      My country! It is awesome

It was really beautiful there. The people were amazingly friendly and patient with my broken Spanish.

I'm hoping to fit a reread of the Stormlight Archive in over Christmas along with Sanderson's Skyward (going to have to fight for time with that one with my 14 year old).

I just started book 2. Book 4 is due out this coming year along with the last Wax and Wayne near in time.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited about what he posted yesterday. Knowing that Stormlight Archive is only 4 of 10 kind of put things into perspective. Sanderson probably has a large group of people hoping for his continued health and well being.

Sanderson's Stormlight Archive, I'll have to check it out.

Just finished building a Discord bot for a friend and hosting it on AWS.

Nice. I keep wanting to play with stuff like this but never actually stop and look up how to do it.

Here's the tutorial I used: https://anidiots.guide/getting-started/getting-started-long-version. It was pretty good for a starter. Most bots can run on AWS free too, so that is helpful.

@Kelly said in locking down network:

If your set of sites you're dropping is very low then you could just put in a DNS record on your on-premise DNS server (assuming you have one). For example if you don't want people to be able to get to myshoppingsite.com then you could create a CNAME record on your server that sets myshoppingsite.com to send all traffic company.com.

I would strongly recommend against using this method if you need to handle more than 10 sites.

Just for completeness - a CNAME alone wouldn't work here. You'd need to create a root SOA on your internal DNS for myshoppingsite.com, then under that create a CNAME that points to your other site.

I've been out of hands on work for a little while, but why would you need the SOA for this to work? Unless the workstation has it cached wouldn't the CNAME handle it? Not arguing, trying to understand.

    • MeshCentral - Anyone tried this?

I ran across this on another site, and I was curious if any of you have worked with it: https://www.meshcommander.com/meshcentral2. I like the idea of being able to drop a Raspberry Pi on a site and then use it for remote admin of Windows machines. Assuming the software itself is secure it would be much simpler to provide remote support than many other tools out there, and much more inexpensive.

Looks like they rebranded Bushel as Jamf Now. It is $2 (USD)/user/mo after the first three devices. You can try it for free though: https://www.jamf.com/products/jamf-now/.

Jamf is really good. The best in the business for managing Apple gear. It is also one of the most expensive. They have a more inexpensive product that has fewer features, but might fit the bill. There are a few free ones as well. You're going to want to get started with the Apple side of things because they're not very fast or responsive, and you have to have their APNS set up before you can use any MDM on their devices.

Got loads on the "To Do" List but can't decide what to tackle next

I like to break things into an "A", "B", and "C" list. A's are things that are time critical and important, B's are not time critical, but are important, and C's are neither or can be delayed in favor of others. There are many different ways of sorting your tasks, but this one is fast and easy, so I've found it helps when you're unmotivated or confused since the minimum brain requirements are low.

You might look at the tools that Apple is pushing (and thus supporting). I don't know if Munki will fit your requirements, but it may.

Here is a list of several projects for managing macOS: https://simplemdm.com/2018/07/19/popular-open-source-tools-for-mac-admins/. NoMAD is pretty cool if you're in a Windows-centric environment.

    • RE: Security while Traveling -

The problem with public WiFi is not the attacks that your device is subjected to, but the vulnerability of the packets as they traverse the unknown AP. Aside from the basics I spend more time and energy securing that traffic because the modern OS with no public services is fairly secure. Most attackers will go after the low hanging fruit, and that is the internet bound traffic.
