@JaredBusch I see what you mean. I initially wasn't even planning on having a secondary VM at all. At the last minute I figured in a pinch it could be helpful if for some reason I had to reboot the primary VM during business hours and users were trying to access their cloud services. And if I was going to have DNS on a secondary server I can't think of a reason to not do DC, because then you get the AD integration, and DNS can read/write instead of just read.

@MattSpeller That's a good point. It's always worth giving it a second shot.

Office 365 not archiving
Hi guys,
I have a client who goes through a lot of email. They are in the insurance industry. This year one user went through more than 50 GB. Thank god for unlimited archive.
Anyways, her mailbox (E3 license)is full and can't send email. I updated her retention policy from default 1 year move to archive to default 6 month move to archive, but it's not applying. From running some power shell commands I can see her account is indeed using the new retention policy, but when I tell it to show me her current retention tags it's till showing default 1 year move to archive.
I've read in a few places it can take 24 hours for changes to propagate, while others have said a week. I ran the command that kick starts the Managed Folder Assistant for her account, but no change.
Should I try to manually archive and just give it time to see if the policy eventually applies? I originally made the retention change at about 7 PM on Friday night.

RE: Office 365 not archiving
@scottalanmiller Storagecraft keeps sending me notices on how their offering backup for Office 365. I never really thought it was warranted, but your example makes me think I should reconsider.

RE: Office 365 not archiving
Finally Microsoft is aware of the issue.
We're having issues,
I hate not being able to control things like this. It's so hard to tell a customer, "ehhh...we're just going to have to give it more time..."

One Server -2 NICs, Different IPs
Hi Guys,
I just picked up a new SMB customer. He has a 2012R2 server and apparently it's been configured to use both NICs with different IPs. I found this article here:
And it discusses a use case for this but I was troubled by this:
"It's important to note that applications other the file server and file client might not behave properly with this configuration (they might not listen on all interfaces, for instance). You might also run into issues updating routing tables, especially in the case of a failure of a NIC or removal of a cable. These issues are documented in KB article 175767. For these reasons, many will not recommend this specific setup with a single subnet."
My first thought is to go and disable the secondary NIC, but can you guys think of any use cases I'm unaware of that might discourage me from disabling? From what I can gather his server is handling DNS, but not DHCP (I'm planning to change that). It's also a file server/SQL server. I just don't see the necessity of having that secondary NIC other than possibly creating issues.

Black Screen w/ white cursor after login on one user profile
Hey guys,
So I got a call today from one of my customers saying he was having issues with his computer. He reported that it was acting sluggishly, so he rebooted. After rebooting he only got the black screen w/white cursor. Ctrl, Alt, Delete does function, but if you try to go to task manager you get the spinning circle and then nothing happens.
Since this customer is running Webroot I went back and checked the logs, and apparently his computer did quarantine some items on April 24th. I submitted a ticket to Webroot which they then provided me with a tool to fix quarantined items. Unfortunately the executable they gave me didn't seem to make a difference.
I'm able to login on another user profile just fine so now I'm wondering if somehow it's just a corrupt user profile even though it's not showing the typical symptoms of that?

Domain name not required for authentication?
Hi guys,
I just setup a Windows 2016 server as DC & File server to do a demo for a customer. In the process I was setting up a few shares and noticed that from Windows or Mac I was able to authenticate with the server with just a username instead of DOMAIN\username. If said server is running as DC, shouldn't the domain name be required for authentication?

Searching multiple keywords in Outlook using advanced find/query builder - results aren't what they should be
Hi guys,
I have a customer that's wanting to search a mailbox/online archive for multiple keywords (about 10). I'm noticing some strange results. Say the keywords are cat, dog, mouse, and cheetah. Using the OR operator and searching for cat OR dog OR cheetah will turn up less results than just searching for just cheetah or dog. It's almost as though it thinks I'm using AND instead of OR. Is there a limitation on how many keywords you can search for? As of right now my plan is to do separate searches for each keyword. The problem is that will lead to duplicate results, but since this for a legal matter I figure more is always better for less. Anybody ever run into this issue?

a2 hosting - looks like a potential ransomware attack
Anybody else have any sites hosted there? One of my clients have a site there and it's been down for a few days - trying to procure some sort of offsite backup to re-upload somewhere else. I suspected some sort of ransomware attack when I came across this article:
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/04/26/a2_hosting_outage/
At least one person in the comments mentions that he saw all of his files renamed with a *.lock extension via FTP.

RE: Verzon One Talk - Yeallink T41s no dialtone on handset (works on speakerphone)
I wasn't too thrilled when they picked this option as Verizon is new to VOIP and their software isn't very mature. Haven't heard of voIP.ms but it's not super confidence inspiring when their feature page is rendering weird in chrome...

Outlook failing to open from multiple customers...
I've had multiple calls coming in with customers where Outlook isn't opening. Anybody have any idea what's causing this? Doesn't seem to be related to an update that got installed on any of the machines. On Twitter it seems LOTS of people are running into the same issue.

Create blank/unsaved documents in OneDrive
Hi guys,
Is there a way with OneDrive/Word that once you create a word document it automatically saves to OneDrive with a name of "document1" so that the "auto save" feature is turned on and already working? A great example is how Google Docs works - I create
a new "untitled" document and before I "save" or give it an official name it's already saving changes to the cloud in real time.I have a customer that starts work on multiple world files without remembering to save. He has a tendency to then lose said documents when his computer does windows updates/crashes/etc. I've convinced him that he can't trust the Auto Recovery system. I thought there was a way with One Drive that the file gets created by default in OneDrive so it's automatically saving as you go, even if it's saving as "document1," but I can't seem to make this work. One option is to right click in the OneDrive folder, select new word document, not rename (use default which is "New Microsoft Word Document") and then open it...but that's kind of a weird work flow.
