I consider those things really a personal preference.

I'm not sure what makes a lower resolution display more compatibility with standard Linux GUI it's just a resolution. I suppose you could mean - it has the same scaling problem that Microsoft Windows has with high resolution screens (they are a bit better, but really only a bit).

You've nailed it with the list of differences, you have to decide for yourself what is important, that's not something can decide for you.

@dafyre said in SMB - Greenfield scenario - Full cloud sync and backup:

@BRRABill His point still remains in that you are covered if a rock falls on the building, but not if a fire burns down the entire city.

Is it often that a fire burns down an entire city?

I mean what are the risk chances of
      a) a loss of the NAS (theft, building fire, building flood)
      b) a whoel city burning down

The problem is they WILL forget to bring usb home, or throw the drive and ignore errors… really, what's wrong with a cloud backup in this scenario? Apart from the first upload, the changed data ratio will be very low, something like <100Mb/day.

If you're looking at a low daily change rage, then I'd definitely go with NextCloud + Backblaze.

@travisdh1 Oh, download also, we are on a 4Mbit/s symmetric HDSL link šŸ˜• .

I'd give my left leg for a 4mbit symmetric. Our two locations have 10mbit/1mbit and 768k/356k respectively.

Wow, so I think anything cloud-based is ruled out for you… HDSL is not cheap, we are planning for a dedicated 10/10 FTTH link, abou the same price.

Ruled out by available internet connection and owners, yep.

To do Group Policy with Azure AD you either need to add InTune to AAD or else you need a third party solution. I think you can do this with PowerShell scripts, but I've never tried to replicate GP in that way on Windows. It's how we would do it on Linux, though. Something like Ansible should work, too.

A vendor submit us a "fat" solution based on this hardware and controlled by Polyedro software (from TeamSystem, I don't know if it exist outside Italy), but I think that this is just over-engineering… for 7k€!

@Francesco-Provino said in WAN connection design: big pipe VS ADSL or… embrace the cloud:

@scottalanmiller I agree. I'm curious, why do you think that the connectivity in Italy is going backwards? And what about ADSL vs pricey FTTH?

Because studies show it going backwards šŸ™‚ Broadband availability and adoption rates are heavily monitored by business and governments and Italy is. The biggest news in the world around that because it is the only European country moving away from Internet adoption - negative growth rates. It's real metrics from the ISPs, not an opinion.

So, you already use LUKS… where do you store it, locally or on in a cloud-something? I'm very curious about that, I believe LUKS is not so widespread, but very good at solving problems like password storage.

I used it extensively and automated it's creation for a huge hedge fund. Used for global finance data. Both local and cloud.

For databases, not little files šŸ™‚

And if you look, that EXT3 type is on LVM. Hence the weird confusion šŸ™‚

Yeah that, as I said, is what got me.

So, if you pick EXT is enables thin provisioning by default?
Yes. Because thin provisioning is not actually the option. It's actually just raw LVM vs file based. Files are thin provisioned. LVM raw is not. File based is being called ext3 here.

I was thinking that because the XS installer is based on the CentOS one, it would also carry a GUI-less installation method.

That would make sense, but it is heavily modified. It might do a text mode install, but I'm guessing not.

So I haven't done this with XS7 as of yet.

The guide I followed on XS6.5 can be found here, everything is performed through the console.

Xen Orchestra has a guide that just uses the web console to create a local ISO SR.

You mean because of the lack of empty caddies? Sure I understand that, but I addressed that in my post.

oh, meaning rip the caddies off. I didn't understand what you were implying. That makes more sense.

Exactly. I've considered doing the same for my HP server.
