Going away from the open core was the right step. Still, Nextcloud (.com) is owned by the Nextcloud GmbH, will there ever be non-profit organization or a foundation that holds all the trademarks and domains.

Good question and the answer is 'yes'. Frankly we wanted to do this much earlier but it is a fair amount of work and we are still very busy building up the project. The plan is to create a foundation that would own the trademark and, under certain circumstances (like a take-over of the business) have the right to take it away from the company. The board of the foundation would consist of a majority of non-company-affiliated people, and the community should vote on who's on there.

Open questions are what else the foundation should do. Accept and handle donations? Do the conference? Even some development? Or nothing other than the trademark protection? These things have their pro's and cons so we have to have a wider discussion still. Perhaps at the upcoming Nextcloud conference, I'm not sure yet. We will have a solution in 2017, though, I am quite certain of that.

      as per @JK74

      JK74 about an hour ago

I'm in the Netherlands and as such mo focus is Dutch localized support for our Church members.
I notice now that I'm struggling to get some e-mail templates changed in Dutch Language ; and I see as well other client GUI text still is in English; is there a way we can help or report those defects or is local localization support a low fruit?

we use transifex for translation, help is always welcome!!! https://www.transifex.com/nextcloud/nextcloud/dashboard/

@jospoortvliet Thanks! Is there any release date? Or preview client? It was announced last week but the update is not yet showing up on the beta directory listing. Cheers!

2.3 test client should be there, see https://help.nextcloud.com/t/help-testing-the-2-3-0-desktop-client-beta/8932

What type of support does NC have for contacts and Calendars?

We have CardDAV and CalDAV syncing and apps to handle contacts and calendars. So you can share calendars, invite people and all the basic stuff.

I was wondering when some integration for MAC os like the client will be become available? It seems the current client is coded against an old openSSL library? Same for firefox or safari browser integration on a MAC? It seems like some file preview functions are all giving issues that is not helping the adoption to MAC users? Those same functions like preview etc. seem to work fine on a windows client. but please keep up the good work in coding! the product is awesome in its functionality.

More work is happening in this area, the upcoming 2.3 client will have a newer openSSL for example. And more is coming 😄

      😉

Ach, it isn't a hurdle but there's a lot of interesting stuff in that area which provides similar challenges as the ones we try to solve (who is in control etcetera). The Nextcloud Box is positioned, especially by Canonical, to address some of that see https://insights.ubuntu.com/2017/02/22/an-ubuntu-snap-based-solution-for-enterprises-to-control-their-data/

I'm sure Frank is itching to move from this boring old cloud stuff and create a new project to tackle an entirely new space and challenge 8-)

Any plans for more of a Nexcloud "appliance" , say a NAS with Nexcloud integrated. Love the Raspberry Pi WD project but one still has to provide the Pi

On the software side, a couple of projects offer something like that. @alefattorini talked about one - Nethserver. And there is Univention's UCS which is a bit like that for SMB. And the Snaps from the Nextcloud Box can be put on any device/os that supports it (most linux'es).

With hardware - yeah, it would be nice to have a NAS with Nextcloud sold out of the box... We are talking to the guys doing the Omnia router, perhaps that'll come with Nextcloud some day 😉

And maybe somebody wants to start a business? We would be happy to help and if you need hard drives, let me know, I know some ppl at a big storage vendor 😛

@JaredBusch does MS Office not support WebDAV? If it does, this API exists already 😉

I assume that Office is using WebDAV for this. So write something that can make NextCloud show up in the dialog like this.

      0_1487776868805_upload-9f3fefe5-3a3f-46dc-9d34-ed9cbd9741a9

I honestly don't know what it takes to show up there - perhaps you can already do it, maybe it needs some work. Would be cool to see, agreed.

As you can see in the screenshot, when I clicked on the "One Drive - Personal" on the top right it opened a standard windows File dialog box but the address bar shows
      0_1487777917417_upload-a067559c-1ca8-425e-959b-f2f3b887d2b3

Clicking on it reveals the full URL in standard form: https://d.docs.live.net/c44d01487196d328

so can't you just enter webdav://mycloud.com/webdav/files/shareddocs/awesome/ there? (just making up a webdav URL here)...

