Been without those for a few years now. Don't miss them at all. Just water and coffee now.

      Never was a coffee drinker.

    • New Years Resolutions?

      What are your resolutions?

      I have 2.

      • Cut sodas. Drink nothing but water and sweet tea (occasionally on the sweet tea).

      • Start working out and becoming more active. I'm not going out, getting a gym membership for an entire year and only using it for a day. Just thinking about starting off with some walking/jogging/running and some aerobics to burn the fat off. Not so much on building muscle yet as to lose the weight.

a and like the fact of the free controller, either in the cloud or on-prem.

Just an FYI, the cloud is a private cloud that you setup and manage, or you rent space on someone else's controller. Ubiquiti doesn't host for you. Just wanted to clarify.

Not a private cloud. There is no suggestion of that. Nearly everyone does it on public cloud. Never heard of anyone ever doing it on private.

Clearly I'm using the wrong term. The controller isn't a cloud software - right? it runs in Linux or Windows. He needs a VM running in someone else's system, like DO. I didn't think those were clouds?

Well currently, one plant is running with Cisco Meraki in the cloud while the other plant is controllerless with with AP being the master.

I would host this controller in a VM in our colocation. But I see what you are saying as hosting the controller in a VM in like AWS or Azure or something of that nature.

What Dash means is that there is no hosted option. It's just software. You install it on your own VM, which would normally be public cloud, it's not SaaS hosted by the vendor.

I'd rather host it internally in my colo anyways.

How about device failures? Maybe I should ask it this way. What is the expected lifespan of these devices?

    • Considering Ubiquiti Wireless

I currently have Aruba in my office and it sucks. Zero handoff for the nomads in the back is no problem. The problem seems to be the way Aruba handles RADIUS for the front. No matter.

I am considering trying out Ubiquiti. Devices seems cheap enough in comparison to Aruba and like the fact of the free controller, either in the cloud or on-prem. However, I do have a question. If I have APs at one location and the controller is in my colo (geographically separate) and both locations lose connection for some reason, do the APs keep operating or do they stop?

Also, in the time frame that y'all have been putting them in, how many times have you had to do any support calls on them and were they because of an AP device failure?

This is like a certain company making software that would require authentication against the said company's systems and no local accounts. Not pointing any fingers, just saying.

    • RE: AD on top of something that depends on it

Typically, when I am installing a system, I like to keep a local account with a strong password that only the IT manager and I know, while also adding AD authentication as well for more manageability. I believe that this is best practice because example like yesterday's episode. But this is generally more for systems that are not apart of the core infrastructure, such as the host or storage. When it comes to host and storage, the storage is isolated from the house network and just attached to the host. They both would use a set of credentials that are local and not tied to AD for reasons such as this.

I believe in wargaming with Murphy's law in my head. Can I foresee all possible failures? No, but hopefully I can be prepared for when Murphy attempts to change the playing field to the real world. In doing so, I try to mitigate as many risks as possible before they can happen.

@scottalanmiller He's been talking to his most trusted employee, a developer. Apparently he doesn't even understand that that Xen and the SAN are two completely different things...

I do plan on updating my LinkedIn profile and resume over the next few days.

Is this trusted employee also kinfolk?

I have wondered too about the transitional desk. Though I can't stand for extended periods due to nerve damage and now it would seem a bad ankle.

I've used them and I love them. I REALLY want a walking desk, with a treadmill. But feel like I'd fall over.

When I worked as an intern for the Fed, one of the ladies had one. It took a lot of red tape for her to get it in there and a lot more red tape for her to get it out when she left for DC.

@travisdh1 @seal Full backup created with what? As I noted yesterday there is no backup solution in place as of yet, unless you're referring to something I'm not grokking.

XenServer is able to create backups of its VMs, but, from my experience, its not in the GUI. You'd have to go to the CLI. Here are a few helps from what I have found.

At this point, I'm even at a loss on trying to figure out where to begin to explain to him how this is possible, as he hasn't seem to accept the premise in the first place.

Not your job to. If he doesn't believe it, then the system is healthy and there is nothing more for you to do. His system being down is his decision at this point.

If this is truly the case, then the owner is either incompetant in IT, which is typically the case, or he is delusional and needs mental help. I'm not trying to make this a joke either. However, delusional might also show itself in other aspects in his life. I'm not a psychiatrist so don't take this as advice.

When is he due back in the office? I would try to get on his schedule first thing ASAP, sit down with him, and talk with him about this. Maybe he can't visualize it over the phone, but once you draw it out for him, then he might be able to understand.

If he still refuses, I'd have a sheet of paper that a lawyer has drawn up that takes the blame off of you that he has to sign. CYA all you can here. Document everything and how you found it. I'd also be looking actively for other opportunities as well with a resignation in hand as a last resort.

@Dashrender said in MS Surface membership?:

Really I don't see any difference in this than the iphone club from Apple these days - other than you all hate them. I don't have an opinion as I haven't been burnt by one personally.

The price $53/m for 24 months, $1272 and you own it at the end (I think) not bad. And the lock-in for them hoping you'll trade it in for the next model at 12 or 18 months, get a new monthly payment and a new device.

Really if you're the type to get a new computer frequently, or a new phone frequently, these plans mostly make sense. Do you pay the most, probably, but there's a lot less hassle selling the device off at the end.

For the most part, I think this is true. To me, leasing an iPhone makes more sense than leasing a car. Sure a car depreciates in value, but once its paid off its yours and its still usable. If you pay off a phone, then you may get another year or 2 out of it. But after a while, it will either break or the network will upgrade their network so far that they will quit supporting your phone.

If I rely on my phone for work or whatnot, then it would probably make more sense to lease it. This way you can ensure that you will have a reliable phone for the most part. When its not working, trade it in and get one that does work. Its their phone. They are just renting it out to you.

@NerdyDad On the plus side, this environment was so effed up, I'm not THAT terribly upset about starting from scratch. It'll be a beating to get a lot of that data back, however. Anyone know of any services able to accomplish such a thing?

I ran into a similar issue with a failed drive almost 2 months ago. Almost lost the farm on it. I had a RAID6 on an EqualLogics. I called ACE Data Recovery here in Dallas. They told me to bring my last failed drive and a brand new drive of the same model and size to them. Overnight and $2,400 later, my SAN was limping along enough for me to get the data off of it and retire the SAN. I don't know where at in Dallas you are, but it might be worth checking out. They may be able to help.
