I think this is just another sign that SW as a whole is ailing. Time will tell, but I would guess their market penetration won't improve, and will likely diminish, especially in Europe.

Sounds fun, going to have to make this happen.

Glad to hear - It should be a good time and a great conference. The area is fairly new, but plenty of things to do in the area. We're planning on a couple of events that should turn out to be a good time.

    • Rocket Chat on Ubuntu - Help please

A little background - I am a Linux N00b, so this is all new to me.

Here's what I've done so far:

Setup a new VM running Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS, and this all seems fine. I have been able to login and take root control.

I then attempted to do a snap install of the rocketchat-server, and get the following error after the installation process completes:

error: cannot communicate with server: Post http://localhost/v2/snaps/rocketchat-server: dial unix /run/snapd.socket: connect: connection refused

and leaves me at the prompt

I have configured a static IPv4 address, and can ping the address

Any ideas on how to address this issue?

      Thanks!

@scottalanmiller said in Rocket Chat on Ubuntu - Help please:

First thing, I would not use Ubuntu 16.04. That's not horribly old, but it is not current. Ubuntu 16.10 is current and what we have just tested this install on two weeks ago and had it work. It's unlikely that 16.04 is the issue, but there is no reason to be troubleshooting that on top of everything else. With Ubuntu you always want to run current as they don't have an LTS product (they have LTS labels, not LTS products.) So for production, you always need to be on current if you need full support unless you are dealing with software that only locks to semi-random old versions (which is an indicator to avoid those products on Ubuntu in general.)

      Upgrading now - stay tuned

    • MangoCon Hotel Update

At the request of many, Dominica and I took a trip over to the MangoCon venue to check out the hotel situation as the google street views have not been updated. We are happy to report that there are sidewalks and walkways from most of the close hotels. The top 7 hotels that are within walking distance and with reasonable walking routes.

The venue is next door to The Toyota Music Factory (Hotel Map)

      Texican Court
      Westin Irving Convention Center
      Dallas Marriot Las Colinas
      Holiday Inn Las Colinas
      Aloft Las Colinas
Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas
      Homewood Suites Dallas Irving

As you can see from the map, there are a number of other choices, although these would likely require a short Uber, Lyft, or Taxi ride.

      Youtube Video

This is of the front of the venue, and the whole area is filled with similar retail and nice sidewalks.

Let me know if you have any questions.

As soon as I remove the virtual switch, NIC2 comes back online, and can be pinged from the network. It appears this issue is on the host level.

    • RE: Hyper-V Guest - Unidentified Network

The solution to removing them and re-establishing the vSwitch and VM Adapters was to remove the Hyper-V Role and then reinstall the role.
      Specifically the following steps:

      1. Remove the network connections to the VMs
      2. Remove the vSwitch
      3. Dissolve the NIC Team
      4. Remove the Hyper-V Role
      5. Reboot
      6. Create new NIC Team
      7. Reinstall Hyper-V Role (Create vSwitch during role installation)
      8. Reboot
      9. Reattach the VMs and assign IPs if necessary

Everything appears to work as normal now. Unsure of what caused the issue, but may have been related to a hard shutdown caused by a power outage and failure of the backup generator.

    • RE: MSP or VAR or just avoid

@carnival-boy A VAR, is generally selling one type of product or service. Like yourself. Your company sells MS product, and you service MS Product, so your interest in a customer is to keep them on Microsoft product, and thereby make servicing those products a key component of your business.

A true MSP is product agnostic. They don't really care if you use Microsoft, or Linux, or Oracle, or whatever. They don't have an interest in the brand of equipment, or the software platform. All they really care about is providing service to their client in the best possible way.

Sure an MSP sells services, but the big difference is a true MSP has no vested interest in pushing you into specific products or services. On the other hand, A VAR has a HUGE interest in selling you specific products or services. Specifically, their products, which then, in many cases, require their services.

    • RE: MSP or VAR or just avoid

@hobbit666 Exactly. An MSP wouldn't care if it's Scale, or Starwind, or someone else, as long as the product fits your business. For example, the last company I worked at needed complex VLANs, so we contracted with an MSP to come in and set that up. They didn't really care what brand of network gear we had, as long as it supported our goals. In this case, Layer 3 switches. We already had them, and they fit the purpose. If we didn't have Layer 3 switches, they certainly would have told us that we needed them to make this work. They might recommend a particular brand or model, but only because they've worked with a lot of different brands and models and can provide experienced recommendations. They aren't selling me switches, but simply telling me what is best for our purpose.

A VAR, on the other hand, would have recommended a specific switch, and offered to supply it along with the service, and had this other company done that, they would have been a VAR, not an MSP, as they have a vested interest in selling us swtiches that make them money.