That is what I do in my linux applications 😉

An alternative is to mount the webdav as a drive and just open files in the file open dialog, click on the virtual drive and open & save from there.

I am sorry, I have no windows experience 😉

Are noticeably slower speeds typical for external storage browsing on NextCloud?

That should normally not be the case, at least not for common external storages such as SMB. Can you elaborate a bit what kind of external storage you're using? Also we have support for SMB update notifications as described at https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/11/admin_manual/configuration_files/external_storage/smb.html

Configuring that may make a huge impact. Also make sure you're on the latest release.

I am specifically talking about Google Drive in this case.

that might have to do with your server having to go out to Google, getting its data and going back to you etcetera. This simply introduces more network delay. I believe we introduced some improvements for that recently, not sure if that was already in 11.

Right. I don't expect it to load as quickly, but some files and folders are taking a good 5 seconds to show up.

my understanding is that Google's API just limits us at some point, making it slower...

Any plans to make a version for windows server?

Does the existing version run on Windows? It's PHP and standard components.

Sorry if this is answered, Internet has been down for half an hour and I've been in the process of replying all this time.

Nextcloud doesn't run on Windows as much of what we do has to do with the filesystem and Windows has been a pita in that area. It used to require us to maintain an entirely separate filesystem abstraction just to have it not break all the time. If Windows ups its standard there, offering a full transparent, posix-compatible FS then I guess it will be easy... But we don't want to go the route of having all kinds of special cases anymore as that just results in exploding test cases and breakage.

Sure, but as our own @scottalanmiller likes to point out, those guys often have many times the security personal and need to keep things secure compared to other businesses, especially SMB (which is the bulk of this community). I'd argue that SMBs can't keep themselves more secure than Google can. Also as Scott has pointed out, even if there is a breach at Google, what are the chances they will get your data versus someone else's considering the shear volume of data they house?

I agree Google et all have better security engineering, as I said - but they also present a bigger target and once you're in, the amounts of data siphoned off are often substantial.

I'm not saying every small or medium business has to run their own Nextcloud instance - it does make sense for smaller companies to use a local, trusted provider with good security practices which follows the rules of their jurisdiction and all that. That would already be a huge improvement as it is hard to hack all of those at once, with their varying defenses and differences in infrastructure.

Can you expand upon what you mean by this?

Sure. You might remember the epic 'dick pics' episode from John Oliver & Edward Snowden: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEVlyP4_11M

This was quite awesome but at the same time - there really is an issue here. And most people have no idea. A lot of people clearly are storing their data at Google, Dropbox etcetera. Now that would be fine as long as that is data that can't be abused but that is often not the case. The terms of service of these companies doesn't protect you or your data and they are massive targets for hackers. Yes, they have good security people but nothing is ever perfectly secure and it is sooooo attractive to hack them...

And businesses are not too different - lots of them, even schools and universities and hospitals, store data on public clouds or at providers outside their country. And that can be abused in a whole bunch of ways, from government spying to corporate espionage to extortion of companies and individuals.

THAT scares me. Just look at the DNC scandal influencing politics in the USA. If you put your data at a public cloud, you're painting a massive target on it. If you have your own IT team taking care of it, as political organization, you can (emphasis on CAN, of course) do a much better job keeping it safe. And that can steer elections, politics, economics, everything.

That was the main motivation for Frank, back in the day, to announce a project to solve this and we at Nextcloud share this goal.

Are nextcloud downloads exceeding owncloud downloads yet?

we actually don't have solid numbers. Part of that is due to packages already in a few distributions, part because we don't track that stuff too closely... That was similar at ownCloud so it is very hard to compare, even if I had recent numbers.

What I can see is that the numbers we DO have grow nicely, with January being almost 10% more than December last year... But it fluctuates quite a bit.
