sure if I would go with the FEAR acronym personally, but it is memorable.

True, for just 5 licenses it's not that much. Both Amazon and Newegg have some crazy deals sometimes, so it pays to check them both first before buying direct.

Besides which, For these examples, would a true MSP not setup automation and systems to make this peanuts easy to do?

Not all have the right to do so. MSPs are not cookie cutter. Some don't handle things like accounts but only certain applications, for example. So they would have no tooling and this would be outside of scope.

Well it should not be too surprising: Most MSPs are SMBs, most SMBs have no grasp of finances. It's pretty general. As an MSP, if we talk to our customers, they often have no idea about finances.

Just look at things we run into all the time in the field: blatant disregard for the sunk cost fallacy, disbelieving in the concept of value and looking at price as a proxy for value (in randomly either direction), no idea of the time value of money, unable to look at risk as a cost and use this to evaluate needs, pushing CFO duties onto other departments that lack training and insight into the books, buying products without regard for suitability, paying for advice that is ignored, buying without planning...

SMBs don't just lack the knowledge of the complex stuff, they often lack the knowledge that we expect children to have. The struggles are often with the most basic concepts, not advanced ones. Ones that don't require training, just general knowledge.

Looking in the details, this isn't much of a security issue (outside of untrusted networks). It requires DNS/ARP poisoning first. If you can do that you can break down a lot of mechanisms.

Now if you want to talk about Linked In or some other Professional FB clone - then sure - fine, you will probably only subscribe to 20-50 businesses, professional people.. and assuming you keep up with that feed along side FB, then you might catch some more people.. but directly in FB specifically, I just don't see it happening much.

and it's still less than useful for a MSP for client interaction - which should primarily be kept private. I'm not saying an MSP shouldn't have a FB page -they probably should. And they should probably put new content up there regularly if for no other reason than people simply expect it.

I think that it is similar to MSPs blogging. MSP clients don't read MSP blogs. I've never heard of that happening. Like SEO, every MSP does blogging, but I know of none that have people reading their blogs (and often the content is terrible.) An MSP rarely has the kind of info that a business is interested in. Same with any consultancy, you write for your peers, not your customers. Customers of IT don't read about IT, that's why they hire IT people externally.

I know we need anonymous ways to communicate over the internet, but we also need ways to protect ourselves better.

@scottalanmiller In house is very expensive, yes. What is your take on SMBs that seem stuck in the "break-fix" mindset?

My take is "that's what makes them SMBs in most cases." There are two kinds of SMBs (mostly), those that will never be anything else and will likely fail, and those that won't be SMBs for long. Outside of rare cases like single restaurants and similar, people don't start companies intending to be SMBs. SMB is where they have stalled while they were failing to get where they wanted. They just haven't failed all the way to the point of going out of business yet.

Most of the time, the thing that makes them SMBs is either that they are new and won't stay small, or that they don't know how to run a business and make fundamentally bad decisions over and over again.
