    • RE: I'm the Youngest Wherever I Go

@ajstringham I know how you feel. I'm 21, turning 22 in December. I've been here for almost 4 years now, and I'm still the youngest... however, I'm no longer the junior as far as responsibilities go 🙂
That said, I have a side-kick starting in December who will be just out of school, and I will no longer be the youngest person in the company. Yay!

It's not just 'in my company' either - I went to a seminar for ERP software last week, I was a good 20 years younger than everyone else there. I just made sure to speak up, nod my head and show I knew what I was on about 🙂

    • RE: What Are You Doing Right Now

      Trying to stay awake.
Night before last I got about 4 hours sleep. We had visitors in, and then after they left my mum wanted help listing something on ebay. At about ten minutes to midnight, I remembered that I have to be at work before 6am for a training webinar (which means leaving at 5:30am). Scurried to bed as fast as possible, about half an hour later my mum came in to open my door for the heater to work/check on me (old habit from when we were little). She hovered by my bed for what seemed like ages, (I was pretending I was asleep, like I wished I was). Finally I said, what's the matter? And she says, oh, there's a red light flashing on your phone. I groaned... a red light meant I hadn't pulled the blind down... which meant I hadn't even set an alarm. 😞
So after shining a bright phone light in my eyes for several seconds, I gave up pretending, went downstairs and tried some portotherapy. Woke up semi chirpy a very few short hours later...

@Carnival Boy and all, Sorry to take so long to reply (forgot I posted this and didn't check in!)
I think you've hit the nail on the head though. And yeah, she is more the call IT and hit the coffee machine type 🙂
Thanks all for your input, helped me to clear my head on this one.

@Bill-Kindle , thanks, that's interesting - although I don't need her to get right into networking or anything - I'm more meaning the lower end of tech help from "I don't know how to install this new signature" to "my accounting software won't find the company file (that's because you're looking on the desktop)" to "can you help me find this email from 2012" to "my internet won't work" etc.

And I guess a basic knowledge of how our Exchange/VM/Server interact.

    • Training someone to troubleshoot

Ok, so as a few of you probably know, I'm not actually an IT Pro, I'm a marketer with an interest in IT and I look after IT here in our small business. (hence I basically don't post here aside from the Water Closet)
The situation is that in a few months, I am hoping to move on from here and so will be most likely handing the IT role over to one of my coworkers who seems fairly keen to take it on. Her IT knowledge is quite minimal though and her approach is kind of to

      1. hear of issue
      2. call our tech company which we pay (a fair bit) per hour.
Not that much different, except I would trouble shoot and knock out 75% of the issues a lot faster and without additional charges to the company.

Now my theory is that if I could give her a couple guides on trouble shooting simple problems, I could walk her through those, and try to show her how to google the rest, and then contact the tech company if she doesn't get anywhere. Any ideas on what sort of things I should put down in a troubleshooting guide? Or am I coming at it completely wrong?

    • RE: Schedule task to show up as calendar appointment

      Is this in Outlook?
A task is a separate item from a calendar appointment, however you can add a reminder to a task (but that still won't show as scheduled time on the calendar).

    • RE: Not always about the certifications and or "brand" of worker.

@Gabi I think a lot of people see all of Aus as a sunny, warm place.
They don't realise that for 1/3-1/2 of the year most of us happen to be perishingly cold too 🙂
      Welcome by the way!

I get on better than I expected with open plan. Still frustrating some times though, I would give anything to be able to shut off and say no interruptions, but it's impossible.

    • Speed reading, anyone?

<reposting here because I felt a bit lonely on the other one and then realised that most people are in bed... :))

Just came across this reading speed tester, courtesy of a LI article.

I just got 744 words per minute - apparently that puts me somewhere between college professors and high-performing college students.

Cause to brag, or are the 'averages' low? 🙂

@alexntg Sorry, mine looks like that too (Win 7), in that clip I'm hovering over the second tab.

    • Firefox 29... Is it meant to look like this?

My firefox installation just updated itself to 29.0 this morning.
I have just started noticing that when it is minimised (actually happens when maximised too but not so obvious) the other tabs look like ...air. I don't know quite why it bugs me so much but it honestly looks broken and bleeding to me.
Is this a feature (i.e. does it look like this for everyone), or is there something wrong with it? I really don't like it...

Do you like the 29 look?
Personally, I use FF because I say Chrome looks 'ugly'... now they look identical. 😞
I guess I will live through it though 🙂
