@Dashrender @dbeato and @black3dynamite Thanks for all the input! 2 bugs were found and corrected.

      1. @black3dynamite I'm going to go ahead and remove the massive amounts of companies that were created due to this issue so that you can start fresh.

      2. the login issue where it was jumping away from the password entry input was a routing issue that has been fixed.

We're going to be rolling out a release here in a little bit to resolve these issues. I'll make a post as soon as the deployment has finished. Thanks again everybody.

Okay everyone, sorry I stepped away for a second to get some food really quickly. To answer some questions. Going to go through the list here:

@Dashrender No we aren't using wordpress in the slightest, front end is like stated previously just very rough at the moment.

@Dashrender, @dbeato, Looking into the disappearing password set here in a minute. We haven't seen that before so I'll let you guys know as soon as I figure out what is going on.

Should I put this on a small handful of PCs in my office, or rather only home machines?

Oh definitely go ahead for office machines. Definitely. Just be aware this is pre-beta, very early testing. We are pretty confident that this is safe and the big "fear" is that it just won't work or won't look nice or doesn't do as many things as you want. The local agent components are very heavily tested and should be totally safe on office machines, even at this stage. So definitely go ahead. For your office, you'll want to create a single company when you make your account. Either the company that you work for or you as an MSP if you are an MSP user, for example. Sodium is free for personal OR business use. But as it works right now, you'll need independent accounts (which is fine, just make two accounts) to keep your personal machines separate from your office ones.

The assumption with how the system works is that we expect that you'll use it at home as well as work, just because... why not? That way you see it in use in more environments and get more out of it. But, of course, many people will only do one or the other.

Only the Windows installer is working, I think. Don't try it with Linux.

      https://sodium.waxquixotic.com

It requires a "company" to which a machine will be assigned. So for person testing, just make a "company" of your own name or family name or something that makes sense for personal use. Right now you'll need to use Chrome, FF and Edge aren't working reliably yet. One thing at a time. We are dropping new updates a few times a day, so things are changing constantly. But for recent Windows versions, installs are working and data collection is working. Once you download the installer, you can install on unlimited Windows boxes and they will all show up under your personal account.

    • Sodium Update

So over here at Quixotic we've been working at a feverish pace to try to get the MVP of Sodium up and running. For those who don't know Sodium is a free RMM software with the goal of becoming so much more than that. We made a huge step forward tonight (this morning?) having our production server go live and confirming that the backend is (to this point) working as intended! The front end is working as well but we have some major plans in regards to redesigning it to better suit everyone's needs. While this is very early on in the development process I'm really pleased with how this weekend went and it's not close to over yet. We've done some testing including putting together an environment of about 8 machines without any issues and are at this pointing looking for others who would enjoy testing some EXTREMELY early stage software with the goal of giving us feedback and finding ways to help us make it suit what everyone is looking for. Obviously as was stated this is a very early stage and the interface is still very rough so keep that in mind.

    • RE: The Difference Between IT and Software Engineering

@EddieJennings If IT doesn't do it then there could be environmental factors that weren't set up identically to prod that could influence who code runs, thus creating bugs and wasted time once the code hits production.

@scottalanmiller @wirestyle22 We have local test environments along side of test servers. It's always worth being able to test before going to prod.

@scottalanmiller Exactly, it makes them bad at both and is dangerous for the deployment process etc. Something is likely to get screwed up because people aren't as knowledgeable and results in a waste of time and money fixing something that should have been handled by people dedicated to that particular operation/department. Not to mention if software engineers are spending their time doing that, they are doing less coding. This slows down the SDLC and also slows down their learning and makes them worse developers.

Task switching kills productivity. And thinking about dev work and thinking about operations are major context switches.

lol heck, just switching from being in ML back to my dev work kills my productivity 😉

@scottalanmiller Couldn't agree more. I love all of these events. There was quite the span of time where I didn't get to attend anything so I'm very happy to be able to attend meet ups etc again. Making new connections is immensely important.

Hopefully you can get out to a few this year.

My goal is definitely a few more this year.

Yes, we would often call them the engineering department (except in Oregon where engineer is a negative term for legal reasons) or a development department or something similar. Whoever they report up to is doing the role of the CTO.

Yep, we're the engineering department here. Environment issues get handled by IT where code related issues get handled by us (beyond normal development). IT also handles all maintenance of environments in terms of the servers themselves, application deployments, migrations etc (normal responsibilities of IT).

The Distillery is always a great choice for beer/food/wings. Looks like there is one only 2 miles away. There are 3 of them that I know of, one on Mt. Hope like 2 miles away, one in henrietta and one closer to greece.

@scottalanmiller @BigLittle Agreed. Even though this is a nice convenience and definitely better than nothing, being there in person is still much better. This should be seen as a last resort kind of situation :).

    • RE: The Difference Between IT and Software Engineering

@scottalanmiller Great points here. IT and Software Engineering are extremely different but also the culture behind each side of this coin is very different like you said. As someone who has worked on both sides of this coin your point that most on the IT side have at least some programming experience where most software engineers tend to have very little to no IT experience is very accurate. This makes it very interesting when you have software engineers trying to support their own software, reason being they tend to not have the experience to deal with environmental issues that come up (or at least that's what I see happen fairly regularly).
