That makes a little more sense. They've negotiated a deal with Microsoft from the sounds of it.

No, way, way more likely they just figured out how hard it is to get caught.

I totally doubt anything like that is going on here. I have been told our annual budget for licensing which we pay is in the region of ยฃ600,000. Either way, not my problem ๐Ÿ™‚

Wow. But, sounds like only that high because they don't know what they are using, lol. The only way to get licensing truly down is to know what you use. Someone is both ignoring what is used, but also encouraging unlimited use. Both things set MS up to just keep making it more and more expensive. It's a trick, sounds easy, but makes one lazy licensing person encourage not keeping licensing lean - basically giving Microsoft the power to charge anything that they want down the road.

Yeah, not your problem, but definitely a symptom of management issues and a lack of clear thinking. If they are truly paying their bills, my guess is a licensing "specialist" who has created their own job and knows if MS isn't used heavily, their job would go away, so is doing stuff to encourage you to lock in MS so that that specialist can't be eliminated. Basically creating their own job.

Yeah, I don't disagree with anything you said. It's just not my issue. I still get to buy shiny new toys ๐Ÿ™‚

Im guessing 'U' is fine. As I want vLAN2 to pass traffic where the device has already set vlan2 in its NIC. If the LAG is set to 'T', all traffic will be set to vlan2, right? Even when from vLan1/default...

I think it's better to tag every vlan in both ends. Then you can be certain traffic ends up on the same vlan on the other switch stack.

Can one fibere cable route our Internet traffic to them, whilst also passing 'private' traffic over this line too?

That's the norm. And not just for ISPs, VPNs do this, too.

The gateway out is public IP to the Internet. VPN tunnels between two public IPs, etc... all Internet.

What they seem to be saying is that the 89.x.x.x public 'Internet Stuff' can go through that cable, and my 192.168.3.x 'LAN' stuff can also go through that cable, and at the same time I can have Internet served to my Firewall, and 'LAN' to my device... can it work that way?

So their switch interface 2 is routing 89.x.x.x traffic, and interface 3 is is extending my LAN on 192.x.x.x (public IPs going on and private)... all through the fibre cable to their DC?

      More or less - yes.
They can trunk the single line to act like many lines - think VLANs

Ok. I think that makes more sense to me.

So, the ISP switch eth1 is vLAN1, which passes 89.x.x.x to my firewall for my organisations Internet access. eth1 routes out over their eth0 fibre link. Then, vLAN2 is eth2 on their switch, which extends my 192.x.x.x private range to them, again over the eth0.

Ok, I think in that warped way I get it.

So, I can say to them:

"I'm going to plug my device 10.10.10.2 in to your switch at my office on eth3.
Connect my box at your DC. Its set to be 10.10.10.3. Now, make them talk over my fibre line..."

This assumes it's a straight extension of your network - and not a routed new network.

As with many things in Linux... the simple answer makes sense. Windows introduces all kinds of risk and complexity to keep you from simply copying a VM. Linux just keeps it simple.

Did you manage to get in? I've been on the waiting list for months and even paid to be moved up, and they've not opened to me yet.

Not yet, but if this guy is just getting ready it could be a valid option.

Also, you have not been waiting months. The service has not been available that long.

I've been waiting months since they announced it. It is, AFAIK, not available at all yet.

Announced on Sept 27, so, you win. Months (plural) barely. 73 days, 2.5 months.

I just looked. The only place to add comments with Alertmanager are when an alert is silenced. I looked in Grafana as well and that might be of use. Grafana will let you set alerts on specific metrics and then you can set annotations on those alerts. Here's a sample graph with alerts (they're the red dotted line).

      0_1532217196124_alerts.png

You can click on the alert and give an annotation.

      0_1532217291469_annotation.png

Then when you hover over the alert you can see the annotations and tags.

Thanks Scott. I expect that we would see no issues, just want to be comfortable about it before giving the go ahead. Generally, do you just provide new supplier with the agreement ID of the existing subscription and they then sort the rest after payment?

I agree that "Head of" sounds like you are describing something rather than a title. It's not wrong, it's just more conversational that titular.

I've pushed back with 'IT & Customer Service Delivery Manager'. Lets see if they are happy with that. Though, I expect too be told 'must include Head of...' bah!

I am interested in Docker, on Windows Server 2016.

Obvious question is... why? I don't mean that to sound like Docker is bad, but Docker is really not meant for IT, but rather for developers. You can use it in IT, but given that the obvious use cases aren't real strong, this doesn't give us a good guess as to what about it is interesting you and what you are looking to learn about it.

Its because its a cool technology which I am interested in. Do you know of any docker specific forums? Perhaps this will be more useful in that space...

I do keep typing 'dicker' rather than 'docker'. Its amusing.

I think your biggest challenge will be just how new Docker is on Windows. I tend to type docket instead of Docker. We talked about Docker at MangoCon 2017 ๐Ÿ™‚

      What particular area was discussed?

Very general, but looking at how Docker and LXC differed in technology and intent.

Yep, cant say i've heard of LXC.

LOL, LXC is the big container leader. Docker is just tacked onto it. Docker is LXC under the hood.

Not anymore. They dropped LXC around 2 years ago. They wrote their own library in Go called libcontainer.

Had to to be able to port to Windows.

Being able to charge for this means I can build the team faster to improve support. As we get more customers, the number of personnel will need to increase offering support... at cost. Currently, this is met with no charge to customers at all, and were just about able to make the finances work. However, It needs to be monetized to make it sustainable...

Do you think such a way is sensible?

      Edited: to explain a little.

It is extremely hard to do in practice. If you really want to do this, the only way that I have seen it work is to offer phone support at one tier, email at another, etc.

Hard, nothing wrong with that. Worthwhile - yes. Worth being hard, yes. If were able to monetize some of the support, that will help financially - a lot actually.

But just to be clear... I mean hard in the "never seen it work, ever" sense. Support and SLAs are very tough things to put together. I can't even picture how it's possible to make it work.

Then, how do other companies stop support services for customers from burning through cash?

Single SLO / SLA level, not tiers that depend on intentionally lowering quality to lower tiers. Have you seen any support company with a model like this? This works for shipping and stuff with hardware, because you use cheaper shipping options to make the tiers. But for support, you can only make this work by ignoring customers to make them "suffer" for not paying for the better service.

A few, such as Bonitasoft, a BPM solution. They offer such a setup. I don't see a single SLO/SLA working - for our typical customer, the free tier will work. Say 70%. For the other 30% or so, I could picture a premium service, if offered, being accepted. If the only option was that service, paid, we would lose 70% of business.

How would the premium work? And don't say SLA, how will the helpdesk behave to make it work?

I could see the phone option like discussed working. For example, if free, you email and that goes in to something like Helpscout, and well respond as and when we can. Typically within a day (although, that information could be internal only). If paid, you get email/Helpscout, but also a phone number to get straight through to us, and a support desk member you've been assigned as a main point of contact, perhaps quarterly reviews to see how we can further help them etc...

That stuff I see work because you are given them solid options that don't require taking something away from other tiers to make it make sense.
