If you want to know more about vSphere 6 or VSAN, there are lots of tasks in CloudCred related to them. Oh yeah, and our team is not very active these days.

Probably because VMware isn't as exciting as it used to be 4-6 months ago. I'm curious what new Hyper-V improvements will be in Windows Server 10 (although apparently it's just going to be called "windows server", no version)

vCloud is a product that you buy, it's not a service. VMware has a cloud service, but that isn't it. This is for on premises clouds. Amazon and Rackspace are hosted products only. Rackspace's on premises name would be OpenStack.

I would definitely not choose them. [VMware] Small time. Amazon is the top player for a reason. Rackspace is by far the best for the SMB market. And I mean by far.

The reason to use VMware's public cloud is so that you can transparently move workloads from a local VMware cloud to the public one. Not really a great idea anyway, this means you've not understood cloud and screwed up already.

      Thanks, that clears that up.

Well that's something. Is it a good incentive? What a weird thing to offer, as if getting a master's helps them in any way.

Fairly good. I've argued that point in the past... but working for/with friends has its perks.

I've done this too for a small office, MS doesn't delete date for at least 60 days if not longer, and you receive a ton of emails before they do it too.

But am I correct about users getting kicked out of MS Office once the subscription expires? Or do they wait a day or two after the subscription expires?

oh, I'm the expiration and renewal happened very quickly for me, so no one saw anything - I can't say what you're users will see. Maybe Greg will know.

Though knowing MS, I'd be surprised if it was a hard cut date - I would expect MS to give a several day grace period incase IT forgets to renew, etc.

I saw the talk of "filesystems" as "backup." Getting to CentOS 7 would be good, although CentOS 6 would be good enough. The talk of backups makes no sense.

This is for trading systems. It is not for anything that a normal SMB or even a normal enterprise would face. This is very specialized. Normal workloads need throughput optimization not latency optimization. So this would be the opposite of what you would want.

hmm.. I find myself kinda in the middle. I use both email and IM a lot, but the idea of deploying IM in my office to me personally is undesirable because I believe that it would just be a way for people to gossip all day long, and not offer a real benefit to the company.

This is the same logic that I give for why I feel that everyone should be work from home and not in an office. Whenever I go into a large office I realize that there are no real meetings, just people talking about sports and gambling. Sometimes sports gambling. Nothing but a waste of time.

Yes, but without large corporate offices, how are you to impress the potential clients? It's all a farce to be honest...

In the case of this application (Epicor), they made some big steps to just take out the Progress layer that was there even if you had a SQL back end. I'll take that for now.

Sounds like some seriously weak software from all descriptions. Have you guys looked at anything from this millennium? You might have your mind blown by how modern software works in this space. Running 90s software for a core function has to be really painful.

They don't, but as that is generally how it is used, it's not a flag.

So do you direct your users to the site where the RemoteApp gets published to use to connect to it, or do you put a shortcut on their desktops for the RemoteApp as well? I'm assuming there is no difference in functionality but don't really know at this point.

I push a shortcut. You cannot trust users to find anything via direction.

Yeah I do it like once a week at least for someone. But today it's just not working.

I just got a call from Microsoft. Try going to Billing -> Subscriptions. Click on the subscription whose licenses need to be increased, and then click Change License Quantity on the far right. The link is kind of small, but it will take you to a screen where you can add licenses to the subscription you have very easily. It worked for me.
