al details. I don't regret buying or reading through any of them. Books on Windows, DOS, printers, networks, repair and troubleshooting techniques, system design and building, etc etc. All of that is good.

Answer questions posed at an interview.

Besides, bench techs don't think, according to @scottalanmiller, they work by script - aka, reading a script and doing what it says. Once you have to start making decisions, you're no longer a bench tech, you're in IT.

Arguably, if you've done bench work for any extended amount of time it really doesn't require much thought. You see the same types of issues coming in and your response is almost reflex, especially if you are working on a standardized set of hardware.

I've been programming since the late 80's. I can remember setting the time on my parent's VHS so they could record a TV show.

I can't believe I've been leaving that off my resume all these years!

      Do you remember ShowView (VCR Plus+, G-Code, VideoPlus+)? 😉

Hmm... on second thought maybe it was the early 90's? 😆

    • RE: Lightweight Linux...

Personally, I still don't get the favoritism between desktops. If I can accomplish a task without touching my mouse I'm happy. Most of what I do when I'm working from a Linux OS is done and accomplished in a terminal.realistically, all I really feel like I need is a terminal, a functioning web browser, and Libre Office on occasion.

What the GUI wrapper looks like honestly doesn't concern me all that much. The less a GUI gets in the way, the happier I am with it. I think this is why I really don't have a problem with Ubuntu's default UI for their desktop distro. I hide the Unity dock/panel and it's clean and out of the way. It's also why I like LXDE. It doesn't get in the way and doesn't consume much in regards to resources.

      What about Discord? https://discordapp.com/

I know this isn't necessarily its intended use, but it kind of gives you the best of both worlds. Immediately available voice chat, and strait text-based conversations. Just request that he remains logged in and available during his regular work hours.

It has a dedicated app, and works out of the browser as well.

My fingers are numb. I hope I don't have an aneurysm

Take a step back, breath, and focus. This isn't anything to be stressed THAT much over. At the end of the day it's all just a heap of metal. You've isolated your problem, you're just working on what you need to do to fix it.

      1. restore the original failed VM to working order

If that doesn't pan out all you need to do is get a DHCP server up and running and point it at your secondary DC for DNS.

The more stressed you are the more that stress is going to reverberate through your office/users. You've got quite a few people here to help with the troubleshooting, you'll get through it.

Sorry, I've not worked with VMWare for quite awhile. Check under /var/log directory for any logs that might shed light on what is going on with your VM.

      /var/log/vmware/hostd.log
      /var/log/messages
      ...

See if you can find the logs specific to that VM as well.

It's definitely worth buying a license. I used to use it with my old laptop. I would have a dual monitor setup on my desktop and my laptop off to the side. It is really nice when you have to work with something across the building and need to pickup and go and are too lazy to have to be bothered with unhooking cables or detaching from a dock. 🙂

I like Indiana. I've always imagined Evansville would be a really nice place, but it's one of the few cities in that part of the country that I have never been to.

It is a nice little city on the Ohio. It is off to it's own small corner of the state and maintains an identity all it's own. We don't even share the same time zone as the rest of the state! 🙂

And we're also relatively close to Louisville, St. Louis, Nashville, and Indianapolis.
