    • RE: Answering Some Questions

      I'm a hybrid maybe????

Started college, hated it. Got a job interning with NASA (no helpdesk) IT Security(title only). Moved to a 2 man in house medical facility with 800 or so users. did helpdesk, server admin, form printing, ms office help, etc. we did everything, then jumped into SMB consulting with a big MSP, and decided I wanted to be self employed......here we are now. so yeah, no help desk, little bit of college. and I'm happy with my pay 🙂

    • RE: 1001 Reasons Not to Be an MSP

I've never really had a problem collecting from clients. I run on net 30, and my first meeting with a client (well the meeting where they choose me as their ITSP we go over mutual expectations. communication, payments, etc.

Any of you have any HylaFax installs out there independent of freepbx or elastix? Gonna be playing with this for a client and wanted to get a little insider info before diving in.

    • From 1 man show to more.

Have any of you here started as a one man shop and grown to more? Have any of you been a part of the initial startup crew of a MSP/ITSP/WhateverSP. If so, what advice would you have for a proven one man shop that is having a tough time figuring out how to get over that first hurdle of becoming more than just a 1 man show.

      Hey, Thanks!

    • RE: Virtualization Redemption?

OK, sorry i posted and vanished. My current single caveat to doing anything right now is storage space. I know SQL and AD will replicate without issue. I also know that they say that their applications data will do the same using robocopy nightly. Would it be stupid for me to overcome the current storage shortage of running all 4 vms on 1 host by switching from raid 10 to raid 6 on the DR server?

Datacenter is connected over vpls and we have a 30x30 pipe between us and DC.

I like the idea of xen just because of all of the built in goodies that aren't included with ESXi, like HA.

I think I have two slots on each server that I could put drives in to expand storage even more. alteast on the DR server.

    • Sharepoint Pros?

I've got a client who is in the construction business. They are growing quick, have zero IT backbone, and dont want to jump into a construction management software package until we do some trials, testing, etc. In the mean time I thought they could benefit from Sharepoint for document management. Currently they are using dropbox......

I'm migrating them to O365 today, and their plan includes sharepoint. I've never really used it before, anybody want to school me on the basics?

    • RE: Starting own IT consultancy - Gathering list of tools required and recommendations

I run my biz off of freshbooks and MaxFocus (formerly GFI Max) and I love it. one stop shop for AV, Monitoring, Patching, Remote Support, etc. I dig. They even have a Service Desk add in (that i dont use) that you can use for ticketing, and project management I think.

    • RE: Client system overhaul

Since you're stuck with 08, i'd use XenServer. it's all open source now, and purdy nice. I dont have much experience with it but 2 of my home servers are running it. purdy neat. way more robust than the free version of esxi.

It looks nice but until you know an environment you can't give a fair estimate. you need to be cautious though, asking some questions is fine, we all ask lots of questions, but it seems you dont have any sort of plan for what you're trying to do.

    • Weird laptop problem

HP Pro Book 4545s is the culprit. Battery would not charge, ordered new battery. with new battery, I get the plugged in, not charging message. I've updated bios, deleted the ACHI devices under device manager, made sure all drivers were up to date...still no go.

here's the weird part, when the battery is plugged in (new or old) the fan never kicks off, and the cpu consumption goes to 100. anybody experienced this before?
