@IRJ said in How do you guys handle counter offers?:

19% is pretty minimal for a new job in IT. If we are talkihg about $100k vs $119k that is very minimal for leaving a job. Usually 30% or more is what people leave to get. It's not uncommon to get 50% when switching jobs in IT. Especially if you are at like $60k now then 10% would be less than $10k increase.

Did you see if you could get more than 19% for a new job?

It's a 19% NET raise when factoring in benefits, commute, etc. The GROSS raise is 27%. Plus a year end bonus depending on company and personal performance.

I’m at the point where it would need to be a 50% raise to even consider anything. My current employer has hinted on looking to accommodate the 50% raise.

You will never have a good situation if they are "willing to accommodate" and not actively happy with the rate. It's good for a little bit, but over the long haul, it's an unhappy situation. They didn't see you as worth that today, they are only going to pay you that under pressure. They will always see you as strong arming them and will resent you. You will not be happy with the situation and resent them. The company you turn down will see you as having wasted their time and not want you in the future. No one wins.

This is a great point. It seems I will be burning 2 bridges.

@scottalanmiller Scott, great points. I really appreciate your perspective. So it would be a good idea to not even entertain the counter offer and just politely inform them I'm moving on?

If you take the new job, how long until you'd be at the 50% anyways via raises? Or close enough.

New job is eligible for year end bonus depending on company and personal performance. So could be much closer than I can forecast. I would estimate 5-7 years.

@Obsolesce No, I've been told I was the first pick and if I don't accept, they will offer the job to someone else.

    • How do you guys handle counter offers?

How do you guys handle counter offers? I’ve been offered a new job with a 19% pay increase. I networked the new job with a former colleague from years past. My current employer is asking me to give them a number I would need to be at to stay after providing my notice today. I have the opinion that you become tainted once your employer knows you were searching for a job.

The job offer gives you leverage to ask for a raise but more often you are looking for change more than the raise. I’m in that situation now and my current employer is asking me for a number to get me to stay. I’m at the point where it would need to be a 50% raise to even consider anything. My current employer has hinted on looking to accommodate the 50% raise. I’m debating if I should play the counter offer game or not. I know it’s a very personal decision, but I respect members of this community opinions and would appreciate any feedback.

    • RE: Stuck supporting out-of-date Windows Servers, what options do I have?

Another option that wasn't mentioned is migrating the 2008R2 servers to Azure. Once migrated into Azure, you get security updates for 3 more years after the January 14, 2020 end of support.

    • Stuck supporting out-of-date Windows Servers, what options do I have?

I’m dealing with a company that has an old unsupported ERP system running on Windows Server 2008R2 servers. The company has since migrated to SAP but didn’t bring over all the old data from past years. The company is obligated to keep at least 7 years of history for audits, etc… IT will be exporting as much data as we can, but it will be hard to capture all necessary data and have it be easily searchable for employees to look back on sales history, inventory records, etc… The old ERP system consists of 1 Windows Server 2008R2 application server hosting a Pervasive SQL database and 4 Windows Server 2008R2 RDP servers that have the old ERP application installed. I can drop down the RDP server count to 1. The servers are virtual in a VMware environment. I can’t spin up new Windows 2019 servers and reinstall the old ERP application since it is no longer supported on anything past Windows Server 2008R2. What options do I have to create some sort of stand-alone emergency infrastructure that is isolated from the main network? I want to try and keep this simple but need someone to bounce ideas off. Any help, tips, or advice on this?

@JaredBusch @scottalanmiller I'm shocked to hear you prefer Spirit. I've never flown it, but it's the butt of all jokes. The fact that both you picked Spirit really shines a new light on the airline for me.

Good point - stick with an i5 or even an i3 if possible, avoid the i7.

Yes, this is very true. The core i7 is going to be overkill. Thanks for pointing that out.

@Kelly Thanks Kelly. The SB's are really expensive. This Dell Latitude may be more cost effective. The C-level isn't doing anything that would require heavy graphics lifting. I will have to see how the Latitude battery life compares to the SB2.

What about when the C-level is working from home. They are used to connecting their notebooks to docking stations that have dual monitor setups. Is there a particular model that is better suited for this?

Around these parts you'll get no love for anything Lenovo - After SuperFish, that company is blacklisted - if not for life, for a long while yet.

I have used a few Surface Pros - they seem fine for the most part. My wife has an SP5 - she seems to like it. I just rolled out an SP6 to my boss 6 months ago - no issues so far.

I agree with sticking with the Latitude series on Dell - this is a company laptop, so go with business gear.

I know JB has an XPS, and as far as I know, he likes it.

Good point @Dashrender. Honestly I was trying to decide between the SP6 and the XPS. I'm going to throw the SB2 into the mix as well since I'm seeing that the battery life is improved over the SP

I have a C-Level executive that wants a 2-in-1 laptop. I’m trying to decide to recommend the Microsoft Surface Pro, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga, or a Dell XPS 13 7390. I have no experience with any of the 3 listed. Has anyone deployed one of these products and your employee and/or customer is happy with? Is there another 2-in-1 product that I’m missing?

If they need serious (battery) longevity then Surface Book 2 would the the direction to go in. The graphics horsepower available in the upper end of the line can be very helpful for working with 3D/CAD/CAM files.

@PhlipElder Yes, my C-level travels frequently. He did stress he is interested in serious battery longevity. Thanks for your input.

    • RE: Turn off old ERP system running on Win2008R2 and view the exported data

@DustinB3403 The new ERP system is SAP. The SAP consultants are long gone now and technically the archived data on the old ERP isn't necessary to be imported into the new SAP system. You know how it goes, sometimes you need to look back at a old data to help you with something else. We just wanted to turn off the old Windows 2008R2 servers yet still give the users access to the old data if necessary. I will have to see how large the exported CSV files turn out to be. A nice simple solid option rather than going through all the steps to setup a Fedora DB server though.

    • Turn off old ERP system running on Win2008R2 and view the exported data

I’m looking for a solution to allow users to view data from an old ERP system that is running on Windows 2008R2 servers. The company has migrated away from the old ERP, but not all information has been migrated into the new ERP system. Users are still accessing the old ERP system for data that didn’t get migrated. The old ERP system is running on a Windows 2008R2 sever with Pervasive SQL database backend. I will have the ability to export data to CSV files. Can someone point me in the right direction for users to view the archived data? My first thought was to create a new Fedora server with MariaDB installed. I could import the CSV files from the old ERP system into the MariaDB. I would then install some sort of simple web interface like Adminer for users to access the database in a GUI. Is there another solution that someone can point me to that would make more sense, or am I on the right track?

I'm using the Microsoft To-Do app since I have an Office 365 subscription. This links with your tasks in Outlook, but I'm going to the dedicated webpage in my O365 portal. Then using the app on my cell when on the go. I was using Google Keep before To-Do, but now Keep is used for my personal tasks and notes to keep them separate.

    • RE: Cloud CyberSecurity monitoring and alerting

After comparing the Coronet vs the MS E5 cloud app security license, I'm not seeing any alerts in Coronet that are already available in the cloud app security portal. The Coronet interface is just a improved and easier to work with interface. I'll be sticking with my E5 license for now since I'm getting the alerts I need with only paying for one E5 license vs paying per user with Coronet.
