Theres a few errors/warnings: is there something specific I should look for?

The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \corp.DOMAIN.co.uk\sysvol\corp.DOMAIN.co.uk\Policies{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:
      a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
      b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).
      c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.

This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain CORP due to the following:
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.
This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator.

      ADDITIONAL INFO
If this computer is a domain controller for the specified domain, it sets up the secure session to the primary domain controller emulator in the specified domain. Otherwise, this computer sets up the secure session to any domain controller in the specified domain.

Weird one guys...I've just joined a computer to a new domain.
I can log in as the domain admin no problem however whenever I enter password for a user (any user), it says signing in...then welcome appears then it changes quickly to signing out!!! Anyone come across this before?

Note: I can sign in fine on other computers.
      It's a Windows 10 PC

Would you suggest 1st step I install Hyper V on the new 2012 server, then backup the data on the SBS. Then create a VM on the 2012 and promote that as a DC?

      • Install Hyper-V
      • Create two VMs (one for AD, one for FS)
      • Join AD to the Domain
      • Remove AD on the old instance with only SBS and this new AD VM remaining
      • Migrate all file shares to the new FS VM
      • Turn off everything but AD on the SBS machine
      • Promote the 2012 R2 AD VM to forest root
      • Have bonfire and roast marshmallows around the burning remains of the SBS box

I actually LOL'd at the last comment

That leaves me to ask - How do I remove AD on the old SBS? I cant recall!!! (point 4 above)
When I promote the 2012 to Forest root, will that migrate the AD info?

I'd like the SBS to be toast - it's about to die on them anyway. Right now it is the primary DC with AD running on it with file shares.

If I promote as a DC what happens to the 2003 as that point - you say I have a few days but whats the technicals behind what happens when you promote another new DC on the network?

No. I'm def in favor of having the DC visualized though.

    • Active Directory Migration

I've just left a new potential client...Their setup consists of 10 users with 1 old SBS 2003 server (domain controller) which is creaking and about to die on them.

Whoever was looking after their network previously talked them into buying a new server (Server2012R2) which they agreed and was installed prior to him walking away!!

However, the problem is, rather than migrating the AD from the old server to the new or even start fresh, he simply joined the new server to the original domain and moved their data across from the old to the new.

What I'd like to do if I get the gig is promote the new server to be the primary domain controller and then migrate the AD information across and then shut down the old server. Is there any easy way of promoting the new server to a primary DC and migrate the AD without loosing any data?

I've never migrated AD across before - i usually start fresh so thoughts welcomed.
      Thanks

Yup was looking at this option. I think the HP ProDesk 400 G1 Mini Desktop will do the trick.

An Intel Stick with Window 10 free could do this for you - though you'd have to test it to see if there would be enough processing power to make you happy.

Havent heard good things on these Intel sticks! Would rather get the Chromebox...Skype works on the TV so perhaps I can suggest using TV for Skype and Chrombox for hangouts and bluejeans

We dont officially support them but charge for the time they bother us! They didnt want a full service with us. If they did they wouldnt have been in this mess in the first instance and they certainly wouldnt be allowed to unplug or touch servers/hardware without our say so!!!!

But you are correct! The dangerous people are those who THINK they know how things work and go gung-ho with the troubleshooting!
They have been charged accordingly for our time

    • Conference PC Setup - Samsung TV + Hangouts

Scenario: Client does a lot of conference calls. Typically uses Google Hangouts (90% of time) and Skype (10%).

They've just created a lovely conference room and purchased a huge Samsung Smart TV...They now decided they want to use that TV for video conferencing...The Samsung TV doesn't work with Google Hangouts (no app or compatible) so is problem for them but can use it for Skype.

I have suggested they connect a laptop (MAC's) into the TV via HDMI and mirror the screen or use Chromecast - which they have done and works, however the webcam and mic is on the laptop so they still have to crowd around the laptop to be in webcam shot.

The Samsung TV's does have webcam but will only work with Skype so not good for them.

Therefore the next solution is to get a dedicated conference computer which can sit behind the TV permanently connected (with a USB webcam to sit on top of TV) and then get some speakers and a wireless microphone to sit on the desk.... Does anyone have any recommendations for audio solutions or conference PC's (windows is fine) we can use for this scenario?

      Thanks

UPDATE: So original NAS was plugged back in as it was - but we cant access it or browse to it (although you can ping it via IP but not hostname). They've rebooted it as well (despite me saying not to!!!!)

There is a flashing blue light on the power button - Assume that's initiating some kind of repair? - I'll leave it for a while and see what happens with it

Any modern Linux system can read the disks from a ReadyNAS. You will need to install something like Mint or Fedora on a desktop and attach it to that and go from there.

Are these free? I assume I can download software which will then allow me to mount the drive (assuming its readable)?
