I'm a huge personal privacy advocate.

FYI, you can be compelled to scan your finger to unlock your phone by police, but you can not be compelled to provide the unlock code.

That's a good point - if I were stopped by the police I'd reboot the phone to force usage of the keycode.

I believe it requires a connection - if the community is down for maintenance then you can't log in to your local app. Once you are authenticated then you can block the connection however.

@Nic Nice. That's sad about the auto report your life to Microsoft settings. They did the right thing with 8, I figured it would have stayed that way.

I just read a report saying that they're taking all the data collection that 10 is doing and adding it into 7 & 8 with an update.

reminds me of that poor sod on reddit who was all excited to get a job at google. they posted all these pictures of their uniform and other stuff and then google fired them for breaking NDA.

I use T-Mobile and love it. It's not the best if you travel a lot, but for a homebody like me it works perfectly well.

    • RE: Ad blocker performance comparison

I'd like an opt in service for ads. Rather than tracking me around the web, I tell you things I want to see ads for, like video games. Or I temporarily turn on ads for fridges if I'm shopping for a new fridge. That way I get to choose what I want to see.

    • RE: How Do I Describe Being Weird?

I'd just classify that under "gut feeling". The funny thing is that in the times I've hired people, I always knew right away if they were a good fit or not - there's been times where I've disregarded that gut feeling and I've always regretted it.

    • RE: Weight Loss Surgery?

Sleep study is a great suggestion. Lack of sleep is proven to cause obesity. If you can get better sleep that is half the battle. Plus if you are sleep deprived then you have no energy or will power to make any other changes in your life.

    • Ransomware: to pay or not to pay

One of our threat researchers wrote a blog about the FBI's recent recommendation to pay the ransom:
      http://www.webroot.com/blog/2015/10/28/fbi-says-just-pay-ransom/

Your thoughts? How much money would they have to charge for you to not pay them if you didn't have a backup?

      @RojoLoco said:

Paying is terrible advice in nearly every case. I spoke with the local Spice Corps leader last month about this very topic... his stance was that in 3 different cases where a company had paid the ransom, the number of highly targeted spearphishing attacks went through the roof because that company is now marked with a big, red bullseye that says "WE ARE SUCKERS< WE CLICK EVERYTHING AND WE PAY THE RANSOM!"

Paying the ransom makes you a repeat target.... lists of companies that pay are probably easy to find on the dark webz...

Not to mention the fact that paying helps the proliferation of cryptoware.

That is a good point and not one I've seen brought up a lot. If you don't take steps to stop it happening again then you're just going to get bled dry.

    • RE: Why CPAPs Need to Be Available

Usually it isn't immediate life or death. Yes over the long term it will shorten your life and make you die of a heart attack, but usually you've been living with it for a while before you even get diagnosed.

There are some possible negative side effects, such as having the pressure too high and causing central apnea.

The thing you have to remember is that you and I, Scott, are 3+ standard deviations above the mean intelligence, so we're perfectly capable of purchasing and setting up our own system. The other 99.9% of people aren't that smart 🙂

I've had it happen with trying to send someone an Imgur link in a PM. And this is after Imgur fixed their problem with infected code on their servers.
